Changing your UvA-net ID password – Self-support
Changing your UvA-net ID password – Self-support / personal computer:
Windows
Choose a quiet moment and read the instructions thoroughly. It is important that you follow
the right steps in order to change your password in the simplest possible way. This may take 15
to 30 minutes, depending on the circumstances. To avoid having any problems with
smartphones and tablets which gather data from UvA servers, ensure you have all such devices
to hand.
Step 1: Put all your smartphones and tablets in airplane mode
PLEASE NOTE: complete this step if you use UvA web services such as UvA-mail, UvA-agenda,
Eduroam and so on through your smartphone, tablet or similar devices.
Android
• Briefly press the on/off button and choose Airplane Mode.
• Switch on Airplane Mode.
iPhone/iPad
• Settings > Airplane Mode > On.
Step 2: Remove network drives
PLEASE NOTE: complete this step to prevent your account from being blocked.
• Click the Windows start button at the bottom left to open the Windows menu.
• Click on Computer.
• Right-click on a network drive.
• Click on Disconnect.
• Repeat for every network drive.
Step 3: Disconnect from UvAVPN
PLEASE NOTE: complete this step if you are connected to the UvA network through UvAVPN
(because you are not at a UvA site). Otherwise skip this step.
• On the right of the bar at the bottom of the screen, click on the Junos Pulse/UvAVPN icon and
disconnect. If the icon is not visible, click on ‘Show hidden icons’ first.
Step 4: Change password
• Close all your programmes except for your internet browser, so you can still read the
instructions.
• In a new browser window, go to id.uva.nl.
• Log in with your current password.
• If you are asked to set up the security questions, do so first.
• Click on Profile in the left-hand column.
• Select Change password.
• Change your password.
• Log out.
• The amended password will automatically be applied to all UvA web services such as UvA-mail,
UvA-agenda, Eduroam etc.
Step 5: Check the Windows Credential Manager
If you use the Windows Credential Manager, you need to apply the changes there too.
• Use the Change Password manual to check in Credential Manager (see page 5) whether or not
you use Credential Manager.
• If you do, follow the instructions in the manual and apply the changes.
Step 6: Restart your computer
• The Windows password is not changed on self-support or personal computers. You will
therefore continue to log in using the same details as before.
Step 7: Connect to UvAVPN
PLEASE NOTE: complete this step if you are not at a UvA site. Otherwise skip this step.
• Click on the Windows start button at the bottom left of the screen.
• Choose All Programs > Juniper Networks > JunosPulse > JunosPulse.
• Connect to the UvA network through UvAVPN.
• Use your new password.
Step 8: Set up Eduroam again
PLEASE NOTE: complete this step if you are connected through Eduroam. Otherwise skip this step.
• Disconnect from Eduroam.
• Reconnect to Eduroam and use the new password. Eduroam sometimes does not accept the new
password and continues to request your password. If that happens, the SecureW2 software used
for Eduroam will need to be reinstalled.
First remove the old SecureW2 software:
• Click the Windows start button at the bottom left to open the Windows menu.
• Open the Control Panel and select Programs > Programs and Features.
• Right-click on SecureW2 and click on Uninstall.
You now need to reinstall SecureW2:
• Connect to the UvAguests wireless network (connect to HvAguests if you are at an AUAS/HvA
site).
• Open an internet browser and go to http://wifiportal.uva.nl.
PLEASE NOTE: do not use wifiportal.hva.nl.
• Enter your UvA-net ID @uva.nl (PLEASE NOTE: this is not your email address) and enter the
new password.
• Click on JoinNow.
• After completing these steps, you can reconnect to Eduroam.
Step 9: Restore the connection to the network drives
• Reconnect to the network drives.
• Read the manual on Connecting to network folders.
Step 10: Change your password on all your smartphones and tablets
PLEASE NOTE: complete this step to prevent your account from being blocked.
• If you have several mobile devices, update each device one by one.
• Read the manual for Changing your password on a smartphone and tablet (see following pages).

Step 5: Change password for other programmes
If you use any other programmes which use your UvA-net ID to retrieve data (such as files on
network drives), you also need to change your password in those programmes.
Sometimes a programme may appear to work and no password request is made. You must still
change the password, because otherwise the account will be blocked at a later date.
You should also change passwords in programmes which save those passwords for you (what are
known as passwords managers). Some well-known programmes used for this are iCloud, aWallet
and Datavault.
