1 Installation
This chapter lists the steps involved in setting unpacking and setting up the CHA-1001
hardware and software. Installation consists of the following steps, each of which is
described in this section.

Installation

Unpacking the System
We recommend that two people perform the unpacking. Have a table or workbench
available.

Open the shipping container.

Remove the accessory box.
Installation

With one person on each side of the container, reach around the ends of the
chassis and lift the chassis and foam out of the container. Set the chassis on the
table.

Cut the shrink wrap holding the rack-mount slides. Remove the slides and set
aside.
E.
With one person at each end of the chassis, lift the chassis to remove the weight
from the foam packaging and remove the foam starting at the front of the chassis.

Install Qbus modules
Before removing the Qbus interfaces from your existing Qbus chassis, make a list of the
interfaces and their slots. You may wish to label the cables and panels that are used with
each interface. Appendix A provides worksheets for listing your existing interfaces, panels,
and cables.
When selecting slots for Qbus interfaces in the new chassis, keep in mind the DMA and
interrupt priorities of each interface. A grant priority chart is shown in Figure 1-1. Slot 1 has
the highest priority and slot 8 the lowest priority. Qbus interrupt/DMA grant chains for DEC
systems are provided in Appendix B.

Ensure that any vacant slots between the Qbus module and Qbus interfaces have a Q-bus
grant module installed.
The CHA-1001 backplane layout is shown in Figure 1-2. The CAQ-2101 Qbus module is
factory-installed in slot 1, connectors A and B. This module provides connection to the
NuVAX via I/O panel CPX-2101.
C and D connectors of slot 1 have a bus grant continuity card installed. The grant card can be
removed to make space for a dual-sized interface if desired.

Install I/O panels
Some Qbus interfaces require connection to user equipment. You can use the I/O panels and
cables that are connected to your existing Qbus interfaces and install them in the rear panel or
I/O bulkhead of the CHA-1001. The I/O bulkhead is shown in Figure 1-3. The bulkhead
provides 2 ‘B’ size slots, or one ‘double B’ slot and 3 ‘A’ size slots. A special DE9 slot is
also provided.

Cable to the NuVAX or NuPDP system
The supplied cable CAB-1104-8 is used to connect the CHA-1001 and the NuVAX or
NuPDP system as shown in Figure 1-4.

Rack mount the chassis
If desired, the chassis can be rack mounted using the supplied rack mount slides. See Figures
1-5 and 1-6.

Apply power to the system
The CHA-1001 contains an auto-sensing power supply that will accept both 120VAC, 60 Hz
input and 240VAC, 50 Hz input. Apply AC power using the appropriate power cable. The
CHA-1001 is supplied with a standard power cable for 120VAC power when shipped to the
United States or Canada. A 240VAC power cable is user supplied.
Power is applied using the rocker switch at the front right side of the chassis.

2 General Description
The CHA-1001 is a rack-mountable Qbus expansion chassis for use with NuVAX and
NuPDP systems. It provides a replacement to Digital Equipment Corporation’s BA23 and
BA123 expansion chassis and is compatible with dual and quad-width Qbus interfaces. The
CHA-1001 mounts in a standard 19 inch Retma rack and accommodates up to eight quadwidth Qbus modules or sixteen dual width modules.

3 Operation and Maintenance
This section provides basic maintenance information for your CHA-1000 expansion chassis.
The CHA-1001 is designed for low-maintenance, trouble-free operation. Two areas require
attention from time to time:
•
Keep the air filters clean as described below and minimize dust when possible.
•
Replace the fuse at the rear of the chassis as needed.
Air filter maintenance and fuse replacement are described in the following sections.
Air Filters
Clean the fan air filters along the side of the chassis as often as necessary to prevent
overheating due to reduced air movement. Generally, dust poses no danger to a computer,
except for disk drives. Conductive dust, however, such as metal or carbon particles, can be
problematic.
Note: Filters do not remove fumes or gases. Do not use the chassis in environments where
airborne contaminants may damage the system.

The fuse at the rear of the chassis (F6.3AH 250V) can be replaced by one of the following:

General Description
To access the fuse:
1. Use a slotted screwdriver and turn 1/8 turn to the left to release fuse holder.
2. Slide the fuse out of the holder and replace with new fuse.
3. Press the fuse holder in and tighten with 1/8 turn to the right.
