Welcome to MSN TV!
By now, you’ve connected your Internet player and created your MSN TV account; you’re probably eager to start exploring.
If you haven’t set up your Internet player, use the instructions in the Setup Guide to get everything connected. Come back here when you’re done.
In this guide, you’ll explore the basics of using the MSN TV service.

Your MSN TV home page
No matter where you go on MSN TV or on the Internet, if you want to get back to the home page, just press Home on your keyboard or remote control.
After you sign in to MSN TV, you see the home page. The home page is like downtown MSN TV: from there, you can get just about anywhere. Take a few minutes to get acquainted with your home page. There’s a lot to explore!
In the center of the home page, you’ll see the latest news and weather, as well as tips to help you make the most of your MSN TV experience. You can also search the Web from there by typing words or a Web address into the search box.
Toward the bottom of the home page, you’ll see links to
Mail, Favorites, Messenger, Photos, Chat, and more. Use the left and right arrows on your keyboard or remote to see more links.
At the top of the home page are some important tools to help you learn more about MSN TV. Let’s first take a look at Using MSN TV.

For example, if you’re in Mail and choose Help, you’ll get help about Mail. If you’re in Chat and choose Help, you’ll get help about Chat.

The parts of an e-mail address
Here are some example e-mail addresses:
An e-mail address, just like a street address, has a few different parts that always appear in the same order. [email protected]
This is the online or e-mail name of the person
The “at” symbol (@) connects these two parts.
This part is called the domain. It may be the name of the e-mail service that they use or it may be the name of the company they work for.
Reading e-mail
Your Inbox is the starting point for everything you do in Mail, from reading and writing an e-mail to controlling unwanted e-mail, or spam.
E-mail messages are delivered to your Inbox. When you have unread e-mail, the blue light on the front of your
Internet player will illuminate, and the status bar at the bottom or your screen will show how many unread messages you have.
To read your e-mail

Go to Mail by pressing the Mail key on the keyboard or by choosing Mail on the home page.
Your Inbox opens.

Choose the e-mail message that you want to read.
The e-mail will open in a new page. You don’t have to read the entire message right away. It will stay in your Inbox until you delete it or move it to a folder.

To read the next e-mail in your Inbox, choose Next at the top of the page. To read the previous e-mail, choose Previous.

Writing e-mail
Writing an e-mail is as easy as writing a letter. Your messages just get there a lot faster.
You can write e-mail to anyone who has an e-mail address, whether they’re across town or around the world.
To write an e-mail message
1
Go to Mail by pressing the Mail key on the keyboard or by choosing Mail on the home page.

Choose Write e-mail from anywhere in Mail.
The Write e-mail page appears.

Type an e-mail address in the To line.
If you want to send a copy of your e-mail to someone else at the same time, you can type their address on the Cc line (Cc stands for carbon copy).

Type the subject of your e-mail on the Subject line.

If you want to save a copy of the e-mail that you’re sending, check Save a copy of this e-mail
to my Sent messages folder.

Type your message. When you’re finished, choose Send.
Saving and organizing your e-mail
On MSN TV, you can save e-mail messages you want to keep, and you can create folders to help you organize your saved e-mail.
For example, you might want to create a folder to store e-mail from your family, another to store e-mail from your friends, and another to store e-mail from companies.
To do this, first you create a folder, and then you move e-mail to that folder. You can move e-mail as you read it from the Read e-mail page or move e-mail directly from the Inbox.
To create a folder

Press the Mail key on your keyboard.

Choose Folders, and then choose Add a Folder.

Type the name of the folder that you want to create.

Choose Add.
To save an e-mail message you’re reading

Choose Move to Folder.

Choose the folder that you want to move the e-mail message to. You can also create a new folder.

Opening and viewing e-mail attachments
Your friends may send documents and photos along with their e-mails.
These are known as attachments.
When you get an e-mail with a document or photo attached to it, you see a paper clip next to the e-mail in your Inbox.
To open and view a document you receive in e-mail

Choose the e-mail with the document to open it.

Choose the attachment.
The document opens in a new page. To magnify something in the attachment, choose Zoom in.
To zoom out, choose Zoom out.

Choose Done when you’re ready to go back to the e-mail message.
To open and view photos you receive in e-mail
1
Choose the e-mail with the photos to open it.
The e-mail opens in a new page. Below the date, you see information about the pictures that are attached.

Choose this information to open the photos.
Photos viewer opens. Here, you can print, view a slideshow, or see photo thumbnails.

Choose Done when you’re ready to go back to the e-mail message.
Using the Address book
You don’t have to remember the e-mail addresses of the people you write to. You can just save their addresses in your Address book.
There are various ways to do this. You can add an address when you read an e-mail, or your can add an address directly to the Address book.
To add an e-mail address from an e-mail you receive

Open an e-mail message sent from the e-mail address you want to add.

Choose Save Address on the Read a message page.
To add an e-mail address directly to the Address book
1
Go to Mail by pressing the Mail key on the keyboard or by choosing Mail on the home page.

Choose Address book, and then choose Add a Contact.

On the Save address page, type a Quickname for the person that you’re adding. This can be a nickname, for example.

Type the first and last name of the person that you're adding.

Type the e-mail address of the person that you’re adding.

Choose Add.
Tip
After you add someone to your Address book, you can type their Quickname – rather than their full e-mail address – in the To line of an e-mail you write.

Dealing with junk mail
You probably already get junk mail letters delivered by the post office.
Now that you’re on the Internet, you may also get junk e-mail, often called spam.
The people who send these unwanted messages are called spammers. Some unscrupulous companies may share e-mail addresses with spammers, or a spammer may send thousands of e-mails to e-mail addresses at random, hoping that some of them will reach valid accounts.
You can set up a junk mail filter to help reduce the amount of junk mail you see in your Inbox. You can also decide how quickly junk mail is deleted from the
Junk mail folder, which MSN TV automatically creates when you set up an account.
There are other ways to handle junk mail. If everything you get from a particular person is junk mail, you can block all mail from their address. Of course, you can always simply delete unwanted mail.
To set up a Junk mail filter
1
Go to Mail by pressing the Mail key on the keyboard or by choosing Mail on the home page.

Choose Settings.

Choose Junk mail filter.

Choose the level of protection you want, and then choose Save Changes.
To choose how quickly junk mail is deleted

To block an e-mail address

Imagine a library bigger than any building can hold, a world-wide shopping mall open 24 hours a day, a global newsroom, and an international town square where anyone can make their views known.
Combine these things and more and you have the World Wide Web.
You can browse and explore the Web on your own or you can use Search to find what you want. It’s up to you.
The Web is made of millions of Web sites. Each site, like a book, can have hundreds of Web pages.
What makes the Web so much fun is the way that many of these pages are linked together. These links take you to different pages. Most of the time, links appear as underlined or differently colored text that you can choose.
Often, links appear as buttons on a Web page. You can easily spend hours browsing linked pages. This is also known as surfing the Web.
In this section, you’ll learn about browsing and searching the Web. To get more information on browsing or searching, choose Help on the home page.
Going to a Web site you know
Many organizations now put their
Web address in their ads or on business cards. If you know the
Web address of a site that you want to visit, you can easily get to it.
There are three ways to go to a Web site you know
• On the MSN TV home page, type the Web site address in the text box near the bottom of the page.
• In Search, type the Web site address into the text box on the Search page.
• When you’re anywhere on MSN TV, press the
Type www key on the keyboard, and then type the Web site address in the text box that appears.
This is usually the handiest way.
For example, here’s a Web address. Press the Type www key on your keyboard, type the address in the text box that appears, and then choose Go. http://www.ancestry.com
Tip
When using Type www, you only have to type the part of the address that comes after www. MSN TV will take care of the rest.

Finding information with Search
There are millions of Web pages. To find exactly what you want, you have to be specific. You do the same thing when you call Directory Assistance for a phone number.
If you called Directory Assistance and asked for Joe’s phone number, they’d ask you for more information in order to narrow it down. You’d need Joe’s last name, and at least the city where he lived. The more information you had, the better they’d be able to help you. Searching the Web works much the same way.
There are four ways to search on MSN TV
• On the MSN TV home page, type the words or phrase you want to search for in the text box near the bottom of the page.
• In Search, type the words or phrase you want to search for in the text box there.
• On the search results page, type the words or phrase you want to search for in the text box at the bottom of the page.
• When you’re anywhere on MSN TV, press the
Search key on the keyboard. This will take you to the Search page.
Narrowing down a search
If your search gets too many results, use more keywords to help narrow it down.
Try this search yourself: look for information about the first crew to land a spacecraft on the moon. In this exercise, you’ll learn how to narrow down a search.
1
Type moon in the Search box on the home page, and then choose Go.
You’ll get lots of listings on the results page. Since moon is a fairly common word, it’s found on thousands of
Web pages. You’ll see descriptions of some of these pages on the results page.
2
To narrow down your search, add some more information.
Since you know you want to find information on the crew that went to the moon, type crew and moon in the text box. You can type this in the box at the bottom of the results page. You’ll still get many listings on the results page.

Make your search even more specific. Type NASA and crew and moon in the text box.
This time, you get more relevant results.

If you scroll down the results page, you should be able to find information about the Apollo team. To go to a particular Web page, choose it from the list.

Searching for a phrase or name
Often, you may want to look up a phrase or a complete name. To make sure Search looks for the exact phrase or the exact name, put quotes around it.
“New York State”
”stepping stones”
“interest rates”
When you put a phrase or a complete name in quotes, you tell Search to look only for results that have those exact words in that order, and not results that are close to it, or that have only a few of the same words, or have the words in a different order.
Here are some other searches you might want to try
• Look up the name of your high school to see if you can find information on your former schoolmates or to find out how the school has changed since you were a student there. (You may need to include both the name of the school and the city.)
• Try to find a few different recipes for your favorite dish or dessert.
• Search for the town or city you currently live in to see if you can find information on its history.
Favorites

Favorites
When you find a Web page you like and know you’ll want to return to, you can save it as a favorite so you can get back to it quickly, without having to search or browse for it again.
For example, you might want to save as favorites the
Web sites for your local library, a nearby national park, or even a resort you dream of visiting.
You can then access your favorite sites by choosing
Favorites from the bottom of the home page, or by using the Favorites keys on your keyboard.
You can also set up shortcuts to three of your favorite
Web sites so you can return to them simply by pressing a key on your keyboard.
In this section, you’ll learn how to save and organize favorites.
To learn more about saving Web pages as favorites, or other ways you can organize your favorites, choose Help from any page in Favorites.
Saving favorite Web sites
Saving a Web page as a favorite is easy.
You’ll probably find that you visit some sites regularly.
You may want to keep current on news from your home town, or you might want to check the weather on the golf course every morning.
To save a Web page as a favorite
1
Go to the Web site you want to save as a favorite.

Press Save Fav on your keyboard
3
On the panel that appears, choose Save.
You see a confirmation that the favorite has been saved.
To see your list of favorites at any time, press Favs on the keyboard.

Organizing your favorites
After you’ve used the Web for awhile, you may find that you have several favorites. You can create folders to organize your favorites.
You can create folders with any theme or subject you choose. For example, you can create a folder devoted to your favorite online stores so you can quickly do comparison shopping.
To create a favorites folder
1
Go to Favorites by pressing the Favs key on the keyboard or by choosing Favorites on the home page.

Choose Organize.

Choose Add a folder.
4
Type a name for the folder, and then choose Add.
The new folder is added and the main Favorites page appears. Now that you have a new folder, you can move your favorites to it.
To move your favorites
1
On the Favorites page, choose Organize.

On the Organize page, choose Move favorites.
A page showing your favorites appears.

Check the boxes next to the favorites that you want to move.

Choose Choose a Folder.
5
Choose the folder you want to move the favorites to.

Choose Continue.
Your favorites are moved.
Creating shortcuts to your favorites
If you create a shortcut to a Web page, you can get there by pressing just one key on your keyboard.
Setting up a favorites shortcut is similar to assigning a favorite radio station to one of the buttons on your car radio.
To create a shortcut to a Web site

Go to the Web site you want.
2
Press one of the Fav # keys on the keyboard.
The Set Shortcut page appears.

Choose Set Shortcut.
You see a confirmation that you’ve successfully set up the shortcut. Shortcuts that aren’t already in your favorites list are automatically added to it.
To change a shortcut

Press and hold down the Fav # key that you want to change. A notice appears asking you if you want to change it.

Passing a note to a friend is perfectly
OK on
MSN TV.
With
MSN
Messenger, you can send real-time, instant messages to your online contacts.
They can send instant messages back to you, too. Instant messaging is quicker than an e-mail — you can see your contact’s response on your screen as soon as they type it— and it’s more personal than a conversation in a chat room full of people.
This section shows you how to make someone a Messenger contact, reply to someone who wants to make you a contact, and exchange instant messages.
If you want more information, choose Help from anywhere in Messenger.
Exchanging instant messages
Before you begin exchanging instant messages with someone, you need to make that person a contact.
You can add as a contact anyone who uses MSN Messenger and who has an e-mail address that ends in hotmail.com, msn.com, webtv.net, or passport.com, or anyone who has a .NET Passport.
To make someone a contact
1
Go to Messenger by pressing the Msgr key on the keyboard or by choosing Messenger on the home page.
2
On the Contact list page, choose Add a Contact.
3
Type the e-mail address of the person you want to add as a contact, and then choose Add.
You see a confirmation; the person is sent a contact request.
To reply to someone who wants to make you a contact
1
Go to Messenger by pressing the Msgr key on the keyboard or by choosing Messenger on the home page.
You see the contact request.

On the contact request page, choose whether you want to allow the person to see when you’re online and to send you instant messages.

Choose whether to add the person to your contact list so that you can see when they’re online and can send them instant messages.

Choose Done.

Starting instant message conversations
Don’t be shy. Start a conversation!
You can have a conversation with any contact who is currently online.
You can talk to one person or carry on several conversations at the same time on MSN TV. You can continue a conversation you’re already having while you start a new one.
To start a conversation
1
From anywhere in Messenger, choose Contact List.
2
Choose an online contact. Online contacts appear in your contact list with this green symbol.

The conversation page opens.
Type your message in the box at the bottom of the page, and then choose Send or press OK on your keyboard.
Your message will appear in the conversation box at the center of the page. Any messages your contact sends will also appear here.
You can type as many messages as you want.

When you’re done with your conversation, choose End Conversation.
Tip
You can add graphics, also known as emoticons, to your messages. Choose the smiling face to see the emoticons that are available and to select the one you want to use.
To start another conversation

Choose Contact List.

Choose the online contact you want to have a conversation with.

The conversation panel will open. On the left side of the panel, you will see the name of the contact you just chose, as well as the name of the contact you are already having a conversation with.

To switch between conversations, choose the name of the person you want to talk to.
You can do other things on MSN TV, such as surf the Web or read an e-mail message, while you have a conversation with Messenger. When someone sends you an instant message, you’ll see an alert at the bottom of your screen.
To return to your conversation at any time, press the
Msgr key on your keyboard.

Blocking people in Messenger
If someone you don’t know or don’t want to communicate with tries to contact you with Messenger, there are a few things you can do.
You can block the person during a conversation, add the person to your Block list in Messenger settings, or block the person who has sent you a contact request.
People you’ve blocked in Messenger can’t see when you’re online and can’t send you instant messages.
To block someone during a conversation
1
Choose Block at the bottom of the page.
2
You see a page asking you to confirm that you want to block the person. Choose Yes, Block.
The person is added to your Block list.
To add someone directly to your Block list
1
Go to Messenger by pressing the Msgr key on the keyboard or by choosing Messenger on the home page.
2
Choose Settings.
3
Choose Edit your Allow and Block lists.
4
From your Allow list, choose the name of the person you want to block, and then choose Continue.
5
On the following page, choose Block, and then choose Save Changes.
To block someone who has sent you a contact request in Messenger
1
On the contact request page for this person, choose No, block this person, and then choose
No, don’t add this person.
You will not appear on the person’s contact list, so they will not be able to see when you are online and they cannot send you instant messages.
The person will not appear on your contact list, so you will not be able to see when they are online and you cannot send them instant messages.

Few things in life are as nice as chatting with friends. On MSN TV, you can have lively online discussions with groups of people in chat rooms.
Things move fast in chat rooms, so have your keyboard ready! With MSN TV, you can choose from a wide variety of chat rooms, and you’re almost certain to find one you enjoy.
In this section, we’ll discuss choosing a chat room, creating your chat nickname, and what it’s like in a chat room.
Choose Help from anywhere in Chat for more information.
Choosing a chat room
With so much going on these days, there’s lots to chat about.
You can chat about important things or you can chat about fun things. It’s all up to you. You just have to choose a chat room. To make it easier, chat rooms are organized into categories.
Got something on your mind but you’re not sure what category it fits into? You can search all of the chat rooms to find what you want.
To browse chat rooms by category

Choose Chat on the home page.

On the main Chat page, choose a category.
A list of chat rooms in that category appears. If the list is long, press Page Down on your keyboard to scroll down the list.

Type a topic in the text box at the bottom of the page.

Creating a chat nickname
Before you can begin chatting, you need to create a chat nickname, which other people see when you send messages to a chat room.
When you first enter a chat room, you’ll be prompted to create a nickname.
To create your nickname
1
On the page that prompts you to create a nickname, choose Create Nickname.

Type the nickname you want to create, and then choose Create.
If the name has already been chosen by someone else, you see a page that asks you to type in a different name or to choose a nickname from a list.
Otherwise, you see a confirmation that your nickname has been created.

Choose Join Room to return to the chat room you came from.
To change your nickname
1
From anywhere in Chat, choose Change nickname.
The Change nickname page appears.

Type your new nickname, and then choose Change.
Inside a chat room
Being in a chat room is a lot like being at a party.
There are lots of people talking. There may be a few who are quiet. There may be several conversations going on at the same time. Usually, conversations move as fast as people can type.
Just like at a real party, you may want to whisper something to somebody without everybody hearing you. MSN TV allows you to send a personal message that won’t appear to anyone else in the chat room.
Unfortunately, sometimes there are people you just don’t want to chat with. If you choose Ignore, you won’t see the messages they send to the chat room.
To whisper to someone

While you’re in a chat room, choose Whisper.
A list of all the people currently in the chat room appears.

Choose a person to whisper to.
3
Type your message in the text box and choose Whisper Message.
Note
Although your whispered message appears in the main conversation page, only you and the person you’re whispering to can see it.
To ignore someone
1
While you’re in a chat room, choose Ignore.
A list of all the people currently in the chat room appears.

Choose the box next to the nickname of the person you want to ignore, and then choose Ignore.
You won’t see the messages this person sends to the chat room.

Settings and Account let you turn things on or off, make changes, or get information about your
MSN TV service.
You can also do things such as add a user, set user restrictions, and view your billing information. You can even control the size of the text that you see on Web pages.
This section provides an overview of a few of the things you can do in Settings and Account. To learn more, choose Help from any page in Settings or Account.
Adding users to your MSN TV account
When you first signed up for MSN TV, you created an account. You can add up to 10 additional users to that same account at no charge.
Each user gets their own e-mail address, password, contacts list for Messenger, Favorites list, and other personal settings.
To add a user

Sign in to MSN TV as the primary user
(the user you created when you registered).

On the home page, choose Account.

On the Account settings index page, choose Manage extra users.

Choose Add a User and follow the instructions you see.

Setting user restrictions for a child
Are you concerned about a child’s use of the Internet? You can limit their access by setting user restrictions on their MSN TV account.
When you create an account for a child under 13, the account automatically has these settings:
• Web access is limited to help prevent the child from accessing Web pages with mature content
• Mail is turned on
• Messenger and Chat are turned off
If you choose, you can turn off the Web surfing restriction or prevent access to Mail.
Teach children never to give out personal information to anyone online and to use common sense when surfing the Web and using e-mail.
To set or change user restrictions
1
Sign in to MSN TV as the primary user.
2
On the home page, choose Account.
3
On the Account settings index page, choose Manage extra users.
4
Choose Restrict a User and follow the instructions you see.
Making Web pages easier to read
You can easily change the size of the text you see on Web pages. You might want to make the text size larger for easier reading or smaller so that you can see more text on your screen at one time. You can also make Web pages easier to read by using the Resize Page key on your keyboard.
To change the text size on Web pages
1
In Settings, choose Web settings.
You see the Web settings index.

Centers are gateways to online news, games, stores, and more. You don’t have to look all over the
Internet to find the latest news, fun things to do, and trustworthy online stores. MSN TV has already gathered the information for you.
For example, Entertainment has news, articles, and gossip on show business. Sports lets you know the score about your favorite athletes, competitions, and teams. Games lets you play all sorts of online games. Shop allows you to go to the mall without ever leaving home.
You can customize News, Money, and Weather to get the information you want. This section shows you how.

Customizing News, Money, and Weather
News
News has a wide variety of news stories, from the top headlines to health news to opinions. It’s a great place to start your day. News is normally customized to show local news for your area, based on the ZIP code you provided when you registered for MSN TV. If you want to get news for another local area, you can change your city at any time.
To get local news for a different city

Press the Home key on your keyboard, and then choose News.

Choose Local, and then choose Change City.

Type a different city name or ZIP code.
Money
In Money, you’ll find the latest business and financial news. You can also track your favorite stocks. Quotes for your top three stocks appear on your home page so you can track their progress at a glance.

There’s much more than just text and pictures on the Internet. Music, radio, and video clips and broadcasts make the Web come alive with an amazing variety of content.
With MSN TV you can enjoy Windows Media
® content on your TV and home entertainment center. This section shows you how to find audio and video content on the Web and how to use the Media Player.
Listening to music and radio
Many Web sites let you listen to music clips and radio broadcasts. There’s lots more than the latest pop and hip-hop hits. You can find Web sites that feature all kinds of music, including country, jazz, classical, blues, Latin, ballads, rock, religious, and swing.
Besides music clips, there are radio stations that broadcast on the Internet. Since these radio stations aren’t limited by antenna reception, you can listen to stations based all over the world.
Online broadcasts of audio or video programming are sometimes called Webcasts.
Watching videos
Lots of Web sites have video clips, too. There’s something for almost every interest. You can find news broadcasts from other countries. You can see movie trailers of upcoming box office hits and view video clips of current events. You can even see history and art video clips at some museum sites.
Finding Windows Media-compatible audio and video content online
There are lots of ways to get
Windows Media-compatible audio and video content. For example, friends can send you their music and video attachments with their e-mail.
To find audio and video content
• Press the Music or the Videos key on your keyboard.
• Choose Entertainment on your MSN TV home page.
• Press the Search key on your keyboard. In the text box, type music or video or Webcast and the specific kind of content you’re looking for. Use lots of keywords to narrow down your search.
Here are some other ways to find things to watch and listen online.
• Try going to the Web site of a favorite radio station, radio network, news program, movie theater, or movie studio.
• QuickTime and Real Audio and Video formats are not supported.

Using the Media Player controls
In a movie theater, a projectionist runs the projector so that you can relax and watch the movie. On
MSN TV
, the Media Player is your projectionist. It’s always ready to show you video clips, play music, or let you enjoy other programming online.
When you choose a music, video, or radio link on a Web page, the Media Player opens, and then the controls appear. The controls in the Media Player work something like the controls on a VCR or a CD player. You can choose
Play, Pause, or Stop.
When you choose a windows Media-compatible music, video, or radio link on a Web page, the Media Player opens automatically. If it doesn’t, choose Play.
To learn more about using Media Player, choose Help from the home page.
Here are some tips on using the Media Player
• Look for the Windows MediaPlayer version of the media you want to watch or listen to. QuickTime and
Real Audio and Video formats are not supported.
• You don’t need to download any additional programs to watch video or listen to music.
• If you are connecting to MSN TV over a phone line, look for media files that play at 28k, low speed, or
Narrowband speed. Choosing a higher speed may cause files to play slowly or incompletely.
• Media files play differently depending on how you’re connecting to MSN TV, how large the file is, and how much traffic there is on the Web site that provides the file.
• If a file is long, it may take a few seconds for
Media Player to load the file from the Web site.
While Media Player is preparing a file, the controls may show Pause instead of Play. The file will automatically start after it has loaded completely.

It’s always nice to get pictures of someone you care about. With
MSN TV, your friends and family can e-mail you their photos, and you can view the photos on your TV.
If you have a digital camera and a compatible memory card reader, you can send your photos to others, too. You can also use your Internet player to display on your TV photos that you’ve taken.
What you’ll need
You’ll need these items to view, send, and print your own photos.
• A digital camera (sold separately)
• A compatible USB memory card reader
(sold separately)
• A USB cable (sold separately)
To find out which memory card readers are compatible with your Internet player, press the Photos key on your keyboard and choose Help on the Photos page. Once you have a memory card reader, all you need to do is connect it to one of the USB ports on the back of your Internet player.

Receiving and viewing photos in e-mail
When you get an e-mail with a photo attached, a paper clip appears to the left of the e-mail message in your Inbox.
To open and view photos you receive in e-mail

Choose the e-mail with the photos to open it.
The e-mail opens in a new page. Below the date, you see a small picture icon and information about the pictures that are attached (see the picture to the left for an example).

Choose this information to open the photos.
Photos viewer opens. Here, you can print, view a slideshow, or see photo thumbnails.

Choose Done when you’re ready to go back to the e-mail message.

Viewing and sending your own photos
Once you have your memory card reader connected to your Internet player, you’re ready to view or send your pictures.
To view your photos

Insert the memory card into your card reader. Be careful to insert it according to the documentation that came with your card reader.
A message appears on your screen confirming that you have inserted the memory card and indicating how many photos are on the card.

Press Photos on your keyboard to view these photos.
To see a slideshow of your photos

On the Photos viewer page, choose View Slideshow.
The slideshow starts. After 15 seconds, the controls are hidden.

To end a slideshow, choose Done. If the controls are hidden, press OK on your keyboard to see the slideshow controls, and then choose Done.
To send a photo

Press Photos on your keyboard to view your photos.
If you’ve inserted the memory card into your card reader, the Photos page appears with your pictures.

Choose View Photos.

Choose Send Photos.
The Photos picker page appears.

To select a photo to send, choose the checkbox to the left of it.
You can send more than one at a time, so be sure to press Page Down to see all of your photos.

Connecting your printer to your Internet player is easy.

How to print
Using the Print panel, you can print most things you see on your screen.
There are two ways to get to the Print panel on MSN TV.
• Press Print on your keyboard.
• Press Menu on your keyboard, and then choose Print on the Menu panel.
Depending on the model of your printer, it may take a minute or so for printing to start. While you’re printing, the Internet player is busy doing that task and can’t do anything else.

In a car, you buckle your seat belt for safety. You lock your doors for security. When you go online, there are also simple things that you can do to help keep yourself, your personal information, and your family safe and secure.
First and foremost, be careful about giving out personal information to people or Web sites that you don’t know.
Sometimes, people may ask you for personal information in an e-mail, a chat, or an instant message. They may even pretend to be officials of a business. Use caution and common sense.

How MSN TV helps keep you safe
How MSN TV helps keep your information safe
When you register for the MSN TV service, you give us your name, address, phone number, and billing information.
We use this information to create your MSN TV account, including your .NET Passport. In addition, we use your
ZIP code to provide local information on the home page and in the News and Weather centers. You can choose a different city any time by choosing News or Weather on the home page.
We do not rent, sell, or give your information to any company outside of Microsoft without your permission.
We use state-of-the-art online encryption to help ensure that the information you give us during registration remains safe and secure.
The MSN TV Privacy Statement provides more detail on how we use your information and the steps we take to help ensure your online security. To read the MSN TV
Privacy Statement at any time, choose Account from the home page, and then choose Review agreements
and policies.
How MSN TV keeps you safe from viruses
Since your Internet player doesn’t have a hard drive, it’s essentially immune from viruses, or malicious computer programs people sometimes send through e-mail. In addition, the e-mail program we use has built-in virus protection. You don’t need to worry about your Internet player catching a virus.

Safeguarding your information on Web sites
Many Web sites give you the chance to sign up for a newsletter, make a purchase, or get information that’s customized to your interests.
Before you give information to or fill out a form on a Web site, you should always check to see if the site is secure. A secure site electronically encrypts the information that you send, so that no one can “eavesdrop” on it.
•
Here’s how to determine if a site is secure
Look for a padlock at the bottom of the screen when you’re on the Web site.
• Check to see that the Web address for the page begins with https (the s after the p stands for secure).
To check the Web address, press Menu on your keyboard or remote.
Make sure that you see both of these — a padlock and a
Web address for the page that begins with https — before you provide sensitive personal information to a Web site.
Helping avoid junk mail
Junk e-mail, or spam, can be a big frustration, so you probably want to limit it as much as possible. There are several things you can do to help avoid spam.
Be careful who you give your e-mail address to.
Some companies may sell your e-mail address, which can increase the amount of unwanted e-mail you receive.
Be sure you share your address only with people and companies you trust.
Don’t reply to unwanted e-mail
even if you see a link that says “unsubscribe.” That just lets a spammer know that the message has reached a valid address. If you see e-mail in your Inbox that appears to be spam, the best thing to do is delete it right away.
You can set up a junk mail filter
to help reduce the amount of junk mail you see in your Inbox. In addition, you can decide how quickly junk mail is deleted from the Junk mail folder.
You can block the sender of any unwanted e-mail you receive
to prevent that person or company from sending you e-mail in the future.

Protecting yourself in Messenger
Messenger allows you to communicate with people around the world.
Use common sense precautions with
Messenger: don’t accept contact requests from people you don’t know, and don’t give out personal information, such as a credit card number, during a conversation.
If you feel uncomfortable with someone who is trying to contact you or who has contacted you, there are a few things you can do: block the person directly from the conversations panel, add the person to your Block list in
Messenger Settings, or block the person from making you a contact. People you have blocked in Messenger can’t see when you’re online and can’t send you instant messages.
For information on blocking someone during a conversation or adding someone to your Block list, see page 34.
To block someone who has sent you a contact request in Messenger

On the contact request page for this person, choose No, block this person, and then choose
No, don’t add this person.
You will not appear on the person’s contact list, so they will not be able to see when you are online and they cannot send you instant messages.
The person will not appear on your contact list, so you will not be able to see when they are online and you cannot send them instant messages.
Helping keep kids safe online
You can limit a child’s access to the
Internet by setting user restrictions on their MSN TV account.
When you create an account for a child under 13, the account automatically has these settings:
• Web surfing is limited to help prevent the child from accessing Web pages with mature content
• Mail is turned on
• Messenger and Chat are turned off
If you choose, you can turn off Mail, and can change the
Web surfing restrictions placed on the child’s account.
You can also set restrictions for other users on your
MSN TV account.
Teach children never to give out personal information to anyone online and to use common sense when surfing the Web and using e-mail.
