Technical data of the Phonoface: Simple connection to the computer via USB "Class Compliant" device - NO driver installation necessary, does run directly under Windows 2000 SP4, Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista Stereo input for record deck systems (RCA/Phono sockets), switchable to LINE level. USB Powered, i.e. power supplied via USB connection of the computer Input capacity with three selectable stages (switch 1) (100 pF, 250 pF and 470 pF) Input level selectable (switch 2) between 5mVRMS/1kHz and 12mVRMS/1kHz for record player systems, as well as 2VRMS/1kHz for LINE devices For "Moving Magnet" (MM) pick-ups or high-output "Moving Coil" (MC) systems Not suitable for standard MC systems Distortion factor < 0,01 % (5 mVs) Indicator-LEDs for peak and signal Signal-to-noise ratio: >86 dB (A) Dynamic range: >86 dB (A) Connection and control elements: The switching positions are described in these operating instructions looking from the front of the unit (where the RCA sockets are located), the 1st position of the switch is that which is nearest to the RCA sockets. The 2nd position is the middle position, the 3rd position is the furthest one away from the RCA sockets. Connecting the Phonoface to your computer The connection of the Phonoface to the computer is very easy! Simply connect your Phonoface with the USB cable, which is packed with it, to a free USB port on your computer. When attaching the Phonoface the green LED lights up briefly and signals the correct power supply to the Phonoface. The installation under Windows will then take place automatically, a few seconds after connecting to your computer-system it will find a "USB Audio Codec" or "USB Audio Device", which can be used in each application and adjusted in the system control. Using the USB connection your digitized audio data can now be transfered to your computer! Phono and LINE input Please connect your record player to the two RCA sockets at the front, the right channel is red and the left channel is the white socket. The Phonoface can be used with record players with Moving magnet (MM) pick-ups and with high-output Moving Coil (MC) systems. (Standard Moving Coil (MC) systems cannot be used). For these pick-ups switch 2 should be sufficient when used with switching position 2, for a higher level try switching position 3. You can also connect devices with LINE level, e.g. Tape deck or CD players, for this please use switching position 1 at switch 2. Signal and peak indicator LEDs These two LEDS indicates an incoming audio signal at the Phonoface. With an error free signal the green signal LED lights up The red peak LED lights up when the signal level is too high, using the input level selector switch 2 you can adjust the signal level. Switch for the input capacity (switch 1) In the technical information from the maker of your pick-up system, you will find the recommended range for the input capacity of the preamplifier. Set the switch 1 to a value, which comes nearest to this range. If you do not have an indication of your pick-up, please use the central position. Switch for the input level (switch 2) This switch selects between the LINE level (position 1) and the two preamplifications 1 (position 2) and 2 (position 3). To record LINE devices it is neccesary to use position 1 of this switch. Headphone-Output (Stereo Mini Jack 3,5 mm) Connect your headphone to this output to monitor recordings or sounds from the computer. Tip and references Because of the very low output levels a Moving Magnet system is quite sensitive to electromagnetic waves, it is recommended where possible not to operate the record player and Phonoface directly beside power supplies or electrical devices. If a net-humming arises, you need a Phono adapter with a ground clamping screw to connect the grounding cable of the record player. Always set the input level to the maximum level of preamplification as a digital omission can not be overwritten and data may be lost! If the red peak LED lights up, reduce the input level to a lower preamplification until the LED do not indicate a peak - digital overdriving creates noticable audible interferences and distorted noises! References to the driver attitude under Windows audio sequencer programs such as Cubase, sonar or Samplitude: The Phonoface runs under hard disk-recording-programs in the "Full Duplex Mode" (simultaneous admission and rendition) usually only with ASIO Multimedia drivers, the WDM driver from Windows permits only one direction (admission or rendition) at the same time. We recommend the "ASIO for ALL" driver for the Phonoface under Windows XP, it`s a universal ASIO driver for soundcards and audio interfaces, free for private use. The latency time of the audio signal will be substantially reduced and it makes it possible to use monitoring- and full duplex- mode. The driver is to be found on the homepage http://www.asio4all.de/. The recording and restoration software "Magix Music Cleaning Lab" The bundled software, which is shipped with the Phonoface, is special software for re-working old or bad recordings. You will find simple functions for recording and editing music in addition, special functions like a "De-Noiser" and a "De-Crackler" for removing interferences and noises, a "De-Esser" to filter S-sounds and remove hissing, plus some more tools for music creation and mastering! Once satisfied you can prepare the recordings with mastering effects, e.g. edit with an "Equalizer" and a "Compressor" to make it more present and balanced. With the intergrated CD burn function, you can easily save to your own audio CD.. Reference to the driver setup in "Music Cleaning Lab" Press the "Record Audio" button, the recording settings window opens and you can select the recording device! Please select "USB Audio Codec" (or "USB Audio Device"), the Phonoface has already been recognised as the recording device. Because the "Music Cleaning Lab" dosen`t have ASIO driver support or the possibility of software monitoring, recordings cannot be heard during the recording process! However you can see both the input levels and the wave form during the recording. A detailed manual on "Music Cleaning Lab" can be found installed with the main program! We wish you much fun with this exciting program! After the installation this trial version is fully usable with all functions for 45 days, afterwards you can upgrade at www.magix.de for a continuous use license.
