Move Data/Settings From an
Old iPad to a New iPad
Using iTunes
Copy all data from your old iPad to your computer:
1. Connect the old iPad to the computer where it syncs.
2. If iTunes doesn’t launch automatically, open iTunes.
3. If a window appears asking if you want to update iTunes, iPad iOS, etc, click “No”, “Don’t
Download”, or “Cancel”.
4. If the screen says, “Welcome to your New iPad”, click “Register Later”
5. iTunes will begin syncing your old iPad. Do not disconnect your iPad during this process. When
it is complete, a message will appear in the progress bar near the top, center of the screen saying
“iPad sync is complete. OK to disconnect.” DO NOT DISCONNECT the iPad.
6. Next, click “File” then “Transfer purchases from…”
7. Next, you need to sync all content that you want to move to the new iPad. To do this, under
“Devices” on the left hand column, click on the name of your device then click the buttons at the
top of the screen:
a. To move Apps to new iPad, click “Apps”, then place a check in the box next to “Sync
Apps” (Make sure all apps listed below are checked as well)
b. To move Music, click “Music”, then place a check in the box next to “Sync Music” (You
can choose to sync “Entire music library” or “Select playlists, artists, albums, and
genres”)
c. To move Movies, click “Movies”, then place a check in the box next to “Sync Movies” (If
you check the box “Automatically Include”, you can specify whether to include all, recent,
unwatched, etc. )
d. Do the same for TV Shows and Podcasts
e. To move Books, click “Books”, then “Sync Books”. (Make sure all books that you want to
move to the new iPad have a check next to them.)
f. To move Photos, click “Photos”, then “Sync Photos from…” (You can specify whether to
include all folders or selected folders and if you want to include videos.)
8. Click “Apply” at the lower right corner of the screen. The iPad will begin a sync. Once complete,
you may disconnect the old iPad from the computer.
All content should now be synced and backed up to your computer.
Copy data to your new iPad from your computer:

Connect the new iPad to the computer that you synced to old iPad to.
If iTunes doesn’t launch automatically, open iTunes.
On the screen that says, “Welcome to your New iPad”, click “Register Later”
On the “Free Find My iPad” screen, click “Not Now” (You can install this at a later time.)
On the “Software License Agreement” screen, you will need to put a check in the box stating that
you have read & agree to the terms then click “Continue”.
On the “Set Up Your iPad” screen, select “Restore from Backup of …” (Select the name of your
old iPad from the list) then click “Continue”.
DO NOT DISCONNECT YOUR IPAD until you receive the message that is it OK to disconnect.
If prompted to Download & Update your iPad software, select “Download & Update”.
a. If doing an update, click “Next”, then “Agree”. This update may take some time to
complete.)
b. After the update, your iPad will automatically restart.
c. If a “Autoplay” window appears, click the red X to close it.
d. Once the the iPad restarts, you can continue with the restore process.
Your iPad will begin a sync.
When you receive the message that is it OK to disconnect, you may unplug your iPad from the
computer and close iTunes.
Everything from your old iPad should now be on your new iPad.
NOTE: You will need to recreate any folders you had on your old iPad.
Erase EVERYTHING from your old iPad:
1. Once you are confident that all of your Apps, Books, etc. are on your new iPad, you can erase
everything from the old iPad so that it can be repurposed. To do this, open the “Settings” app
2. Tap “General” then on the right side menu, tap the last item “Reset”.
3. Tap “Erase All Content and Settings”.
4. A message will appear letting you know that this will delete all media and data, and reset all
settings, tap “Erase”.
Your iPad should now be completely erased and reset (like the moment you took it out of the
box.)
