COMMISSIONERS PRESENT:

COMMISSIONERS ABSENT:

1. CALL TO ORDER; WELCOME; ROLL CALL
Chair Jones called the regular meeting to order at 6:41 p.m. and welcomed
everyone. Jarvis Emerson called the roll. A quorum was established for the
Commission.
2. PUBLIC COMMENT ON MATTERS NOT ON THE AGENDA
No public comment.
3. REVIEW AND APPROVAL OF MINUTES, November 1, 2016*
After review, it was moved (Beech) and seconded (Nehdar) to approve the
Minutes of November 1, 2016. (Motion unanimously carried) (Absent: Broxton,
Samra, Sata)
4. NEW BUSINESS
INFORMATION ITEM
о WELCOME NEW COMMISSIONER EMMA OSHAGAN
Chair Jones welcomed and introduced new Commissioner, Emma Oshagan.
о HUMAN TRAFFICKING OUTREACH PROJECT LETTER TO CITY COUNCIL
Discussion of letter and how the Commission can partner with the Commission
on the Status of Women and perhaps host a forum on this topic.
ACTION ITEMS
e REKINDLING THE LIGHT OF PEACE, January 7, 2017
Assembymember Chris Holden will serve as this year’s event keynote speaker.
Event program will be finalized as soon as possible in order to coordinate
audio/visual needs and letters will be sent out to invitees.
e COMMISSION PAMPHLET REVIEW AND APPROVAL
Tabled due Commissioner Samra’s absence.
*e PEACE THROUGH MUSIC CONCERT
Commissioner Nehdar expressed his desire that the Commission continue to
host this event as he sees it as a cornerstone. Commissioner Beech suggested
that the musical selection be broadened.
o HRC AWARDS
Commissioner Nehdar suggested that there be ongoing nominations for the
various Commission awards and also suggested handing out awards on a
quarterly basis rather than annually.
e EVENT MARKETING/MEDIA OUTREACH
Discussion of strategies to improve event turnout.
5. OLD BUSINESS
ACTION ITEMS
e Forums Committee
Commission thanked Commissioner Lamar for facilitating recent forum. Although
turnout was low it allowed for forum attendees to engage in meaningful
conversation. Next forum topic will be on topic of policing and Commissioners
Lamar, Jones, and Sata will serve on the committee.
e HRC Academy Committee
Discussion tabled until next meeting.
* Police Appreciation Luncheon
Luncheon will take place on Wednesday, December 14" from 11:30 a.m - 2 p.m.
6. REPORTS, CORRESPONDENCE
A. Report from Chair
Chair Jones reported that the City Council discussed establishing City of
Pasadena as a “Sanctuary City” at December 5, 2016 meeting and topic will be
placed on a future agenda.
B. Ad Hoc Committee Reports
No report.
C. Commissioner Updates/Comments
Commissioner Nehdar would like there to be more pre-planning and outreach
related to events.

D. Staff Updates/Reports
Staff requested a distribution list for event invites.
7. SUGGESTED AGENDA ITEMS FOR FUTURE COMMISSION MEETINGS
e Discuss student advisory group
е Commissioner Nehdar suggested invite Council and Mayor to future
Commission meetings
e Chair Jones would like the Commission to discuss authoring a letter asking the
Public Safety Committee to either change the time of their meeting from 4:30
p.m. to a time where more community members could attend or recording their
meetings.
8. ADJOURNMENT
It was moved (Oshagan) and seconded (Nehdar) to adjourn the meeting at
7:35 p.m. (Motion unanimously carried) (Absent: Broxton, Samra, Sata) The
meeting was adjourned.
