IMPORTANT SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
Harmful substances may be in the form of dusts, mists, fumes, gases and
vapours, or combinations of these substances. There are many important
factors to be considered before choosing which respirator is most suitable
for an application:
> Ensure there is sufficient oxygen present.
Please refer to standards or regulations
for concentration level details.
> Determine the physical and chemical
properties of the contaminant, which
can be ascertained from the most current
Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for
the substance concerned, or from other
appropriate reference material.
> Determine the concentration of the
contaminant in your workplace
environment. Lower capacity respirators
are only designed to work in
concentrations up to a certain level and
you may need to use a different respirator
depending on the concentration present.
> Assess the working conditions and
respirator protection factor. P1 respirators
are for protection against mechanicallygenerated particulates. P2 respirators are
for protection against mechanically and
thermally-generated particulates. Class
P3 respirators are intended for use
against all particulates including highly
toxic materials.
> Other filter types or types of respirators
are to be considered for protection from
gases and vapours. The type of
contaminant and concentration will
determine which filter/respirator is
required. You need to know the work
place exposure standard for the
contaminant, e.g. ‘Worksafe Australia
Exposure Standards for atmospheric
contaminants in the occupational
environment’ or ‘OSH Workplace
Exposure Standards and Biological

> Select the right respirator / filter for
the task, and ensure a proper face
fit. Where concentrations permit,
disposable respirators are a good
solution and are more likely to be
worn because of their greater comfort.
If you use replaceable filter respirators,
you must implement a respirator
maintenance program in accordance
with AS/NZS 1716:2003.

CHOOSING THE CORRECT RESPIRATOR
Choosing the right respirator involves four main steps:
1 Determine the type of hazard 2 Determine if the hazard presents an immediate
danger to life and health 3 Determine the type of contaminant 4 Select the
appropriate respirator based on concentration levels of the contaminant
When selecting a respirator, users should
consider the chemical and physical properties
of the contaminant, as well as the toxicity and
concentration of the hazardous material and
the amount of oxygen present.
Air-purifying respirators use filters or
sorbents to remove harmful substances from
the air. They range from simple disposable
masks to sophisticated devices. They do not
supply oxygen and must not be used in
oxygen-deficient atmospheres or in other
atmospheres which present an IDLH.
Supplied Air Respirators provide breathable
air from a clean air source other than the
surrounding contaminated work area.

DISPOSABLE [MAINTENANCEFREE] RESPIRATORS
A maintenance-free or disposable
respirator is a breathing device
designed to be discarded after use.
There are no spare parts and
therefore no maintenance
is required.
There are two classes of particulate filters
suitable for filtering finely divided solid or
liquid particles, or both, from inhaled air
with disposable respirators. These are
classified in accordance with the tests in
AS/NZS 1716:2003, as follows:

For use against mechanically
generated particulates
The Sperian range of maintenance
free disposable respirators was developed
in Europe in response to Standard, EN
149:2001. This new EN standard has led to
an improved Sperian range of disposable
respirators globally. Sperian respirators
protect the wearer against solid, water
based and liquid aerosols.
Some highly unique features make
the Sperian maintenance free respirators
some of the most comfortable on the
market today.
After all, the best-performing
respirator in the world isn’t effective
if it’s not worn due to comfort factors. Our
goal is 100% wear time.

RE-USEABLE RESPIRATORS
A reusable respirator is a device,
incorporating a half face piece,
full face piece or head covering.
It has filters which remove finely
divided solids or liquid matter
(particulates) or gases and vapours
from the air which could be inhaled
by the wearer. The filter medium
is replaceable.
There are three classes of particulate filters
suitable for filtering finely divided solid or
liquid particles, or both, from inhaled air.
These are classified in accordance with the
tests in AZ/NZS 1716, P1, P2 and P3.
For non-powered respirators, a class P3
respirator classification can only be
assigned where a class P3 filter is combined
with a full face piece to ensure that the
effectiveness of the facial seal is more
compatible with that of the filter.
Re-usable respirators can also be combined
with filters to protect against contaminants
such as organic vapours, acid gases,
sulphur dioxide and ammonia.

1 Sperian no maintenance masks have an
increased inner volume for a non-oppressive

speech. The respirator material can be easily
molded to suit each individual’s facial

IMPROVED EXHALATION VALVE
2 With an innovative design exclusive to
Sperian, the exhalation valve on the Sperian

4 The Willtech® seal uses triple layer

QUALITY MATERIALS PROTECT
YOU AND THE ENVIRONMENT
5 Sperian disposable respirators use
premium quality materials designed to
protect you and the environment. The flame
retardant outer shell ensures greater safety.
Masks with charcoal layers provide relief from
nuisance levels of organic vapours and acid
gases. The respirator strap staples do not
penetrate the filter medium, ensuring the
integrity of the filter for your safety.
The 4000 and 5000 series also eliminate three
problem materials. Made without the use of
latex, Sperian has removed a common source
of allergies. Ecologically friendly, the 4000
and 5000 series are PVC free, and to ensure
wider use in industry, the Sperian respirators
are also totally free of silicone.
VERSATILE FLAT-FOLD STYLE
Individually wrapped, flat-fold styles are
available (4000 Series), for convenient and
hygienic storage in a pocket. A fold-and-hold
mechanism prevents contamination between
uses and offers easy storage. The integrated
chin piece design improves fit and allows
better speaking movement. The sliding latexfree elastic ring head band gives greater
adjustment and is highly resistant to
breakage. Flatfold disposable respirators have
no staples, making them ideal for use in the
food industry.
DOLOMITE TESTED
All Sperian 4000 and 5000 series respirators
have undergone optional dolomite testing,
clearly demonstrating resistance to clogging.
This ensures better breathing comfort and
less worker fatigue.

The user presses a button 1 on the battery

pack which is worn on the waistbelt
This activates the blower unit 2 which draws
air through a filter 3, delivering cool clean
air into the respirator face piece 4.
Air is compressed outside of the hazard
area 1 and is channelled to a coalescing
filter 2 to be cleaned.
From the filter 2, the air passes to the
respirator waistbelt 3, where it is
regulated to a constant flow. Air then
reaches the facepiece 4 to provide the
operator with breathable quality air.
Note: The compressor is not provided.
APR
AIRVISOR
Air is compressed outside of the hazard
area 1 and is channelled to a coalescing
filter 2 to be cleaned.
Air Purifying Respirator
Air is channelled through the filters 1
connected to the respirator. The air is
drawn through filters manually via the
wearers breathing.
From the filter 2, the air passes to the
respirator waistbelt 3, where it is
regulated to a constant flow. Air then
reaches the visor 4 to provide the
operator with breathable quality air.
It also supplies air to the air tool 5.

FITTING INSTRUCTIONS
CUP RESPIRATORS
1 Hold the respirator cup in your hand,
allowing the head-straps to hang freely.
2 Hold the respirator under the chin with the
nose-piece facing outwards. Place the respirator
in position on your face ensuring that the lower
part of the respirator is positioned under your
chin. Pull the lower head-strap over your head
and place it around the neck below the ears.
Still holding the respirator against the face with
one hand, pull the top head-strap over your
head and position it above the ears, around the
crown of the head.
Respirators with adjustable head-straps only:
adjust the tension by pulling the head-straps
with both hands. (Tension may be decreased by
pushing out on the back of the buckle).

2 Pre-form the nose-bridge.
3 Place the respirator under the chin with
the chin-flap fully open. Holding the respirator
against the face, place the lower head-strap
around the neck below the ears and the top
head-strap above the ears.

3 Mold the nose area to the shape of the face,
running the finger tips of both hands from the
top of the nose-piece down both sides while
pressing inward. Always use both hands.
4 Fit check the face seal as follows: Place both
hands over the respirator. If the respirator is not
fitted with an exhalation valve, exhale sharply; if
the respirator is fitted with an exhalation valve,
inhale sharply. If leaks around the edge are
detected, re-adjust the head-straps and/or the
nosepiece. Repeat until a satisfactory face fit
has been achieved. Important: If you feel that
the headbands are too loose, increase the
tension by tying a small knot in the headband.
WARNING: In any circumstance, if you cannot achieve
a satisfactory fit, do NOT enter the contaminated area.
FOLDING RESPIRATORS
1 Open Flat Fold Respirator by pushing slightly

Repeat the procedure until a satisfactory face
fit has been achieved. Important: If you feel
that the headbands are too loose, you can
increase the tension by tying a small knot
in the headband.
WARNING: In any circumstance, if you cannot achieve
a satisfactory fit, do NOT enter the contaminated area.
4 This is how the respirator should look when
correctly donned.
5 Mold the nose area to the shape of the face
by pinching the nose-bridge from the top to the
bottom. Make sure that the chin-flap is open
and secure around the chin area.
6 Fit Check: Fit check the face seal as follows:
Place both hands over the respirator. If the
respirator is not fitted with an exhalation valve,
exhale sharply; if the respirator is fitted with
an exhalation valve, inhale sharply. If leaks
around the edge are detected, re-adjust the
head-straps and/or the nose-piece.
RE-USEABLE RESPIRATORS
1 Loosen the elastic band without completely
pulling the band out of the slots in the
crown suspension.
2 Pull gently on the lower neck strap, creating
a large loop. Put lower neck strap loop over
the head.
3 Place the respirator to the face, covering
the mouth and nose. (The narrow part of the
facepiece should be over the nose.) Pull the
crown suspension over the head and adjust
its placement until it is comfortable.
4 Using both hands, grasp the free ends of the
elastic band and gently pull the elastic straps
away from your face until the respirator is snug
and seated comfortably. Be sure the neckstrap
is flat and smooth against the back of the neck.
To tighten the neckstrap, make intermediate
adjustments at the straps as they exit the top
slots on the yoke. Gently pull the free ends to
make final adjustments and secure a
comfortable fit of the respirator to your face.

Selection of the appropriate filter
cartridge and filter combination is
dependent on a number of factors,
including the type of contaminant, the
level of exposure, and the length of
exposure. Therefore, this information is
presented as an overview only. Class P3
can only be assigned when combined
with a full facepiece.
FILTER LIFE EXPECTANCY
It is difficult to give an exact life
expectancy on a filter cartridge for a
respirator. This is because the filter life
depends on a number of variable factors
including the wearers breathing rate, the

characteristics and level of the
contaminant, the length of time a user
is exposed to a contaminant and
environmental conditions such as
temperature and humidity which could
also effect the wearers breathing rate.
Saturated or used filter cartridges will
leak trace amounts of contaminants to
the wearer, which may be detected via
odour, taste, and/or irritation – If a
contaminant can be detected by any
of these means by a user, then
filter cartridges should be
changed immediately.

IMPORTANT SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
Since gas detectors are used as a warning of hazards in confined
environments, it is crucial to consider the factors listed below to
ensure worker safety.
Gas detectors are predominately used in
confined spaces to protect workers from
potential hazards which may exist in the
atmosphere. A confined space can be
described as an area or enclosure that has
limited openings for entry and exit, is not
intended for continuous human occupancy,
and can represent a risk for the health and
safety of anyone who enters, due to one or
more of the following factors:
When selecting an appropriate gas detector
for your application you should take into
account the following safety considerations:
> Ensure the gas detector you are using is
designed to detect the contaminant/s which
pose a possible danger in your work
environment
> Ensure you “bump” test or calibrate your
gas detector before use

SENSOR RELIABILITY AND ACCURACY
Today’s sensors are designed to
provide years of reliable service.
In fact, many sensors are designed
so that with normal use they will
only lose 5% of their sensitivity per
year or 10% over a two year period.
Given this, it should be possible
to use a sensor for up to two full
years without any significant loss
of sensitivity.
There are a number of reasons why a sensor
may unexpectedly lose sensitivity or even
fail to respond to gas. Such reasons include
desiccation, poisoning, physical restriction
of airflow, overexposure, leakage, and
mechanical damage due to dropping
or immersion.
ONE BUTTON AUTO CALIBRATION
While it is only necessary to do a “bump”
test to ensure that the sensors are
working properly, all current Sperian
gas detectors offer a one button auto
calibration feature. This feature allows
you to calibrate a Sperian gas detector in
about the same time as it takes to complete
a “bump” test. The use of automatic bump
test and docking stations can further
simplify the tasks, while automatically
maintaining records.
VERIFICATION OF ACCURACY
Dependable sensors can be the key to survival
in a hazardous environment; frequent
verification of sensor performance is
paramount. There is only one sure way to
verify that a sensor can respond to the gas for
which it is designed – to expose it to a known
concentration of target gas and compare the
reading with the concentration of the gas.
This is referred to as a “bump” test. This test
is very simple and takes only a few seconds
to accomplish.
The safest course of action is to do a “bump”
test prior to each day’s use. It is not necessary
to make a calibration adjustment if the
readings are between 90% and 120% of
the expected value.

GAS DETECTORS EXPLAINED
A Gas Detector is designed to protect personnel from unseen hazards that
may exist in workplace environments, including confined spaces.
Gas detectors are available which detect
single hazards or multiple hazards
simultaneously. The types of hazards detected
include: toxic gases, combustible gases,
oxygen and carbon monoxide.
Gas detectors work by measuring the
concentration of a gas in an air sample by
comparing the sensor's response to a
calibration gas of a known concentration. The
instrument's response to the calibration gas
serves as the measurement scale or reference
point. If the detectors response exceeds one
of the pre set alarm levels, the alarm will be
activated to warn the user.

configurable to monitor a wide
variety of toxic hazards.
The Cannonball 3 was designed to handle the worst that mother
nature can dish out while delivering the highest level of safety
and reliability that you've come to expect from Sperian.
The Cannonball 3 includes a sealed case coupled with an
oversized, scratch-resistant, self-healing display. The optional
high sensitivity HC-PPM LEL provides broad range monitoring
at PPM levels for nearly all toxic and combustible gases and
vapours. The gas sample is drawn into the Cannonball 3's
internal sensor chamber by a field-replaceable internal
pump module.
The Cannonball 3 can be equipped with a dilution pump
module, allowing for monitoring of combustible gases and
vapours in oxygen-deficient or inert atmospheres without a
dilution orifice or labour-intensive manual calculations.
Applications:
Cannonball3 can be configured to detect oxygen, combustible
gases and a wide variety of toxic hazards
