Notable Enclosure Differences
An aluminum 7000 alloy and several processes were used
to fabricate the back enclosure of the Apple iPad Pro. These
factors contributed to a higher cost when compared to the
Surface Pro 4’s cast magnesium enclosure. We estimate
the costs in material and fabrication processes of the
Surface Pro 4’s back enclosure to be only 60% of the costs
of those for the iPad Pro.
Apple iPad Pro
The aluminum 7000 alloy is similar to what was used in the
iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus smartphones. However,
Aluminum 7000 is combined with zinc (Zn), while the
aluminum 6000 used in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus is
alloyed with magnesium (Mg). As a result, Al 7000 is a
stronger alloy than Al 6000.

• A Total System Cost percentage chart is included in the Deep Dive analysis BoM files included with every device. These charts show
the percentage impact that each category contributed to the total build cost of the device. In the charts above, you can see that
the Display/Touchscreen subsystem contributed 30% of the total costs to manufacture and build the iPad Pro, while for the
Microsoft Surface Pro 4 the Display/Touchscreen contributed only about 26% of the total cost.
• The detailed BoMs (not shown) for the Display/Touchscreen for both devices indicate the Apple display was 30% more expensive
than the Surface Pro 4. It is typical for Apple display/touchscreen subsystems to have higher costs compared to the display costs of
other devices.
• Note that the Surface Pro 4 has an “Other Subsystems” category. This category is comprised of the costs for the SSD, IR Camera,
and Surface Pen subsystems in this device. The iPad Pro has no separate subsystems other than those identified above.
• The most notable difference in costs allocation was seen in the Main Electronic Assemblies. We estimate a ~$32 cost impact for the
components needed to support the cellular capability of the iPad Pro. These components include all of the RF components and the
Qualcomm Baseband processor. We also found three dedicated power management ICs in the iPad Pro versus the 12A DC/DC
converter and other smaller regulators and converters from Texas Instruments found in the Surface Pro 4. The cost difference for
power management in the iPad Pro was almost 7x that of the Surface Pro 4.

Comparison Summary
• Both devices have 2.4 GHz WiFi and Bluetooth functionality as well as 5 GHz WiFi. The Murata WiFi/BT front-end module (FEM)
that we found in the iPad Pro was very similar to the Murata WiFi/BT FEM found in the Apple MacBook A1534.
• The main differences in the WiFi/Bluetooth RF paths of the two devices is that the Apple iPad Pro has additional SAW filters,
while the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 has a WiFi RF Isolator, SAR Proximity Sensor, and capacitively-coupled antennas.

Comparison Summary
• The operating system for the Apple iPad Pro is iOS9, while the Microsoft Surface Pro 4, of course, runs Windows 10. Consumer
reviews of Windows-based products indicate that they tend to have long boot-up times and consume more power than their
counterparts running other operating systems. We did not run tests to verify these observations. However, on the iPad Pro we
found that power management was handled by a single Qualcomm IC, presumably for the RF and baseband functions, and two
Apple-specific branded ICs. Our experience leads us to believe that these two Apple-marked ICs are customized IC components
specific to the iPad Pro. In the Surface Pro 4, we found several small converters and regulators, and a single large 12A DC/DC
component, all supplied by Texas Instruments.
• Another difference is that Apple’s audio implementation incorporates a total of four speakers, two on the top and two on the
bottom. In the Microsoft device, it has only two speakers on its top portion. Apple uses four separate audio power amplifiers for
their four speakers, while this functionality must have been built in to the Realtek Audio CODEC in the Microsoft Surface Pro 4.

• The back enclosures were the largest non-electronic cost for both devices. However, when we take into account the magnesium
kickstand for the Surface Pro 4, the combined cost of both the back enclosure and the kickstand is still less than the cost of the
back enclosure alone of the iPad Pro.

Comparison Summary
• There was no heatsink on the Apple A9x processor, whereas the Intel Core M processor in the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 was
assembled with a heatsink, similar to the Core M processor we found in the MacBook A1534. Core M processors are ideal for
ultrabooks, where system fans are omitted in order to design thin devices. The addition of the heatsink in both the Surface Pro 4
and the MacBook helps ensure that any heat that is generated is adequately dissipated from the processor.
• In the Surface Pro 4, the heatsink for the Core M processor was part of a larger heatsink assembly. This heatsink assembly was
made of mainly copper and included an additional heatsink for the battery cells, which was attached to the back enclosure.

Comparison Summary
• Display backlighting, in general, is the main consumer of energy in many mobile devices. We found that the displays in both
devices used a 48-LED light strip, which were notably similar in construction.
Surface Pro 4 Backlight LED Assembly
• Both products have front and rear cameras. Both rear-facing cameras are 8 MP. However, the iPad Pro has a 1.2 MP front-facing
camera, while the Surface Pro 4 has a 5 MP. The 5 MP camera almost doubles the camera costs in the Surface Pro 4 compared to
the iPad Pro.
• Security is implemented by Apple’s use of a capacitance fingerprint reader, whereas Microsoft uses IR face recognition. Both
require additional hardware to be added to the device. Apple uses a TouchID Capacitive Sensor and a Secure Microcontroller,
which Apple first implemented in the Apple iPhone 5s. Microsoft uses an IR emitter married to an IR sensor with a lens
assembly, which is their first implementation of this technology.
• For IC content, the Apple tablet with cellular functionality has a total of 113 IC packages versus the 165 ICs found in the
Microsoft Surface Pro 4. This is a little unusual since Apple has additional cellular capabilities. One reason for the fewer-thanexpected IC count in the Apple is that the iPad Pro was designed with ICs that integrate multiple die into single packages.
• The Apple iPad Pro is directed more towards the business user who needs cellular functionality on the go. It retails for $180
more than the Microsoft Surface Pro 4. The Surface Pro 4 seems more directed at replacing laptops used in the home.
