Chapter 5:
Backup Files/Directories
The Backup Files/Directories function under the TRACS Utilities menu option offers a quick way to
generate a backup of TRACS data and/or programs.
The backup function has options to perform the following tasks:
•
Backup fileset(s) (The main data fileset(s) established by your TRACS Account Manager
appears in parentheses after the option.)
•
Backup selected directories/files
•
Backup system (Complete backup of everything on the computer including operating system,
TRACS program and your company data)
•
List contents of floppy/tape (Verify that the data on the tape can be read)
From the TRACS main menu, select TRACS utilities. The following menu appears.

Backup Fileset(s)
Use this function to do a daily data backup. The data fileset(s) used in daily operation by your
company appears in parentheses and is the fileset that will be backed up by this process.
If you use Automatic End-of-Day Processing, this backup is specified as part of the automatic process.
Note: “Play” data is not included in the fileset(s) for backup. If you want a separate tape backup of the
“play” data, log in as “play” and select the backup option. The “play” fileset will appear in parentheses.
Type 1 at the Enter option Number prompt on the Backup Fileset(s) or Selected Directories or Files
menu. The following prompt appears:
Activate run-level "4"? (y/n):
Answer Y if you wish the backup to be done in single user mode. Single user mode is recommended
for data backups. Then, you are prompted:
Do you wish to Proceed? (y/n):
Answer Y to continue with the backup. If you have answered Y to activate run-level 4, the system logs
off all terminals that do not have run-level 4 authority. Answer N to return to the Backup menu. If you
answer Y, you will be prompted.
Insert the medium in the tape drive. Press <CR> when ready. [q]:
Make sure the tape is in the tape drive and press K to start the backup. Otherwise, press q
return to the menu without performing the backup.

During processing, the screen displays files being backed up. If required, the system will prompt for
additional tape(s). When the backup has completed successfully, the following message appears:
Procedure was successful
Press (E) followed by <CR> to exit:
Type E K to return to the TRACS Utilities menu.

If the backup was unsuccessful, the system will display an error message. Write down this message
and contact Customer Support.
Backup selected directories/files
This option is used in special situations under the direction of Customer Support. The option is used to
backup specific directories or files.
Type 2 at the Enter option Number prompt on the Backup Fileset(s) or Selected Directories or Files
menu. The following prompt appears:
Activate run-level "4"? (y/n):
Answer Y if you wish the backup to be done in single user mode. Single user mode is recommended
for data backups. Then, you are prompted:
Enter the full path for the file/directory to be backed up
File/Directory: /data/trak/@@
File/Directory:
Compu-Power Customer Support will guide you to type in the necessary full path name. Press
after you have finished entering the files and/or directories. You will then be prompted:
K
Do you wish to Proceed? (y/n):
Answer Y to continue with the backup. If you have answered Y to activate run-level 4, the system logs
off all terminals that do not have run-level 4 authority. Answer N to return to the Backup menu.

Backup system
This option gives you a full system backup. The backup includes the operating system files, programs,
and data. Use this option, periodically (usually once a month), and before installing any software
updates. This is NOT the same as a full system backup done through smit. The smit mksysb backup
is an image backup used to restore the system in the event of a hardware failure.
Type 3 at the Enter option Number prompt on the Backup Fileset(s) or Selected Directories or Files
menu. The following prompt appears:
Activate run-level "4"? (y/n):
Answer Y if you wish the backup to be done in single user mode. Single user mode is recommended
for full system backups. Then, you are prompted:
Do you wish to Proceed? (y/n):
Answer Y to continue with the backup. If you have answered Y to activate run-level 4, the system logs
off all terminals that do not have run-level 4 authority. Answer N to return to the Backup menu.
Insert the medium in the tape drive. Press <CR> when ready. [q]:

List contents of floppy/tape
This option displays the file contents of the backup tape or floppy diskette you place in the tape or disk
drive. Use this option to verify that a backup tape is “good” or “usable” for a restore. In other words,
use this option to be sure the system can “read” the tape or diskette. Use this option at any time during
normal operations.
Type 4 at the Enter option Number prompt on the Backup Fileset(s) or Selected Directories or Files
menu. The following prompt appears:
Do you wish to Proceed? (y/n):
Answer Y to continue. Answer N to return to the Backup menu.
Insert the medium in the tape drive. Press <CR> when ready. [q]:
Make sure the tape is in the tape drive and press

involved, the system will prompt for the additional tape(s). When the verification has completed
successfully, the following message appears:

K at the Utilities menu to return to the TRACS main menu.
NOTE: If you answered Y to the Activate run-level 4 prompt in any of these functions, you must put the
system back into multi-user mode.
Login as root
At the # prompt, type:
