1 The GSM Ground Station
The GSM ground station is the communication counterpart of your GSM collars. It is a
modem that receives the incoming SMS from the collars and transfers them to the computer.
It also sends your commands to the collars. All you need to get it to work is a SIM card and
an USB extension cable (optional, but more convenient).

2 Set-up
Ideally, the GSM station will be connected to one specific computer for the entire project;
otherwise it is necessary to migrate SMS transmitted data between computers.
2.1 Plug in the SIM card
Carefully push the SIM card into the slot in the orientation shown on the schematic on top of
the GSM station. The SIM card’s chip needs to face away from you. Push until the SIM card
is entirely inside the GSM station (there might be a faint clacking noise). If the SIM card has
not been inserted deep enough, it will be pushed out again. It might be necessary to use your
fingernail to push it completely inside. To remove the SIM card, press the SIM card again and
it will come out immediately.

2.2 Connect the GSM ground station to a PC
To connect the GSM Station to a PC, you can simply plug it into any USB port. We suggest
to use a USB extension cable, because it will allow you to position the GSM station in a more
convenient way. Make sure that the GSM station is in a place with GSM coverage!
If your Computer/ Hub can’t provide current for the GSM-2 station, please use the enclosed
Y-USB power cable. Plug in both USB A male connectors in your Computer/ Hub and plug
in the USB A female connector to your GSM-2 Station or its USB extension cable.

If your Computer / Hub can’t still provide enough current for the GSM-2 station, please use
the enclosed Y-USB Cable power cable with the external USB wall Changer and the USB
extension cable. Plug in the single cable USB A male to the USB wall charger and the two
cable USB A male connector to your USB extension cord. Plug in the other side of the
extension cable into your Computer/ Hub and plug in the USB A female connector of the
Y-USB Cable to your GSM-2 Station. The extension cable here is very important, because if
the GSM-2 Station drains higher power, the voltage drop off the extension cable avoid
draining more current from the USB Port of your computer. The GSM-2 Station will therefore
drain more current from the USB wall charger, because of the shorter low impedance cable.

2.3 Install drivers
If you plug in the GSM station for the first time, MS Windows will automatically search for
drivers, but will not be able to find the correct ones. Instead, you need to install them
manually. The drivers can be found on the VECTRONIC Aerospace CD which is delivered
with the GSM station:
1. Tools and Drivers USB Drivers USB Drivers for GSM-2 Ground Station,
2. or directly on the CD in the folder Resources\VECTRONIC Tools and Drivers\USB

2.3.1
Manual Installation of drivers in Windows

Insert the VECTRONIC CD into your PC and connect the GSM
station to your PC.

Your PC will automatically try to install the device and the Found New
Hardware Wizard will open:

Select No, not this time and click on Next.

5. Select Search removeable media. Go to the VECTRONIC CD and select the folder “USB
Drivers\USB Drivers for GSM-2 Ground Station”.

Select Continue anyway. The driver will now be installed. Your PC will
now repeat steps 2 to 8 to install the Com Port for the GSM station. Afterwards, you can
configure the GSM station with GPS Plus.

Manual Installation of drivers in Windows Vista / Windows 7

Insert the VECTRONIC CD into your PC.
Connect the GSM station to your PC. Your PC will automatically try
to install the device.
A warning will appear reporting that the device was not installed correctly. Open the Device
Manager: Go to Start

Browse on the VECTRONIC CD for the folder USB Drivers\USB
Drivers for GSM-2 Ground Station and click Next.

Windows will warn you that it cannot verify the publisher of this
driver software. Click on Install this driver software anyway. Windows will now install
the driver software.
8.
After the driver has been installed successfully, return to the Device
Manager and the node Other Devices and double-click on USB Serial Port. Repeat
steps 5 to 8. Now the GSM ground station will be shown in the list with a virtual Com
Port and can be configured with the GPS Plus software.
3 Configuration with GPS Plus
Note: Make sure the GSM station is connected to the computer before you start GPS Plus.
Otherwise GPS Plus will not be able to find the Com Port of the GSM station.
Note: Do not disconnect the GSM station from the computer while GPS Plus is running,
because the software might crash.
To configure the GSM station, start GPS Plus and select the GSM Base Mode. Select the
correct Com Port and go to Commands Set PIN…. Type in the PIN number for the SIM card
and press OK (Figure 13).

4 SMS Reception
On their way from the collar to your desktop, the SMS are transmitted in three steps:
1. The collar will attempt to send the SMS only when it has stored the number of GPS
locations determined in "GSM Mode", which means GPS locations per SMS. The
number of locations can be set to a maximum of seven. In this case, the collar will take
seven GPS locations, then switch on its GSM modem and attempt to send an SMS.
Afterwards it will listen to incoming SMS (e.g. new schedules). If the collar has not been
able to send an SMS (e.g. due to lack of GSM coverage), it will make a new attempt after
another seven GPS positions and send two SMS.
2. The SMS is sent from the collar to the server of the mobile provider and then forwarded
to your GSM station. If the GSM station is offline (e.g. no power or no GSM reception),
the SMS will be stored until your GSM station books itself into the mobile net again.
Depending on the mobile provider’s storage-time, an SMS will be deleted after a few
days if the receiver is not online.
3. Your GSM station can store up to 310 SMS in its internal memory. As long as it is
powered and has free memory, it will download and store SMS from the mobile provider,
even if GPS Plus is not running. Depending on your computer, the GSM station is only
powered while the computer is switched on or might be supplied with power even if the
computer is switched off.
4. SMS are downloaded from the GSM station to your computer with the GPS Plus
software. This is done with GPS
Get GPS Messages…(Figure 15). With Read SMS, all
SMS currently stored on the GSM station will be downloaded and then GPS Plus will
stop checking for new SMS. With Autoread SMS, GPS Plus will download SMS until you
press Stop; downloaded SMS will be automatically deleted from the GSM station. GPS
Plus will not react to any other commands during the autoread process, but you are able
to work with other software on this computer.
Note: Mobile phone providers delete SMS from their server after a certain time span if they
have not been downloaded by the intended receiver. How long an SMS is stored depends on
the provider. It is therefore advisable to read SMS frequently, maybe daily, to avoid data loss.

5 SMS Handling
With File
SMS.
Options
SMS Handling,
you can automatically process and export the incoming
Merge SMS messages automatically:
Enabling this option will merge any collar SMS message
received by GSM (regardless if it has been received in autoread mode or not) with all other
SMS messages of the same collar stored as a file to an automatically created file. The file
name will be “GSMxxxxx.GDF” where xxxxx is the collar ID. All SMS message files
stored in the SMS directory of this collar will be merged and their data sorted
chronologically. The resulting file will be stored in the GPS Data directory based on the
base data path (see Misc tab sheet).
Export data automatically:
This option can only be activated if the proceeding merge option is
enabled. The file resulting from the merge option will be exported to a file (name and path
are the same as the merged file, only the extension changes) containing an ASCII table, a
Spreadsheet file, or a database table in DBase format depending on the selection made in
Export Format. To configure the export options, see Export Tab Sheet below.
Export Format:
This option can only be activated if the proceeding merge option is enabled. It
defines which export format is used, if the Export data automatically option is selected.
