for enterprise and carrier networks,
while also allowing for future network
expansion.
The Tolly Group selected two models
- Switch S7903E and Switch S7906E
- from the Switch S7900E Family for
testing and verified more than 80
Layer 2 and Layer 3 functions, routing protocols, security, Quality of
Service, system management, multicast, and reliability of services.
Test Highlights
Achieves Layer 2 and 3 wire-speed throughput across 96 Gigabit
Ethernet or four 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports

Premise: With the growth of demanding
applications in current network
infrastructures, it is crucial for network
devices to offer high performance,
a mix of network functionality, QoS, and
strong security. Enterprise switches
have to accommodate those demands
while supporting new technologies such
as IPv6, MPLS, IPv6 multicast and high
availability functions.
The Switch S7900E Family achieved
Layer 2/3 IPv4/6 wire-speed throughput across four 10 Gigabit Ethernet
(10GbE) or 96 GbE ports for all the
frame/packet sizes tested.
Tests were conducted in August 2007.

Layer 2/3 IPv4 and IPv6 bidirectional throughput in a fullmesh configuration by using
Spirent SmartBits test tools.
The test tool reported that the
Switch S7900E Family was
able to deliver wire speed for
Layer 2, Layer 3 IPv4 performance across four 10GbE ports
for the frame/packet sizes

The Switch S7900E Family exhibited low latency for Layer 2,

Test bed setup &
methodology
The Tolly Group tested a Switch
S7900E Family switch using
model Switch S7903E and Switch
S7906E, software version 5.20.
For the testing, engineers utilized
a Spirent SmartBits 6000C and
IXIA 1600T traffic generator and
analyzer. (See Test Equipment
Summary, page 6.)
Layer 2/3 IPv4 and
IPv6 Zero-loss 10GbE
Throughput and
Latency
Engineers configured the Spirent
SmartBits 6000C to measure
throughput and latency at Layer
2/3 using IPv4 and IPv6. Engineers used a bidirectional configuration with four 10GbE ports
in a full-mesh configuration. RFC
2544 test was used to measure
64-, 78-, 256-, 512-, 1,024-,
1,280- and 1,518-byte frames/
packets. Each test was run for 60
seconds three times and the results were averaged to obtain the
final value.
Layer 2/3 IPv4 and
IPv6 Zero-loss GbE

Engineers used the same configuration as for Layer 2/3 IPv4 and
IPv6 zero-loss 10GbE throughput
and latency configurations by replacing four 10GbE ports with 96
