Using the laptop for Assessments
1. Open the case and take out the laptop and power cable (2 parts).
2. Connect round end of power cable to round socket in the back of the laptop
3. Connect power cable parts, and plug into the wall, Switch on wall socket
4. If you are using a mouse, connect it to one of the USB ports (flat, 1cm) at the
side or back of the laptop. If not, use the touch-pad or blue button
5. Open laptop and press power switch (round button at top of keyboard)
6. Read the Information Security sheet
7. Login using the account name and password (if you have forgotten these,
contact Mary Timpany 01292-267675)
8. Move the cursor (arrow) by touching the dark grey square at the near side to
you. The two squares below the touch pad will be used when you are
instructed to click.
9. Move the cursor by tracing the cursor on the touch pad, the arrow shown on
the screen will change to show a finger and hand when you move the cursor
over the ‘IAF User’ picture of a snowflake. Click by pressing the bottom, left
square below the touch pad.
10. You must have your ‘pen drive’ connected into the back of the laptop, if you
are unsure about any of the connections in this instruction sheet please ask
before you remove the laptop from the office.
11. Once you open the laptop you will see a folder(s) named Client 1 etc, as you
cannot save a file on the hard drive of the laptop you must move the cursor
over the folder and right –click. Move the cursor to the word Copy and click
using the left hand button.
12. Open up your ‘pen-drive’ by moving the cursor to the start word shown at the
bottom left hand side of the screen..move the cursor to the ‘My Computer’
words and click…move to the E drive shown and double click…your pen drive
is now open.
13. Move the cursor to the ‘Edit’ word shown on the top of the file underneath the
blue bar if a list does not appear click the word and a list should appear. Move
the cursor to the word ‘Paste’ and click. The file you copied will now be saved
on the ‘pen-drive’.

14. You can now move the cursor over the folder which has been copied, rightclick and you should select ‘Rename’ and type in a new folder name. Move the
cursor off the folder once you have renamed and click the white background.
15. Double-click on the appropriate folder to open and begin to update, you can
update the file you wish to change or begin by moving the cursor over the file
and right-click to open, move the cursor over the word ‘open’ the file will now
open for you top begin typing.
16. All sections will expand as you type. You must scroll down the document by
using the scroll bar on the right hand side of the page and clicking the cursor
to where you wish to begin to type.
17. Once you have finished save the file by moving the cursor to the word ‘File’ at
the top of the screen and select ‘Save As’
18. Be careful once the Save As screen appears to check the ‘Save in ‘ and the
‘File name’ sections and that they are correct.
19. Move the cursor over to the ‘Save’ button and click.
20. The file is now saved in the folder you have on the pen drive. Close the
document you have been working on by moving the cursor over to the ‘X’ at
the top right hand side of the screen/document and click.
21. Once you have finished with the files within the folder on your pen drive move
the cursor to the bottom right hand side of the screen to remove the pen drive
right click until you see the ‘Safely Remove Hardware’ word and move your
cursor to click on these words. You will be presented with a screen entitled
‘Safely Remove Hardware’ the word ‘USB Mass Storage Device’ should be
shaded, move the cursor to the ‘Stop’ button shown and click, then click onto
‘OK’ and then Close.

22. To open an existing assessment, double-click on the appropriate folder shown
on your pen drive.
23. Double-click on the appropriate file to bring up the information
24. To print a form, select File/Print while the document is open on your screen.
Select the printer from the list, and select OK
25. When you have finished with the laptop, shut it down (click on ‘Start’ at
bottom left of screen, select ‘Shut Down’ and confirm), disconnect from power
and pack away in case
