1 General
The PSM-R measuring device is meant for long distance position measurement applications,
especially in cases when an active receiver can not be used. It is based on a combined led
transmitter and an optoelectronic receiver, which measures the movement of the reflector or
prism attached to the target. The operator directs the safe light beam to the reflector target and
locks it in a steady position. The beam is reflected from the target back to the receiver where
the receiver recognises it and measures its position accurately up to 100 times a second.
The device is meant for outdoor use and protected against temperature and humidity changes.
It is battery operable, but can also be supplied with an external power supply. When used in
conjunction with a PC a short time period, the device does not need any external power supply.
Supplying is done through the USB communication port.
The devices can measure the movement of the target at a distance of 2 to 400 metres,
depending on the used device type, demanded accuracy, used reflector type and the
environmental conditions. The measuring range can be enlarged and the measuring accuracy
improved by using a better reflector, prism or prism group. The measuring accuracy can also
be improved by using lower measuring speed and filtering the results. While the measuring
area depends of the distance between the device and the target, the absolute movement or
position has to be calculated as a function of the distance. The same reflector can be used
simultaneously by several measuring devices.
1.1 Operating principle
The device consists of a measurement unit (transmitter/receiver), an USB box, a computer and
a retro-reflector to be attached to the target. There is no need for wires, electronic equipment or
power supply in the target. The operating principle is shown in the figure below. The
measurement unit comprises a transceiver in which a light emitting diode sends a light beam
towards the target area, where a reflector returns the light which falls on the surface of the
reflector back towards the measurement unit. Size of the measurement area thus increases
directly as a function of measuring distance.

The measurement unit is attached to a fixed base or to the reference/tracking unit so that it
points to the target and it is connected to the computer via the USB box.

The data flow between the measurement unit and the computer is two-way. The computer
controls all operations of the transceiver through the serial port. In stand-alone operation the
power will be supplied to the unit directly and serial data taken out directly to the control unit. In
such case the control unit must be able to handle the data and operate the unit via serial port.
1.2 Reflector
The type of the necessary retro-reflector is dependent on the measurement distance, weather
conditions, required accuracy level and the employed PSM-R version. To maintain the required
accuracy level in poor weather conditions, better or more reflectors can be employed. A
number of measurement devices can measure the same target simultaneously. There are
several types of reflectors available (with a variety of versions, i.e. reflectors equipped with
blackening filters). A rough division is as follows:

Exact limits are impossible to define, since so many parameters are involved. With long
distances it is probably wise to increase the number of prisms to have adequate compensation
in poor weather conditions.
1.3 Precision
Given resolution values indicate the minimum performance level, which is achieved in good
weather conditions using high speed measurement and suggested reflectors. If the obtained
accuracy is not adequate (which may happen outdoors with long measuring distance and/or
poor conditions), you may use smaller measurement speed or internal filtering for achieving a
more stable result (3 to 5 times better results).
1.4 Signal level
The measurement unit has separate channels for measurement with a signal level between
0..4095. The transmitter power adjustment system tries to set the signal level in the selected
range. Accuracy is increased as a function of signal level, but on the other hand it has to be
less than 4095, so it is good practice to leave enough room for possible variation due to
atmospheric conditions, for example. A good signal level is 1000 to 2000. The unit handles the
signal level and optical power adjustment automatically.
A very important limit value given by the user is the smallest acceptable signal level (Sample
validity). Since the functioning of PSM-R is based on reflection, one should be cautious so that
reflections from the well reflecting backgrounds or ceiling, for example, would not cause "false
results". Typically suitable value is found by checking the mean signal level obtained from the
target and setting the smallest acceptable signal level to about half of that.

2.2 USB-box
The optical unit will be connected to the computer using USB-Box. The power supply to the
optical unit comes through the USB-port.
The USB-Box requires sufficient drivers to be installed to the computer before starting to use
the software. The drivers can be found in the CD. Note that the driver must be installed two
times, physical and logical port.

2.3 RS-box
If the computer has an RS-232 port, the optical unit can
be connected to the computer using RS-Box. The RSBox includes battery for power supply and some
charging electronics. Also a direct external power
supply to the RS-Box is possible.

2.4 Aiming telescope
An external aiming telescope can be attached to the optical unit to make aiming to longer
distances easier. The telescope is preadjusted and points to the target area, when attached to
any optical unit.

3 Operation
3.1 Installation
Select a reflector, which suits the best way the measurement task, distance and object. Mount
the reflector to the selected position and check that it is as well as possible towards the
measuring unit.
Install the measurement unit to the leveling base (if used).
Displacement: Mount the unit to a solid place in a selected distance from the object to be
measured and direct the measurement beam towards the reflector.
Angle: Mount the unit to the object to be measured and direct the measurement beam towards
the reflector.
Connect the measurement unit to the USB-box. Connect the USB-box to the selected USB
port.
Change the set-up definitions in the software to fit the measurement task and installation. Start
the program.

3.2 Long term monitoring installation
TRANSCEIVER MOUNTING
In short term testing it is important to be able to direct the transmitter in a short time, and for
that purpose the device can be equipped with a leveling base. It can be used also in long term
monitoring, but in some cases a rugged adjustment base is more stable. For long term
monitoring (weeks, months, years) it is not critical to be able to adjust the transceiver quickly
and one can use more time for that task.
POWER
PC-powered operation is meant for short term use. For longer use it is recommended to use
analogue output unit with external power supply. When using the analogue output unit, a
12VDC supply is required for the operation.
REFERENCE
For making a reference measurement from time to time for the measurement results, it is
recommended to use a reflector, which is connected to a solid place behind (or in front of) the
measurement reflector. In normal operation this reference is used manually by the operator, by
covering the measuring reflector for a while and uncovering the reference reflector for the time
of reference measurement. If an automatic reference measurement is possible to arrange, it
naturally helps the operator in taking regular references.
COVER
The sensor is protected against temperature change, moisture, and other environmental
effects. It is recommended, however, to protect the optical surfaces against direct rain, snow,
dust or any other uncleanancies to ensure a reliable operation. Additionally, take care of the
regular cleaning of the optical surfaces.

4 Handling and maintenance
The equipment is protected against environmental hazards, (rain, dust, snow, vibration, etc.)
but as optoelectronic equipment it requires careful handling and maintenance.
STORAGE
When the system is not in use, it is recommend keeping the equipment in a safe place,
protected against dust, moisture and mechanical shocks or when it is not possible to remove
the units from their installation bases, to protect the units with their own covers.
CLEANING THE OPTICAL SURFACES
When starting the measuring operation, it is recommended cleaning the optical surfaces from
dust and moisture which might appear during transportation or storage.
HANDLING
The equipment includes optical parts, electronics and precision mechanism. Handle the units
with care, do not drop them on the ground and avoid all unnecessary mechanical shocks to the
units.
CONNECTORS
The units have electrical connectors on the back panel. The connectors are rugged and
environmental proof. However, avoid direct rain penetrating to the contacts, when the cable
connector is connected. Protect connectors properly during transportation or in bad operation
conditions to avoid dust and moisture penetrating the connector and causing bad contacts in
the signal lines.

Limited Warranty
The product has been thoroughly tested and inspected before shipment. All parts (excluding
accumulators) are warranted to be free of defects in material and workmanship for one (1) year
from the date of the shipment.
The Warranty is always subject to the concurrence of the following three conditions:
¾ (1) No claims under this Warranty will be honored unless notice of a defect affecting
any specific item of Products is given to Noptel within the warranty period; and
¾ (2) Any specific item of Products considered by the Buyer to be covered by this
Warranty shall be returned, at the Buyer’s cost, to Noptel Oy together with a copy of
sale document showing the date of purchase within one (1) month from the day of
notice as set out above; and
¾ (3) Noptel Oy shall find such an item of Product returned to Noptel Oy as set forth
above defective due to faulty workmanship or use of defective materials.
If Noptel Oy finds the Product to be defective, Noptel Oy’s liability under this Warranty is limited
to repair or replacement of the Product free of charge, Ex Works (EXW), Oulu, Finland, or
credit for an amount equal to the invoiced value of the defective Product.
¾ When sensing a Product for the repair, please attach an explanation of the defect to
the shipment in order to expedite and facilitate service.
¾ This Warranty excludes all consequential damages.
¾ The Warranty will terminate, if an unauthorised person opens the units during the
warranty period.
¾ This Warranty does not cover defects caused by misuse or improper handling,
installation or maintenance of the products.
¾ Always follow the rules and hints for the proper handling and maintenance given by the
manufacturer. The units contain no user serviceable parts. Manufacturer or dealer is
not liable for damages caused by erroneous measurements or inadequate treatment.
Disposal: Do not dispose this product as unsorted municipal waste.
In the European Union all electrical and electronic products, batteries, and
accumulators must be taken to separate collection at the end of their working
life.
