Introduction

Thank you for buying this Sweex Wireless LAN USB 2.0 Adapter 54 Mbps. This USB adapter allows you to set up a wireless network easily and in no time at all. The USB adapter complies with all international standards for wireless communication such as IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11g and CE.

It is compatible with all major operating systems and has a maximum data transfer speed of 54 Mbps, which is more than sufficient for wireless communication with the Internet, for example. Thanks to the USB interface, the adapter is easy to use with portable or notebook computers.

Depending on conditions, the USB adapter has a range of up to 30 metres indoors and up to 75 metres outdoors. For security reasons, the USB adapter is compatible with the WEP 64/128/256-bit protocol, which means that data is encrypted before it is transmitted. The compact design of this USB adapter makes it easy to carry around and ideal for use while travelling, in the office or at home.

Security

Security can be set at 64 or 128-bit encryption. We advise you to use 128-bit encryption. The use of WEP (Wireless Encryption Protocol) requires extra computing power, so performance will be a little lower than without WEP. However, in practice this will be barely noticeable.

N.B.!

Before the encryption codes are configured, the new encryption codes must be set in the router first. If the router already has encryption codes, these codes can be filled in for the new wireless product.

Setting WEP encryption

Set the “Authentication Mode” to “Shared Key”. Then set "Key length" to 64 bit or 128 bit.

Under “Key Value #1”, fill in a number code for encryption protection. For 64 bit, you have to fill in 10 characters and for 128 bit, you have to fill in 26 characters. Random numbers from 0 up to and including 9 and letters from A up to and including H can be used. Fill in at least one field and no more than four fields. Click on "Apply" after you have filled in the codes.

If the wireless network is configured with Windows XP configuration software, remove the check mark from: "the key is provided for me automatically”. Select “WEP” under "Data encryption”. Enter the network key (encryption code) that matches the code in the router.

If you configure the wireless network with the supplied software, please refer to the comprehensive English-language manual on the CD-ROM.

Warranty

All articles that are carried under the name Sweex Essentials have a 3-year term of guarantee. Only the Sweex Digital photo and video cameras have a 2-year term of guarantee. We do not provide support or warranty for the supplied software or (rechargeable) batteries.
