child. It is of great concern that research continues to tell us how many child car seats
are still incorrectly fitted. Please read carefully and fully understand the whole of this

*DO NOT USE THE EXPLORER SPORT ON A PASSENGER SEAT
FITTED WITH AN AIRBAG
Do not fit the Explorer Sport on a side of rear facing vehicle seat.
Please read the whole instruction guide and make sure you fully understand how to install and
use the Explorer Sport correctly.
Always keep the instruction guide with the Explorer Sport in a safe place.
It is safer to use the Explorer Sport on the rear vehicle seat.
Do not use the Explorer Sport in the home, it has only been designed to be used in your car.
Do not place anything such as a towel or cushion under the Explorer Sport as this could affect
the performance of the seat in an accident.
Never buy a second hand child car seat.
Always replace the Explorer Sport after an accident, it may have unseen damage.
When not in use always secure the Explorer Sport by the vehicle seat belt.
All passengers must be secured by law if there are restraints available.
Always secure loose items in the car when travelling.
Cover the Explorer Sport if it is left in direct sun light, plastic and metal surfaces get very hot and
could burn. The seat cover is also likely to fade.
The safety harness must be used at all times when your child is in the Explorer Sport.
Do not make unauthorised modifications or alterations to the Explorer Sport.
The Explorer Sport must never be used without the seat cover being correctly fitted. If you replace
the cover, only use one recommended by the manufacturer.
Do not allow children to play with the Explorer Sport.
Do not leave children alone in the car.
Do not place the Explorer Sport on a table or work top, always use the floor.
Never leave a child unattended in the Explorer Sport either in or outside the car.
Make sure that all folding vehicle seats are securely latched.
Avoid storing the Explorer Sport near a direct heat source such as a radiator.
Do not place heavy objects on top of the Explorer Sport.
Always store the Explorer Sport in a dry environment.
Check your Explorer Sport regularly for wear and tear.

HOW TO USE THE Explorer Sport
The Explorer Sport must always be fitted forward facing.
In the United Kingdom the Explorer Sport can be used on the vehicles front* or rear seat.
Do not use on side or rearward facing vehicle seats. Statistically, in most vehicles the safest
location is the centre of the rear seat (check your vehicle handbook).
GROUP 1
The Explorer Sport can be used from 9kgs (20lbs) to 18kgs (40lbs), approximately 9 months to 4
years using a 3 point LAP AND DIAGONAL seat belt or a 2 point LAP belt ­approved to UN/ECE
Regulation No.16 or equivalent standards.
GROUP 2
The Explorer Sport can be used from 15kgs (33lbs) to 25kgs (55lbs), approximately 4 years to 6
years using a 3 point LAP AND DIAGONAL seat belt.

BEFORE YOU USE THE Explorer Sport IN THE CAR - GROUP 1
HARNESS ADJUSTMENT:
The shoulder straps must be at the correct height for your child’s shoulders before you
use the Explorer Sport in the car. The shoulder straps must be positioned level with or
just above your child’s shoulders. Always position the shoulder straps just above the
shoulders if there is any doubt.

If the Explorer Sport is not installed in the car,
carefully place the child seat on a level floor surface.

With one hand press down and hold the harness
release button (1).
With your other hand placed behind both shoulder
straps and below the chest pads slowly pull towards
you and fully loosen the harness (2).
Push the red buckle release button (3) down to undo
the harness and place the shoulder straps over the
sides of the Explorer Sport.
BEFORE YOU use THE Explorer Sport IN THE CAR - GROUP 1 (CONT)
HARNESS ADJUSTMENT (CONT):
Put your child in the Explorer Sport. Carefully place the harness around your child
making sure there are no twists in the harness webbing.
Join the two buckle tongues together and push them firmly into the crotch strap buckle
until you hear a 'click'. Check the harness is securely fastened. To identify the correct
position for the shoulder straps, locate the head support adjuster wheels positioned
on either side of the seat (see page 5 no.19). The shoulder straps are attached to
the head support enabling you to adjust both the shoulder straps and head support
together. Adjust the shoulder straps to the correct height for your child's shoulders by
turning both head support adjuster wheels in the required direction.
CROTCH STRAP ADJUSTMENT:
The crotch strap can be adjusted as your child grows.
Three positions are available and the adjuster is situated in a slot in the seat shell
underneath the comfort pad.
Press and hold the red adjuster down and slide the crotch strap buckle into the desired
position.
The correct position for the crotch strap buckle is low over the pelvic area not on the
stomach.

Put your child in the Explorer Sport. Carefully place the harness over the child making
sure there are no twists in the harness webbing.

THE Explorer Sport IS NOT CHILD PROOF
In an emergency, the buckle has been designed to be released quickly. Unfortunately
the more inquisitive children might learn how to undo the buckle or escape from the
harness. The harness and buckle system has to comply with the European Standard
ECE R44.04 It is very important that the harness is correctly adjusted and children
encouraged to stay in the harness system.
FITTING and REMOVING YOUR CHILD - group 1 (CONT.)
OPERATING THE HARNESS (cont.):
Tighten the harness by pulling the harness adjuster
strap (1) until your child is secure. The harness must fit
your child firmly but not make your child ­­uncomfortable.
There should be just enough room to insert two flat
fingers between the shoulder straps and your child’s
chest. It is important that the lap section of the harness
is low down on the pelvic area and not on the stomach.
Make sure the chest pads and buckle pad are correctly
in place as they are an important safety feature and
must always be used.

Removing your child from the Explorer
Sport:
To remove your child from the Explorer Sport, press
down and hold the harness release button (1). With
your other hand placed behind both shoulder straps and
below the chest pads slowly pull towards you and fully
loosen the harness (2).
Push the red buckle release button (3) down to undo the
harness and carefully place the shoulder straps over the
sides of the Explorer Sport.

Before you use the Explorer Sport your child must weigh a minimum of
9kgs (20lbs) and be able to sit up for a long period of time.
Using a lap and diagonal seat belt:
Place the Explorer Sport facing forward on the vehicle seat*.
Move the Explorer Sport into the fully reclined position by squeezing the red lever (1)
under the front of the seat shell and at the same time pulling the seat shell upwards (2).
This will give you more room behind the seat shell and help make the installation easier.

Using a lap and diagonal seat belt (CONT.):
Turn the seat belt tension wheel (1) in the direction of the green arrow to move it to the
highest position.
Pass the lap and diagonal seat belt through the space immediately behind the seat
shell taking care not to thread it behind the harness straps.
Place the lap section of the seat belt behind the seat belt tension plate (2) and through
the two red lap belt guides (3). Make sure the seat belt is not twisted.
Lift the red hinged cover on the side lock off (4) fully open by pushing the red clip
down. Position the diagonal section of the seat belt across the ribbed face of the lock
off.

Using a lap and diagonal seat belt (CONT.):
Push the Explorer Sport firmly into the vehicle seat, pull the diagonal belt tight but
do not over tighten, you still have to engage the tension plate. Holding the belt tight,
close the hinged cover and press hard to trap the diagonal belt and re-fasten the
cover (1). The seat belt should now be locked.
To engage the tension plate, turn the tension plate wheel (2) in the direction of the
red arrow until it locks into position. There is a tension plate wheel on either side of
the Explorer Sport. Engaging the tension plate is made easier by turning both wheels
together.

Check the seat belt is correctly routed and the seat belt buckle is in the
right position. (Refer page 14 Seat Belt Buckle Position)
The Explorer Sport should now be securely fitted. To check, firmly pull the seat harness
towards you, there should be no excessive movement forward or to the side.

Using a lap belt:
Place the Explorer Sport facing forward on the vehicle seat*.

the lap belt as instructed in your vehicle handbook. Do not over tighten, you still have
to engage the tension plate.

Using a lap belt (CONT.):
To engage the tension plate, refer to diagram 14, page 13. Turn the tension plate wheel
(2) in the direction of the red arrow until it clicks into position. There is a tension plate
wheel on either side of the Explorer Sport. Engaging the tension plate is made easier by
turning both wheels together.
The Explorer Sport should now be securely fitted. To check, firmly pull the seat harness
towards you, there should be no excessive movement forward or to the side.
Check the lap belt is correctly routed and the seat belt buckle is in the
correct position (see below).
Seat belt buckle position:
When you have installed the Explorer Sport it is very important that you check that the
seat belt buckle is in the correct position.

5kgs (33lbs) to 25kgs (55lbs)
Approx.. 4 to 6 years
Before you use the Explorer Sport as a Group 2 car seat your child
must weigh a minimum of 15kgs (33lbs)
Before you install the Explorer Sport in the car as a Group 2 car
seat you must remove the safety harness from the seat.
Removing the child safety harness:
Press the red release button to loosen the harness.
Unhook the shoulder pad securing straps from the metal tabs located at the back of the
Explorer Sport (15) and pass the straps through the slots in the back of the seat shell
and the seat cover (16).

Removing the child safety harness (CONT):
Locate the metal harness plate at the back of the Explorer Sport and unhook both
shoulder straps (17).
Pull the shoulder straps through the slots in the seat shell and then through the seat
cover (18).
Pass each shoulder strap complete with buckle and chest pad through the larger slots
located in the bottom of the seat cover and shell.
Pass the crotch strap buckle through the slots in the buckle pad, cover and seat shell
and stow under the seat shell.

USING A LAP AND DIAGONAL SEAT BELT:
Place the Explorer Sport facing forward on the vehicle seat*
In the Group 2 stage the Explorer Sport must only be used in the full upright position,
never in a reclined position.
Place your child in the Explorer Sport.
Carefully pull the lap and diagonal seat belt out across the Explorer Sport and your
child, making sure you pass the seat belt through the seat belt guide slot in the bottom
side of the seat shell (1), marked by red arrow, before you fasten the seat belt into the
buckle (2). The lap section of the seat belt should now be positioned across your child’s
pelvic area and not across the stomach. Pull the diagonal belt to remove any slack
in the lap section. The seat belt buckle must not interfere with this process. Insert the
diagonal belt into red seat belt guide positioned on the side of the seat (3). Move the
seat belt guide so that there are no kinks or twists in the seat belt.

25kgs (55lbs) or your child’s eye level exceeds the top of the seat shell.

Common installation problems:
Q. The seat belt buckle rests on or around the frame of the Explorer Sport.
A. It may be possible to try a different seating position.

Removing the seat cover:
Press the harness release button and fully loosen the harness.
Push the red buckle release button to undo the harness.
First you need to detach the head support. Unhook the shoulder pad securing straps
from the metal tabs located at the back of the Explorer Sport and pass the straps
through the slots in the back of the seat shell and the cover.
Locate the metal harness plate at the back of the Explorer Sport and unhook both
shoulder straps.
Pull the shoulder straps through the slots in the seat shell and then through the seat
cover.
Pass each shoulder strap complete with buckle and chest pad through the larger slots
located on each side in the bottom of the seat cover and shell.
Locate the narrow looped straps fastened through the middle two slots in the back of
the seat shell and through the two slots in the head support frame. Detach each strap
from the metal bracket and remove from the seat shell.
Detach the head support by unscrewing the wheel nut at the back of the Explorer Sport.
Rotate the head support adjustment wheel until the head support is fully extended.
Carefully remove the head support from the seat shell to enable you to remove the head
support cover. Do not remove the polystyrene insert in the head support.
Pass the crotch strap buckle through the slots in the buckle pad, cover and shell.
You are now able to remove the seat cover. Never try to remove the inner foam
protection
Refitting the seat cover:
Refit the seat cover and harness by reversing the above instructions.
Check that the harness is not twisted.

Cleaning the seat shell and harness:
Wipe clean using a mild soap and warm water.
You must not use detergents, solvents or strong soaps. This may weaken the seat shell
or harness.
You must not remove, dismantle or alter any part of the seat shell or harness.
You must not oil or lubricate any part of the seat shell or harness.
Cleaning the seat cover & head support cover:
Hand wash only at a maximum of 30 degrees.
(See wash label on the back of the Explorer Sport seat cover)
Do not iron, dry clean or tumble dry.
Dry flat, away from direct heat and sunlight.
Cleaning the shoulder pads:
Wipe clean using a mild soap and warm water.
You must not use detergents, solvents or strong soaps. This may damage the shoulder
pads.

2. The Explorer Sport is in the full upright position, never in a reclined position.
3. You have fitted the Explorer Sport as illustrated in the manufacturer’s instruction
guide.
4. The seat belt is not twisted.
5. You have removed all slack from the seat belt.

workmanship.
