1.3
Minimum Requirements to Operate the Display
Adapters
1.3.1
PDI Power Supply Connector
Operation of the display adapters only requires supply of two input voltages (+3.3V with a 1A load and +5V with a 2A load) and the corresponding GND connections.
These supply pins are located at the PDI power connector X3:
LCD_5V: X3 4, 6, 8
Connect all power input pins to your power supply and all GND pins.
Corresponding GND: X3 1, 3, 5, 7, 9
There are also pins reserved for 12V backlight supply but currently not used.
Caution:
On a custom board we recommend connecting all available +5V input pins and at least the matching number of GND pins to the power supply system.
Please refer to
for more information.
1.3.2
PDI Data Connector
In order to drive a display at least the LVDS signals, 3V3 logic supply voltage, the /display_enable signal and GND are needed. If the display has touch, then you also need to connect the pins for the touch.

Connectors
Please note that all connections are not to exceed their expressed maximum voltage or current. Maximum signal input values are indicated in this manual and the corresponding display data sheets. As damage from improper connections varies according to use and application, it is the user's responsibility to take appropriate safety measures to ensure that the module connections are protected from overloading through connected peripherals.
2.1
Carrier Board Connectivity (X5, X3)
The new concept of using display adapters such as the LCD-014-x and
LCD-017-x allows to attach a large number of different displays varying in resolution, signal level, type of the backlight, pinout, etc. to the baseboard using always the same connectors. The new PHYTEC
Display-Interface (PDI) has been designed in order not to limit the range of displays connectable. It consists of two universal connectors which provide the connectivity for the display adapter:
The display data connector combines all needed low-current interface signals.
The display power connector provides all voltages needed to supply the display and the LED backlight.
They also allow easy adaption to customer displays.
2.1.1
Display Data Connector (X5)
The display data connector at X5 (40 pin FCC connector 0,5mm pitch) combines various interface signals like LVDS, USB, I
2
C, etc. required to hook up a display, or a front panel, as well as the low-current supply voltage for the logic on the adapter board.

Power
The display adapters operate off two supply voltages +3.3V and +5V.
They are already prepared for using a third supply voltage +12V up to
+24V for driving more powerful backlights.
Low-current +3.3V fed through the Display Data Connector X5 is intended for supplying the photo sensor, EEPROMs, etc. It should not be used to supply a display or backlight. Only in case of connecting low-current displays, it might be possible to renounce the Display
Power Connector. A green LED indicates power presence.
+3.3V with a 1A load will be fed through the Display Power
Connector X3. It supplies the display and the backlight converter. A green LED indicates power presence.
+5V with a 2A load will also be fed through the Display Power
Connector X3. It will be converted to the power needed for the backlight. A green LED indicates power presence.
Caution:
For maximum EMI performance we recommend as a general design rule to connect all GND pins to a solid ground plane.

Mounting to the phyBASE
The phyBASE Carrier Board provides a flexible development platform enabling quick and easy start-up and subsequent programming of the PHYTEC Extension Boards. The Carrier Board is compatible with all phyCARDs and its design allows easy connection of up to two extension boards as well as the display adapters. This supports a fast and convenient prototyping and software evaluation.
Note:
Only features of the phyBASE which are needed to support the functioning of the display adapters are described. Jumper settings and configurations which are not relevant for the use of the display adapters are not described in the following chapters.

Controlling Touch with the phyBASE
Two touch screen controllers are available on the phyCARD Carrier
Board. The choice which controller is chosen to handle the signals from the touch screen is pegged to the audio standard supported by the phyCARD. phyCARDs supporting the AC'97 standard use the Wolfson
WM9712L at U1. Its dual functionality for audio and touch AC97 codec allows connecting 4- and 5-wire touch panels. The touch screen data is then available at the AC'97 interface. phyCARDs delivering HDA compliant audio signals use the Cirrus
Logic HDA Audio CODEC at U17 together with the STMPE811 touch panel controller at U28, which is suitable for 4-wire touch panels only. The touch screen data is then available at the I²C interface.
Switches 1 and 2 of DIP-Switch S3 select which controller is used to process the touch panel signals. The different configurations are

Power Connector
The LED dimmer is connected to the I

C bus at address 0xC0 (write) and 0xC1 (read) by default. Alternatively jumper J2 allows to select
0xC2 (write) and 0xC3 (read).
In order to make 12V available for backlight, jumper JP2 must be closed.
Caution:
There is no protective circuitry for the 12V of the backlight! Close jumper JP2 only if the power supply connected to X28 of the phyBASE will not deliver more than 12V!

Mounting to the phyBASE
An integral hinge is used in order to join baseboard and display adapter together mechanically. It is part of the display adapter and already mounted on it with two screws and an aluminum slat.
Fastening the integral hinge to the baseboard will be done the same way. Therefore PHYTEC ships the display adapter together with a separate aluminum slat and the baseboard comes with the needed screws. To be able to fold display adapter and baseboard together and to put this kit on a table in a stable manner, four plastic spacer bolts, four rubber plugs and two nuts also belong to the baseboard.
Figure 8: Preparing Baseboard and Display Adapter
Do the following steps:
•
•
Lay down the aluminum slat on the table.
Put the display adapter beside it so that the holes of its integral hinge match the holes of the aluminum slat.
•
Position the baseboard so that its corresponding two holes also match and that its corresponding border will be flush with the
aluminum slat as shown in Figure 8. It might be necessary to
flip the aluminum slat in order to achieve this.
