Connecting for Internet Access
This notice describes how to set up the Contivity 1010/1050/1100 at your branch office site for basic
Internet access through your cable or DSL modem. The Contivity 1010/1050/1100 supports these
Web browsers: Internet Explorer 5.5 or 6.0 and Netscape 4.7.x or 6.2.
One each of the following items is shipped with your Contivity 1010/1050/1100:

Power cord
AC to DC external power supply
Molded serial cable RJ45 to DB9
Ethernet crossover cable (Contivity 1010 only)
Contivity CD (contains documentation)
To set up your Contivity 1010, 1050, or 1100:

Plug the power cord into the external power supply shipped with the switch.

Plug the power cord into an AC power outlet.

Plug the external power supply into the port on the back of the switch labeled DC Input.

Turn on the power switch.

Connect your cable or DSL modem to the LAN 1 (public) port located on the front panel of the
switch using a standard Ethernet cable (not included with the Contivity switch).
If your DSL or cable modem has not yet been installed, contact your Internet service provider
(ISP). Your ISP may need the LAN 1 MAC address located on the back of your switch.

To connect more than one PC or other devices to the Contivity 1050 or 1100, use standard
Ethernet cables to connect the devices to the LAN 0 (private) ports labeled A–D that are
located on the front panel of the switch.
To connect a PC directly to the Contivity 1010, use the Ethernet crossover cable that was
shipped with it. To connect more than one PC to the Contivity 1010, connect an Ethernet
switch or hub to the LAN 0 port and then connect the PCs to the switch or hub.
By default, the DHCP server is enabled on the LAN 0 port of the Contivity 1010/1050/1100. To
use DHCP, you must configure your PCs to accept IP addresses that the DHCP server will assign
to the LAN 0 ports. For Microsoft* Windows* operating systems:

Go to the Control Panel and click on the network connections icon.

Select TCP/IP protocol, click on the Properties button, and then select the “Obtain an IP
address automatically” option.

Reboot your PC to obtain a new IP address from the switch (192.168.1.3–192.168.1.254).

Determine the type of addressing that your ISP uses:

If your ISP uses DHCP, you need only launch your Web browser to verify connectivity to the
Internet. By default, the LAN 1 port on the switch acts as a DHCP client and receives an IP
address from the public side.
If your ISP uses Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE), you also automatically
receive an IP address, but you must use the Web-based management utility for advanced
configuration options to enable PPPoE.
a Open your Web browser and enter http://192.168.1.2.
b Click on Manage Switch and enter admin and setup as the user name and password.
c From the menu bar, choose System > LAN to display the LAN Interfaces screen.
d From the Select Protocol list, choose PPPoE and click on Apply.
The Add PPPoE Interface screen appears.
e Set the Administrative State option to Enabled.
f From the Interface Filter list, choose permit all.
g Click on OK.
h Go to an external Web site to verify Internet access.

If your ISP uses static IP addressing, you must contact the ISP for the address to use and
then use the Web-based management utility for advanced configuration options to enable it.
a Open your Web browser and enter http://192.168.1.2.
b Click on Manage Switch and enter admin and setup as the user name and password.
c From the menu bar, choose System > LAN to display the LAN Interfaces screen.
d From the Select Protocol list, choose IP and click on Apply.
The Add PPPoE Interface screen appears.
e Select the Static option and type the IP address and subnet mask that the ISP provided.
f Click on OK.
g Go to an external Web site to verify Internet access.
