File Sharing Setup (with FileBrowser)
The iPad needs an App of some sort to connect to network shares using the SMB (Windows) protocol. I
have found the the “FileBrowser” App works nicely at a cost of about $5.00. The instructions below use
the FileBrowser App.
Open the FileBrowser App. Choose the “+” button at the top of the Locations column.
Enter the address for the server where the share is located. In this example I am using
\\fushare2.fu.campus. You may need to ask for the name of server where your share is located.
The “Shoe More Settings” slider should be set to “ON.”
Enter your Furman network username.
I normally set app to ask for the password each time it connects (on demand).
Choose the “Save” button at the upper right. You should now have a listing for your server under the
“Remote Files” heading in the “Locations” column of FileBrowser.

Touch to choose your remote server. In the example it Fushare2.
You may have to authenticate with your network password.
Once you are connected to the server you should see a
listing of the visible shares on the right. If your share is
visible touch it to connect to it.
If your share is not visible touch the “Add Share” button
at the top right then type the name of the invisible share,
“Library$” for example.
In this case we choose “fcexports.”
You should see a listing on the right for of your fcexports
files and folders. At this point you should bookmark the
share so it will be easier to find the next time.
Click the “+” symbol at the bottom of the Filebrowser window under the share file listing to add a
bookmark.

The next time you want to connect to a share that has been bookmarked you can run FileBrowser,
Choose the Bookmarks button at the bottom and then touch the share name in the bookmarks column.
You may have to authenticate with your network username and password.
When you see the list of files in your network share you may touch the file name to open it in a default
app or you may touch the right-arrow button to get more options.

In this case I chose the right –arrow for the ArcGIS 10 Client
Setup.pdf file. I next chose the “Open In…” option.
I now see a list of Apps which can open the file.
That’s it. You can work with VPN and the FileBrowser App
along with other Apps for working with various file formats.
Note: Remember to turn VPN off in the Settings menu when
finished.
