INTRODUCTION

The MC-329I is a compact micro system with built-in CD player, FM radio, iPod dock and connectivity for flash storage memory. In addition to volume and source selection, the remote control (supplied) controls transport functions for the CD player and replay from an iPod or connected flash memory store.

PRELIMINARIES

UNPACKING

Carefully unpack the unit. If it is damaged, please return it to your nearest Tesco store for replacement. Remember to take your purchase receipt with you.

Retain the User Handbook. If you pass the unit on to a third party make sure you pass on the handbook.

We suggest you retain the packaging. If you dispose of it, do so having regard to any recycling regulations in your area.

PREPARATION FOR USE

PLACEMENT

Placement on a table or shelf:

Place the unit on a sturdy table or shelf where it cannot get knocked over and where there is a clear line of sight to the remote handset.

Make sure that there is a clearance of 10cm (4 inches) around the unit for ventilation. There should also be a clearance of

32cm above the surface the unit stands on to allow the CD loading door to open fully.

Optional wall-mounting:

The MC-329I system has back panel fixings for optional wallmounting of the speakers and/or the main system.

If you plan to wall-mount the speakers or system, you will need to fix one screw into the wall to hang each speaker and a further two if wall-mounting the main system.

Before fixing the screws, plan the location carefully, ensuring that mains power is accessible, that there is a clearance of

125mm above the unit to allow the CD door to open fully and ensuring that the speaker cables will be long enough to connect to the jacks on the right-hand side of the unit.

Once you have planned the location, you will need to fix two screws into the wall to support the main unit, spaced by

182mm. Check that the screws will be level and that the unit will be fixed at the height you require.

A further two screws will then be necessary, one to wallmount each speaker.

NOTE:- Most walls will require the use of wall-plugs when mounting the fixing screws. If you are in any doubt concerning the type of fixing required or the security of wallmountings, consult a building professional.

The wall fixings used must be suitable for the type of wall

(materials, thickness, condition), so that the maximum load bearing of the wall can be guaranteed.

Ensure that no electrical cables, water pipes or gas pipes are located within the wall.

Before mounting, check the location of the nearest mains socket. Use a spirit level when attaching the wall bracket.

Wear safety g oggles when drilling.

Keep small parts out of reach from children.

Placing the speakers:

Unwrap the speaker wires from the ties securing them.

Place a speaker on either side of the main unit, preferably at the same height, and with at least 150mm between each speaker and the main unit.

Connecting the speakers:

The speakers are equipped with RCA phono plugs for easy connection. Referring to the diagram below -

REMOTE CONTROL REMOTE CONTROL BATTERIES

BEFORE FIRST USE

To prepare the remote control for first use, pull out the safety strip to activate the battery.

BATTERY DISPOSAL

Dispose of used batteries with regard to the recycling regulations in your area. Do NOT short circuit batteries or throw them into water, the general rubbish or in a fire.

Weak batteries can leak and damage the remote control.

Replace them in good time!

REPLACING THE BATTERY

When replacing the battery in the remote control, refer to the diagram below.

1. Slide off the battery cover.

2. Remove the battery. Replace the battery, observing polarity as shown. Use only the same CR2032 type specified.

GETTING STARTED

FM RADIO AERIAL

Before using your unit for FM reception, unwrap and fully extend the aerial wire. In use, you may need to adjust the position of the aerial wire for maximum signal strength.

CONNECTING POWER

• Check that the mains voltage marked on the rating plate on the back panel is the same as the voltage in your area.

•

Plug the mains plug into the wall socket and switch the mains power on at the wall.

Switch on the main power switch, located on the rear panel of the unit.

The unit will switch on, set to Standby, and the display will light.

POWER CONTROL

• To switch the unit on, press the STANDBY/ON button or the button on the remote control.

The unit will switch on and the display will brighten.

• To switch the unit off, press the STANDBY/ON button or the button on the remote control.

The unit will switch off and the display will dim.

Auto-standby

If the unit is switched on, but not playing and with no user operation (for example, if a CD has stopped playing) for 15 minutes, it will automatically set to Standby .

Display brightness

Pressing any button on the font panel or remote control

(except STANDBY/ON) while the unit is set to Standby will brighten the display momentarily (to read the clock).

SETTING THE CLOCK

The clock is set when the unit is set to Standby.

To set the clock:

• Press and hold the MEM/C-ADJ button.

HOUR will be displayed, with 12 or 24 flashing.

• Press the { or } button to select your preference of 12

• or 24 hour clock display.

Press the MEM/C-ADJ button to confirm this setting.

The hours digits on the display will now flash.

DISPLAYING THE CLOCK

The clock is displayed when the unit set to Standby.

• To display the clock at any other time, press and hold the

MEM/C-ADJ button.

The display will change to ‘clock’ for a few seconds.

SELECTING A FUNCTION

You can choose from the following functions:

• Play music from a docked iPod.

• Play from an external source connected to the AUX (Line) input.

Play FM radio (TUNER).

CD or MP3 disc playback.

Play music files from a USB drive.

Play music files from a Flash card.

To change the function:

Press the FUNCTION button repeatedly to scroll through the function options listed above.

ADJUSTING THE VOLUME

To increase the volume:

• Press the VOLUME + button.

To decrease the volume:

• Press the VOLUME - button.

To mute the volume:

• Press the MUTE button on the remote control.

The sound from the speakers will be muted.

To unmute the volume:

• Press the MUTE button on the remote control.

The sound from the speakers will return to the last volume level set.

PLAYING A CD OR MP3/WMA DISC

You can load and play music CDs or MP3/WMA encoded compilation discs and navigate the disc using the buttons on the remote control or the front panel.

Selecting CD, or MP3/WMA disc operation:

• Press the FUNCTION button repeatedly until CD is displayed.

Loading a disc:

• Press the OPEN/CLOSE button.

The loading door will slide upwards.

When the door has stopped moving, you can load the disc onto the turntable.

• Holding the disc by the edges, load it over the turntable in the centre of the disc compartment and press the disc lightly onto the turntable.

The disc will be retained on the turntable.

• Press the OPEN/CLOSE button to close the loading door.

The unit will read the disc and display the total number of tracks on a CD, or total tracks and folders on an MP3/WMA disc.

Removing a disc:

• Make sure that the disc is stopped.

•

Open the CD loading door by pressing OPEN/CLOSE button.

Holding the disc by the edges, lift it off the turntable and place it back in the case.

Press the OPEN/CLOSE button to close the loading door.

Playing a CD or MP3/WMA disc:

• Press the / /, button.

The disc will begin to play. For CD the display will show the track number playing and the track elapsed time. For MP3/WMA discs the display will show the track number, album/folder number (if any) and the track elapsed time.

NOTE:- On an MP3/WMA disc all tracks are played and selected in one sequence, whether they are in albums/ folders or not. As the tracks change, the folder number will update as necessary.

Pausing disc playback:

• Press the / /, button while the disc is playing.

The elapsed time display will flash.

Stopping disc playback:

• Press the STOP/MENU button (or the . button on the remote control) while the disc is playing.

The disc will stop playing.

Selecting tracks:

• Press the } or { button to select the next or previous track.

Selecting folders/albums on an MP3/WMA disc:

• Press the

P

button to browse up or down the folders on an MP3/WMA disc.

Play will skip to the next or previous folder/album and the track number will change accordingly.

Fast search:

• Press and hold the } or { button to fast search forward or backward through a track.

The track will search at high speed.

ID3 title display:

• Press the ID3/MO/ST button to switch ID3 mode on or off.

‘ID3 ON’ or ‘ID3 OFF’ will be displayed.

When ID3 mode is on, the track number and time display alternates with a scrolling text display of the artist/album and track name.

NOTE: ID3 title display is only possible where ID3 data is available for the album/track being played.

REPEAT, RANDOM & INTRO

Repeat play:

• Press the REPEAT button repeatedly to step through the available repeat modes.

For CD the repeat options are -

Repeat (repeat the current track).

Repeat All (repeat the complete CD).

• Repeat off.

For MP3/WMA discs the repeat options are -

Repeat (repeat the current track).

Repeat All (repeat all tracks on the disc).

Repeat Album (repeat the current album/folder).

Repeat off.

If a repeat mode is set, the mode selected will be shown on the display.

Random play:

Random play will play the tracks on the disc in a random order.

• Press the RANDOM button to turn Random play on or off.

If Random Play is set, RANDOM will be shown on the display.

Intro play:

• Press the INTRO key to set Intro play.

The first 10 seconds of each track will now play.

• If you hear a track you like and want to return to normal play, press the INTRO button again.

PROGRAM PLAY

You can load a disc and store a programmed selection of up to

32 tracks (CD) or 64 tracks (MP3/WMA disc) to play from the disc in your preferred sequence.

To set a program (CD):

• Load a disc and wait for it to read.

• Press the MEM/C-ADJ button.

The display will change to the Program Entry display -

Track number to program Position in program

• Select the track number you want to program by pressing the } or { button.

The flashing track number digits will show the track number.

• To save this track into the program sequence, press the

MEM/C-ADJ button.

The ‘Position in program’ digits will update to show the position in the program for the next track.

• Repeat these two steps until you have stored all the tracks in the program sequence.

NOTE:- If no key is pressed within a 10 second period during the program entry sequence, program entry will be cancelled.

To set a program (MP3/WMA disc):

For MP3/WMA discs, tracks are entered into the program sequence by first entering the album number for the track required, then the track number.

Load a disc and wait for it to read.

Press the MEM/C-ADJ button.

The display will change to the Program Entry display, the album number will flash -

• Select the album number containing the track you want to program by pressing the } or { button.

• Press the MEM/C-ADJ button.

The track number digits will now flash.

Select a track number by pressing the } or { button.

To save this track into the program sequence, press the

MEM/C-ADJ button.

The ‘Position in program’ digits will update to show the position in the program for the next track.

• Repeat these steps until you have stored all the tracks in the program sequence.

NOTE:- If no key is pressed within a 10 second period during the program entry sequence, program entry will be cancelled.

Playing a program (all discs):

• Press the / /, button immediately after entering the program to start the program playing.

The program will begin to play and MEMORY will show on the display to show that a program is being played. Pause, track selection and fast search functions will work as normal within the programmed selection of tracks.

Clearing a program:

• Press the STOP button twice or open the loading door.

LISTENING TO FM RADIO

Your radio can receive FM band radio stations.

Selecting FM operation:

• Press the FUNCTION button repeatedly to select TUNER mode.

The display will switch to show ‘FM’ and the tuned frequency.

To auto-tune to FM stations

• Press and hold the } or { button to search for the next station up or down the band.

The radio will search the band and the tuning frequency will be displayed whilst searching.

When a usable station is detected the radio will stop tuning and play the station. The station frequency and audio mode will be displayed.

To manually tune to FM stations

• Press the } or { button on the control panel briefly to tune the band manually in 50kHz steps.

STEREO/MONO RECEPTION

You can set your radio to switch automatically between stereo and mono FM reception (STEREO mode) or to receive in mono only (MONO mode). Setting to Mono mode may improve sound quality in areas where a weak aerial signal results in a high level of background noise.

To switch between FM Stereo and FM Mono modes

• Press the ID3/MO./ST. button repeatedly.

The audio mode will toggle from FM Stereo to FM Mono.

RADIO PRESETS

Your system can store up to 30 of your favourite stations as presets for quick recall.

To store a preset (control panel or remote control)

Tune to the station you want to store as a preset.

Press the MEM/C-ADJ button.

The display will show ‘MEMORY’ and the preset number will flash.

button repeatedly to find the preset number you want to store.

Press the MEM/C-ADJ button to store the station in this preset location.

The station playing will be saved for future recall by this preset number.

To browse the presets

• Press the PRESET/FOLDER

As the preset number steps up or down the indicated preset will be recalled.

iPod ADAPTORS

Before docking your iPod you must first check if your iPod has a docking connector. Early iPod models do not have one and cannot be docked to your unit. The docking connector is located on the base of the iPod as shown below.

SELECTING AN ADAPTOR

If you don’t have a dock adaptor

If your iPod was not supplied with a standard dock adaptor, or if you have lost the adaptor, you can buy one from Apple on-line. To determine the exact model of your iPod, refer to this web-link - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353. You can then browse the iPod accessories page on the Apple website to find an adaptor for your iPod model that can be purchased on-line.

Docking Connector

Before docking your iPod, you must first fit the correct iPod adaptor to the docking bay. Each iPod adaptor matches the shape of a particular iPod and is necessary to ensure that your iPod is securely held when docked.

FITTING THE iPod ADAPTOR

When your iPod was new it may have been supplied with a standard dock adaptor in the packaging. If so, fit the adaptor by pressing it gently into the Docking Bay as shown above.

NOTE: Do not dock an iPod without fitting the correct adaptor, you may damage the iPod and your unit.

CONNECTING OTHER iPod

MODELS (INC SHUFFLE)

If you own an iPod Shuffle, a model without dock connector or prefer to connect your iPod by cable, you can connect the sound output to the LINE IN jack on the side panel.

Headphone socket

To the LINE IN jack

• Using the 3.5mm stereo jack to jack cable (not supplied), connect one end of the cable to the headphone socket of the iPod, and the other end to the LINE IN jack on the side panel.

• To listen to your iPod, follow the instructions under ‘Line

Input’ on page 15 for playing equipment connected to the

LINE IN jack.

NOTE:- The volume control of the iPod must be turned up when playing through the LINE IN jack.

NOTE:- An iPod connected to the LINE IN jack cannot be operated from the remote control.

Check that the correct iPod adaptor is fitted to the docking bay.

Locate the iPod on the Docking Connector and press it gently home.

Switch the unit on.

To remove your iPod from the dock:

Grip the iPod at the sides.

Lift the iPod gently from the dock.

CHARGING AN iPod

When an iPod is docked, and the unit is switched on the iPod will begin to charge automatically.

PLAYING FROM AN iPod

Once an iPod is docked, you can play music from the iPod through your system.

Playing from a docked iPod:

• Press the FUNCTION button to select iPod mode.

The display will read ‘IPOD’.

You can now operate your iPod functions from the control panel or the remote control.

iPod playback functions:

• Press the / /, button to toggle between Play and Pause

•

• mode at any time.

Press the } or { button to select the next or previous track on your iPod.

Press the STOP/MENU button (or the . button on the remote control) to stop the iPod playing.

You can also set Repeat or Shuffle modes on the iPod from the remote control.

To select repeat modes:

• Press the REPEAT button repeatedly to cycle through the repeat mode options available.

The repeat mode set will show on the iPod display.

To set shuffle mode:

• Press the RANDOM button repeatedly to switch shuffle mode on or off.

The shuffle mode symbol will show on the iPod display when set.

NAVIGATING iPod MENUS

When an iPod is docked and playing you can also navigate the menus from the control buttons on the front panel and remote control.

To navigate the iPod menus:

• Whilst playing an iPod, press the button. iPod/MEM/C-ADJ

The display indication will change between ‘IPOD’ and

‘IPODMENU’. When the display reads ‘IPOD’ , the buttons will control iPod playback functions as described above. When the display reads ‘IPODMENU’ the buttons will control the following navigation commands -

• To move up through the iPod menu, press the STOP/

MENU button (or the . button on the remote control).

• To scroll up and down options displayed on the iPod menu, press the } or { button.

• To select menu items, press the / /, button.

FLASH DRIVES AND CARDS

You can play compatible audio files stored on USB Flash drives, USB personal audio players, or Flash Cards.

To connect a USB flash drive or MP3 player:

• Set the unit to Standby.

• Insert the drive or player into the USB jack on the top panel.

• Switch the power on.

To load a Flash Card:

Set the unit to Standby.

Gently insert the Flash Card into the Flash Card slot on the top panel of the unit. If the Flash Card is marked with an arrow this should be aligned to the back of the unit.

• Switch the power on.

NOTE:- Flash Cards are polarised and can only be inserted one way round. If the Flash Card will not load easily you may need to reverse it. Never force a Flash Card into the Card Reader slot.

PLAYING FROM FLASH MEDIA

To play the music stored on your Flash Card or Drive:

• Load your Flash Card or Drive.

• Press the FUNCTION button repeatedly to choose playback from a USB drive or Flash Card.

The display will read ‘USB’ if you select USB drive playback or

‘CARD’ for Flash Card playback.

After a short delay, the content of the selected media will be read and displayed on the Flash Media playback display -

Playback control:

• Press the / /, button.

The files will begin to play. The display will show the track number, album/folder number (if any) and the track elapsed time.

Play will skip to the next or previous folder/album and the track number will change accordingly.

Fast search:

• Press and hold the } or { button to fast search forward or backward through a track.

The track will search at high speed.

ID3 title display:

• Press the ID3/MO/ST button to switch ID3 mode on or off.

‘ID3ON’ or ‘ID3 OFF’ will be displayed.

When ID3 mode is on, the track number and time display alternates with a scrolling text display of the artist/album and track name.

NOTE: ID3 title display is only possible where ID3 data is available for the album/track being played.

The Line input may be used to connect sound sources with a Line or Headphone analogue output to play through your unit. These may include -

• iPod models that cannot be docked to the unit

MP3 players

CD walkman players

Tape walkman players

Personal computers or laptops

Connecting to the LINE IN jack

• Connect a stereo 3.5mm jack cable (not supplied) between the headphone or LINE/AUX output of the personal audio player and the LINE IN jack on the side panel.

Playing the LINE IN source

• Press the FUNCTION button repeatedly to select AUX mode.

AUX MODE will be displayed.

Set your personal audio player/computer to PLAY.

Set the listening volume to the level you want with the volume controls on the radio or remote control.

If there is no sound or if the volume level is not loud enough, you may need to increase the volume setting on your personal audio player/computer.

TIMER AND SLEEP TIMER OPERATION

The system includes a timer to switch it on and off at preset times. The timer is set when in Standby.

To set the timer:

Set the unit to Standby mode.

Press and hold the TIMER button.

The display will indicate ‘ ON’ and the hours digits will flash

(AM or PM will also be displayed if the clock is set to 12 hour mode).

• Press the } or { button to set the hours digits to the correct number for the timer to switch on.

• Press the TIMER button to confirm this setting.

The minutes digits on the display will now flash.

• Press the } or { button to set the minutes digits to the correct number for the timer to switch on.

• Press the TIMER button to confirm this setting.

TUNER will now appear on the display. This is the source that will play when the timer functions.

• Press the } or { button if you want to select a different source for timer operation.

• Press the TIMER button to confirm this setting.

VOL will now appear on the display with the volume level. This is the volume level that will be set when the timer functions.

• Press the } or { button if you want to select a different

• volume setting.

Press the TIMER button to confirm this setting.

• All timer settings will now be reviewed on the display and the timer will set.

To switch the timer on or off:

Press the TIMER button briefly.

The symbol will show on the display when the timer is active. As the timer switches on, the current timer settings will be reviewed on the display.

SLEEP TIMER

You can set the Sleep timer to play music for a set period while you are falling asleep.

To set the sleep timer:

• Play your choice of music.

• Press the SLEEP button on the remote control repeatedly to step down from a the sleep time of 90 minutes in 10 minute intervals. The minimum sleep time you can set is

10 minutes. Pressing the SLEEP button one more time will cancel the sleep timer.

The sleep symbol will appear on the display and the music will continue to play for the time you selected. When the sleep time expires, the unit will set to Standby.

To check the sleep time remaining:

• Press the SLEEP button while sleep is set.

• The sleep time remaining will be displayed.

EQUALISATION

You can change the equalisation of the sound or boost the level of bass from your radio to suit your taste.

To select an EQ response:

• Press the EQ button repeatedly to cycle through the

Sound equalisation options optimised as shown below.

As each setting is selected, the sound EQ will change.

HEADPHONES

There is a headphone output socket on the side panel of the unit. If headphones are connected to this socket for private listening, the speakers will cut out automatically.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Poor quality radio reception

Try changing the position of the aerial wire.

No playback from a Flash Drive or Card

Check the memory size of the card. If it is over 2GB it will not be compatible with your unit.

Check that the files on the drive are compatible - MP3 or

WMA encoded.

NOTE: Protected WMA files cannot be played.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE

CARE AND CLEANING

All care and cleaning operations should be carried out with the unit unplugged from the mains power.

The surface of the unit can be cleaned with a barely damp cloth and then dried carefully. Never use abrasives, abrasive cloths or chemical solvents .

Loudspeaker grilles can be cleaned carefully with a soft brush.
