GENERAL
This document describes the procedure for installing an Ortronics “iTracs Sensor Strip Retrofit Kit” to an Ortronics angled or
curved patch panel. Since there are many variations of patch panels, this procedure should be used as a guide for all flat patch
panels. Where appropriate, differences in procedure for 1RU and 2RU panels are described.
2 TOOLS REQUIRED FOR ASSEMBLY
#1 Philips Head Screwdriver – required to mount the connector transition to the Spacer Shim.
#3 Philips Head Screwdriver – required to mount the patch panel to the rack
7/64 inch Allen Wrench – for mounting the NGA DB-25F to Ribbon Adapter.

ASSEMBLY
4.1
Inspect the package contents before assembling to ensure conformance with the parts listed in Section 3.
4.2
Using a #3 Philips screwdriver, loosen the four (4) screws securing the patch panel to the rack. Remove the right-side
screws (when facing the front of the patch panel) from the rack completely.
4.3
Locate the end of the ribbon cable where the keying tab on the connector is pointing towards the cable (see Figure 1).

4.4
Thread this end of the ribbon cable (from the rear of the patch panel) between the right side rail of the rack and the back
of the patch panel’s mounting surface until a few inches of the cable protrude beyond the edge of the patch panel. With
the ribbon cable flat against the rack rail, the connector side with the keying tab should face forward (see Figure 2a).
4.5
For 48-port, 2RU patch panels, two ribbon cables are required (see Figure 2b).
4.6
Replace the two right-side patch panel mounting screws, ensuring that the ribbon cable(s) remains between them.

Slide the spacer shim(s) under the right side of the patch panel, until the stand-offs are touching the side of the patch
panel.
4.7.1
For 1RU patch panels, the top of the shim must be lined up with the top of the patch panel and that the ribbon cable
must be located in the gap between the shim’s tabs (see Figure 3a).
4.7.2
For 2RU patch panels, two shims are required. The top of the top shim must be lined up with the top of the patch
panel. The bottom of the bottom shim must be lined up with the bottom of the patch panel. Each of the ribbon
cables must be located in the gap between its shim’s tabs (see Figure 3b).

Tighten the right-side patch panel screws lightly, ensuring that the shims have not shifted out of proper position and that
the ribbon cable has not been pinched under the patch panel. Check that the cable can be pulled back and forth freely
thru the gap under the patch panel. Tighten the right and left-side patch panel mounting screws to the specified torque.
Sensor Strip Mounting
4.9
The sensor strips are fastened to the front of the patch panel using the plastic retaining clips. The clips are inserted thru
the appropriate slots in the sensor strip and snap into the icon holes on the patch panel.
4.10
Place the sensor strip over the patch panel so that the bottom of the strip is directly above the openings of the RJ-45
jacks and the connector is located on the right side of the patch panel. Slide the sensor strip left and right slightly, until
the icon holes for ports 1 and 24 are clearly visible in their entirety thru the slots in the sensor strip (see Figures 4a and
4b).
Note: The strip must be located such that the pogo-pin of the connector will contact the gold pad on the flex strip
above each RJ-45 jack.

Gently squeeze the retaining clip until the barbed blades are touching and insert them into the icon hole of port 24 (see
Figures 5a and 5b). Push the clip into the patch panel until it clicks in place (see Figure 5c). Do not use excessive
force, as it might deform the clip.

4.12
Install the next clip at port 1.
4.13
Install the remaining clips in every slot on the patch panel. A minimum of two (2) clips is recommended per 6 module
section of the flex.
4.14
Mount the Connector Transition portion of the flex to the Spacer Shim with the two #4-40 x ¼, screws provided with
the kit using a #1 Philips Head Screwdriver (see Figure 6).

I/O Cable Connection
4.15
Move both ejector tabs on the sensor strip connector to the upright position (see Figure 7).

4.16
Plug the ribbon cable into the sensor strip connector and ensure that it is seated firmly (see Figure 8).
Do not use excessive force.

Pull the ribbon cable through to the rear of the patch panel until only the minimum required length is visible. Leave
enough cable to ensure that there is some slack left and no tension is placed on the sensor strip.
4.18
Fold the ribbon cable at the rear of the patch panel as shown in Figure 9 and gently tie it down to keep it out of the way
until the next step can be completed. Do not fold the cable so tight that it is creased.

4.19 The ribbon cable at the rear of the patch panel can then be connected to the NGA
DB-25F to Ribbon Adapter (see Figure 10). The NGA DB-25F to Ribbon Adapter will connect to the NGA via the DB25 cable as shown in Figure 11. The NGA DB-25F to Ribbon Adapter is mounted to the cable management bar by a
Socket Head Cap Screw (part of item 5), it may be necessary to tighten the screw with an Allen wrench.
