Direct Installation of RWS instance of SQL Server 2014 Express

Direct Installation of RWS instance of SQL Server 2014 Express
SQL Express Upgrade Tool
Document #:
3285
Product:
CenterPoint®
This document describes how to download the SQL Express Upgrade Tool and update an existing “RWS” instance of Microsoft SQL
Server to SQL Server Express 2014 RTM. It is important to update SQL Server Express for the following reasons:
l
l
l
l
SQL Server 2014 users may see up to a 30% speed increase according to Microsoft.
To stay current with the latest Microsoft operating systems and ensure that data is secure when future operating system upgrades
occur. All Microsoft mainstream support has ended for SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008.
To stay up-to-date with the latest version that Red Wing Software will distribute in 2016 or later.
When you stay current with technology, it will be easier to upgrade to newer SQL Server versions in the future, for example
upgrading from SQL Server 2012 to SQL Server 2014 is an easier upgrade path than SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2014.
Download the SQL Express Upgrade Tool
Method 1: In-place Upgrade of Existing RWS Instance of SQL Server Express to SQL Server 2014 Express
The in-place upgrade method will recognize an existing RWS SQL Express instance and will upgrade it.
This method is a guided process that is time consuming, will leave components of the prior versions of SQL
Express on your computer, and will require computer reboots at different stages of the process. This method
will automatically update all databases attached to the RWS instance to the 2014 version. Note: This tool
will update the SQL Server Express versions that have been delivered in CenterPoint since the initial
product releases (32-bit versions of SQL Server 2005 Express SP3+ and SQL Server 2008 Express R2
SP1+).
Method 2: Direct Installation of RWS instance of SQL Server 2014 Express
The direct installation method is normally a faster way to upgrade your SQL Server Express RWS instance.
This method requires knowledge of uninstalling files and backing up/restoring CenterPoint databases. This
process will guide you through backing up your data, uninstalling the existing RWS SQL Server Express
instance installing a new one, and then restoring all of your databases
Prerequisites:
l
l
l
l
l
l
The operating system required for the RWS instance of SQL Server 2014 must be Windows® 7 or higher. The SQL Express
Upgrade Tool is not compatible with Microsoft Windows Vista or any earlier version of Windows.
Internet access is required to use the SQL Expess Upgrade Tool.
A backup must be performed for all databases (including sample databases you want to keep) prior to starting either method of
updating an existing RWS instance of SQL Server.
All CenterPoint products must be closed prior to starting either method of updating an existing RWS instance of SQL Server.
Method 1 - The in-place upgrade can be performed only on 32-bit versions of SQL Server. This is the version Red Wing Software
distributes and that gets automatically installed with CenterPoint. This update will fail if you previously manually installed an
RWS instance using a 64-bit version of SQL Server, in this case use Method 2.
All Windows updates must be applied to the computer prior to using this tool.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: I have CenterPoint on a network. Do I have to do perform the upgrade at each computer?
A: No, the upgrade is only needed on the server, however after running the tool you will need to make a new exception for SQLServr.exe
in your firewalls.
SQLServr.exe Exception:
1. Select Control Panel > Windows Firewall > Advanced settings (menu on the left). > Inbound Rules (on the left again).
2. On the right, select New Rule. This will display a wizard that will walk you through the process.
3. Select Program and then Next.

7. In the When Does This Rule Apply screen, select all fields and click Next.
8. In the Name field, enter SQLServr.exe Exception and click Finish.
Q: I have a full version of SQL Server, should I run this tool?
A: No, this tool is only for the RWS Instance of SQL Server Express installed with CenterPoint. It will not upgrade a full version of SQL
Server.
Q: I believe I manually installed a 64-bit version of SQL Server Express (2005, 2008, or 2012). Can I still upgrade?
A: Yes, you can use Method 2 to directly install SQL Server 2014 Express. It will install the 32-bit version.
Q: If the SQL Server installation fails, what should I do next?
A: Verify all Windows updates are installed, restart your computer and perform the installation again. If you are using Method 1, this could
mean you have a 64-bit version of SQL Server installed. If Method 1 continues to fail, perform Method 2.
