Introduction
These release notes describe the improvements made to the following Trimble SPS Series receivers:

•
SPS356, SPS882
With this release, all the above products can use version 5.03 firmware.
Note – To load this firmware, the firmware warranty date of the receiver must be May 2014 or later. If
necessary, contact your Trimble dealer to purchase an extended warranty.
Before you upgrade the firmware, Trimble recommends that you download and back up any files that are
on the receiver.

Upgrade procedure
To upgrade a modular GNSS receiver:
1. Check the firmware warranty date is May 2014 or later.
2. Use the instructions in the SPS Help or Getting Started Guide to connect to the receiver by
Ethernet and open the web interface in a supported web browser.
3. Download the *.TIMG file from the Trimble support website.
4. Install the firmware file as instructed on the SPS web interface.

To upgrade the SPS985/SPS985L Smart Antenna or SPS585:
1. Check the firmware warranty date is May 2014 new date or later.
2. Use the instructions in the SPS Help or Getting Started Guide to set the receiver to Access Point
(AP) mode. Make a connection to your Wi‐Fi enabled device and open the SPS web interface in a
supported web browser.

3. Download the *.TIMG file from the Trimble support website.
4. Install the firmware file as instructed on the SPS web interface.

If your Trimble receiver is supplied with additional Trimble firmware or software products, make sure
that those products are upgraded to the latest version. For more information about upgrading, refer to
the release notes for the products.

New features and changes
This section documents the new features and changes since version 4.93.
Rate Of Turn (ROT) improvements
Improved Rate of Turn (ROT) performance – Previous firmware versions reported high rate of turn
standard deviations when outputting NMEA at output rates faster than 1 Hz. This firmware version
allows a user to set the Heading receiver with Dynamics motion to Marine and the Rate of Turn over
a 10m baseline is now 0.2°/ minute.
Dynamic Settings (Kalman filter)
Receiver Dynamic Setting – You can now set the expected dynamics of the receiver by the Receiver
Configuration / Position page. The dynamic models available are:

Wi-Fi Hotspots (iPad/Android) supported
The SPS585 and SPS985 in Client mode can connect to the Internet via a nearby smartphone or
tablet that has the ‘Hotspot’ function enabled.
OmniSTAR v7.09 supported
The new v7.09 OmniSTAR library includes added support for BeiDou Geostationary satellites in the
Seastar G4 solution on the Fugro 9205 GNSS receiver, additional tuning on the G4 solution has
improved performance and accuracy.
The maximum number of satellites in a solution has been extended from 36 to 48.
Improved RF interference mitigation
This firmware release includes further mitigation of interference sources which may affect GNSS
signal reception and receiver performance. When using the SPS Modular receivers as a marine rover,
Trimble recommends the GA830 GNSS/MSK antenna to assist the mitigation of interference from
vessel transmissions.
NMEA VTG
The COG magnetic heading value in the NMEA VTG occasionally produced a negative value. This has
been fixed.
Internal 403 to 473 MHz radio issue
SPS985, SPS985L, and SPS855 models.
1. This firmware checks the firmware version of the internal radio and updates it to the current
release. For the version 5.03 receiver firmware, it will update to v1.20 403‐473 MHz radio
firmware. It does not update the radio firmware if the radio is the 410 to 470 MHz model.
2. In the rare case where the internal 403 to 473 MHz radio disappears from the web interface, then
loading version 5.03 firmware recovers the radio.
Renaming “OmniSTAR-HP” receiver option
In the Receiver Options prior to version 5.03, the option that enabled Dual frequency MSS (Mobile
Satellite Services) tracking (OmniSTAR HP/XP/G2 and RTX) was named ‘OmniSTAR‐HP’. The new name
is ‘Dual frequency MSS’ which can be seen in the Option Details in the web interface of SPS receivers
that support MSS tracking.
RTX to RTK switching improved
An issue which caused the receiver to continue using RTX corrections when valid RTK corrections
were also available has been fixed.

SPS855 can no longer be forced into Remote Monitor Mode
Prior to this firmware if you connected the RTS and CTS lines on the RS‐232 Modem 1 port, the
receiver would go to Remote Monitor mode. From version 5.03 shorting these two lines does not
cause this behavior on the SPS852/SPS855/SPS552H/SPS555H modular receivers.
Loss of battery information in the SPS855 is resolved
This firmware resolves a rare case when the SPS855 is being supplied with external DC voltage yet
the two‐line display shows [X] as the battery icon and there is a blank line in the Receiver Status web
page. In this case, the internal battery can still be charged and used normally, but the voltage
information was missing. Loading version 5.03 resolves this issue.
