‘Why Polecam?’
•
Polecam gives you a crane type shot when you couldn’t get one before either due
to restrictive location or budget.
•
To put a crane in a boat or a car has always been exclusive to Hollywood – not now!
•
The portability of Polecam is always a big winner. With a rig time of 10 minutes
and the ability to carry a Polecam as well as an ordinary Betacam unit in an
ordinary car makes it unique.
•
Polecam is not an essential piece of kit. You can cover a football match with 1
camera so why does Sky Television have up to 20 – the answer is increased
production value. Polecam gives a crane shot when one has to been able to get one
before whether it be the pit lane of a motor racing circuit (Polecam is the only
crane ever to be licensed in a pit lane due to the fact that tripods are forbidden)
or a small studio for the shopping channel. It is all about increased production
value.
•
The number of TV stations available in Europe has grown by a factor of 50 but the
money available on productions has not increased accordingly. Therefore cost
effective production value is essential.
•
With the advent of the remote racking systems such as the Optex unit or a
Camplex system, Polecam is now completely OB/multi-camera compatible.
•
Sony have just launched their new DSR50 DV-Cam field recorder player which has
a 26-pin connector, component input as well as 4 channels of audio, half the size
and almost a 1/5th of the price of its predecessors. (~£4,000 and not £17,000 or
a BVW50DVW250). The quality of the recorded image is also far better than
BetaSP and as good as Digi-Beta.
•
Health & Safety is becoming more of an issue nowadays and lots of people are
worried about having a big head unit with a full size camera. If you get hit by a
Jimmy Jib, you may wake up in hospital. If you hit someone with a Polecam you’ll
probably get hit back.

Instruction Manual
Polecam
A man-portable, single operator jib arm and camera system with a 1.5m – 6m (5’ – 19.7’) reach, weighing a maximum of 20kgs (44lbs),
packed into two bags with a total carrying weight of just 35kgs (77lbs). Mounted on a remote pan & tilt unit is a 3 chip mini-camera and the
rig itself will attach to the Polecam harness or any tripod, dolly or vehicle.
Polecam provides smooth, floating jib arm shots, with the ability to relocate with ease. This is due to the fact that Polecam can be attached to the
body by way of a harness, which has been designed in conjunction with a registered osteopath to aid weight distribution and portability. The Polecam
can be operated in the harness or on a tripod, with a relocation time in as long as it takes to walk there, be it just a few steps, up some steps or even
in & out of a boat - much easier than with a conventional jib.
The lightweight nature is all due to a radical redesign of the concept of a jib arm, including materials used in construction as well as the latest
camera technology.
The rig comes complete with 5 universal, custom wound carbon fibre sections each measuring over 1m (40”) in length and 4cm (1.6”) in diameter, which
provide useable, steady shots during booming. A small FX microphone is also positioned at the end of the boom.
The counterweight arm of the Polecam rig only protrudes to the rear a maximum of 1m, and contains the counterweights, batteries (10Ah), CCU &
Interface Unit.
Polecam can be rigged and de-rigged quickly, and is unique in that it requires NO tools in construction. The average rig time is 10 minutes
with de-rig time of 5 minutes.
Polecam breaks down into two custom designed bags developed by CP Mega in the Pro-Bag range (Cordura by DuPont) with the mast bag having
backpack harness capability.
The 3-chip, 750 line resolution mini-camera, with a component/composite output to Digi-beta/Beta SP recorder or microwave link, plus optional SDI
converter, is mounted on a custom made, self leveling, miniature pan & tilt unit, with joystick remote, allowing the camera to be moved quickly and
smoothly. The unit also incorporates a mechanical iris drive for the lens, controlled from the joystick itself (or by remote from an OB van). The
whole unit is small enough to drop into a cup of coffee! However, the system can incorporate most mini-cam systems both single & triple chip.
The entire head unit weighs less then 0.5kg (1lb) and is therefore very appealing from a health & safety aspect.
Polecam can also be used from the back of a moving vehicle such as car, jeep, golf buggy, quad bike etc. and even from the back of a motorbike, as
well as fixed to any tripod, remote head, stand or dolly system.
Viewing of the camera picture is by means of a high quality TFT LCD monitor mounted on the boom. All the cables between the P&T head unit and
the rear end pass inside the mast as opposed to being strapped to the outside. This aids rig time as well as protecting the cables themselves.
Polecam can be used in a variety of applications ranging from sport, music, documentary, drama, security & military, corporate and wildlife.
With its unique versatility, Polecam can go where no crane has gone before!
NB. POLECAM is Registered Trademark and Patent Pending

There are four switches on the Interface Unit and their operation is detailed as follows:
1.
The ‘Power’ switch controls the electrical power to the system and its accessories.
IT IS VITAL THAT ALL CABLES ARE CONNECTED TO THE INTERFACE UNIT BEFORE THE POWER SWITCH IS
ACTIVATED. IT IS ALSO ESSENTIAL TO POWER OFF THE CAMERA AND SERVO SYSTEMS BEFORE
DISCONNECTING ANY CABLES IRREPARABLE DAMAGE TO THE CCU AND SERVO SYSTEMS MAY RESULT IF YOU DO
NOT HEED THIS WARNING!
2.
The ‘Monitor’ switch selects which video source feeds the picture monitor.
In ‘REC’ position the monitor is fed from the video return via a video recorder connected to the 26 pin connector. This is to
enable confidence monitoring whilst recording to tape. In OB position the monitor is fed from the video output of the camera.
3.
The ‘Alarm’ switch enables an audible warning of battery condition.
The battery status (BS) LED shows you the state of charge of the batteries. The LED will change colour to reflect the voltage

Polecam Joystick
Pan Reverse Switch
Tilt Reverse Switch
Polecam is driven by a proportional joystick, i.e. the more you deflect the joystick from the centre position the faster the servo will
turn. Low speed is OFF. Do not set at low speed.
Direction of both Pan & Tilt can both be reversed (see above).
The mechanical iris can also be controlled via the joystick.
‘Tally/Rec On’ feature allows the control of recorders via the 26 pin CCZ connector.
By switching to the ‘Rec ON’ position when a recorder is in rec/play/pause mode recording will commence. Switching back again
pauses recording.
The tally light indicates the recorder status. This is an ultrabright LED within a domed bezel which is easily monitored by the
operator from all angles.
A solid red light indicates tape is rolling.
A flashing red light indicates a warning such as tape finished or the battery status of the recorder.
Power Supply
Polecam is designed to run from a standard battery supply at a nominal 12v but it will also run on any suitably smoothed D.C. supply from
10.8v to 17v such as the Polecam Mains Power Unit. The power connector is a 4 pin XLR F with Pin 4 – 12v and Pin 1 – 0v.
The Polecam battery warning alert is also displayed on the tally light as a blinking red light. This can also be accompanied by an audible
warning switched of or on on the interface unit.

Assembly and Cable Rigging
Try and find level ground. If on grass always try and use a ground sheet. Although the rig is designed to be built with no tools, small
parts can still be dropped. It also gives you a nice flat, clean and dry surface to make adjustments or modifications.
Always build the rig with all five sections initially. Each section is approx. 1.1m (3.5’) long.
1.
Remove the rigging stands from the mast bag and set up about 1m (39”) apart.
2.
Place Polecam Section 1 on to the rigging stands (securing it with the velcro straps) or attach to any suitable tripod.
3.
Take 1 carbon fibre section from them mast bag and slide it onto Section 1, ensuring that the locking pin engages. Slide the
rigging stand forwards to the front of this section.
4.
Select the camera cable (30X), the pan and tilt cable (54X) and, if required, the microphone cable (55X). Unroll them onto a
clean surface taking care not to damage the connectors. (N.B. As the joystick cable and P&T cable have identical connectors on
both ends they can be rigged either way round).
5.
Insert the head ends of the cables into the cable feeder and feed them into the boom.
6.
Add further sections, as above, moving the rigging stand along with each new section, until five carbon fibre sections are
asembled.
7.
At the head end of the unit remove the cable feeder and make sure there is approx. 60cm (24”) of camera cable, 10cm (4”) of
P&T cable and 2cm (1”) of microphone cable protruding from the boom.
8.
Take the head assembly from the unit bag. Put a little silicone grease around the head unit O ring and insert the head unit into
the end of the boom ensuring that the cables are seated in the slot on the underside of the unit and are not pinched. Tighten
the knurled nut to secure it.
9.
Remove protective cable caps and connect the camera and the head unit to their cables.
10. At the rear end of the boom reverse coil the excess camera, P&T and microphone cables and hang them on the cable hook
leaving the cable ends hanging (hanging length required will be same as power cable (58X).
11.
Take the monitor from the foam insert and attach it to the monitor clamp then strap the monitor and clamp onto the Polecam
boom approximately 70 cms (28”) from the end of Section 1.
12. Attach the camera CCU and the interface unit to velcro on the mounting plate of Section 1 ensuring that the power switch is
in the OFF position.
13. Connect the P&T (54X) and microphone (55X) cables to their labelled sockets on the interface unit and the camera cable (30X)
to the CCU.
15. Remove the rubber grommet from the upper side of Section 1 and feed the monitor cable (60X) and joystick cable (59X)
through the grommet and down through the access hole in the to Section 1. Push them through until they emerge from
the rear of Section 1 and connect them to their labelled sockets on the interface unit.
16. Connect the CCU to interface cable (56X) between the CCU and the interface unit.
17. Connect the power cable (58X) from the interface unit to the CCU.
18. Connect the joystick and the monitor to their cables and secure onto the boom using the velcro strap.
19. Connect the power cable (58X) to its socket on the battery holder and leave disconnected from the interface unit for now.
Leave dangling to give visual confirmation that there is no power to the system.
20. Any cables that lead to external equipment (audio, video, VTR multipin, etc) should be attached to the boom near the pivot
point, using the velcro strain relief strap provided.
21. When all connections have been made to the CCU and interface unit insert the batteries into their holders.
22. Attach the necessary counterweights to the plate at the end of the rear Section 1 (see Specification on page 3) and
secure tightly with the velcro strap. WARNING YOU MUST ENSURE THAT ROUGH VELCRO ALWAYS ATTACHES TO
SMOOTH VELCRO AND THAT YOUR FEET ARE NOT DIRECTLY BELOW THE BUMP PLATE UNTIL THE VELCRO
SAFETY STRAP IS SECURED.
The system is now ready to power up.

Power Up Sequence
1.
Connect power cable (58X) from battery unit to interface unit.
2.
Switch on power at the interface unit.
3.
Switch on camera on CCU.
4.
Switch on monitor.
•
To power off: Reverse the order of the above sequence.
When system is fully powered up and tested put protective Section 1 cover on and if required the monitor sun hood and joystick
cover.
Check Points
Ensure iris is open and iris selector on the joystick is switched to ‘Local’.
Check that servo speed is not at zero.
Check monitor selector switch. If switched to rec. mode when there is no recorder attached you will not see a picture.
Ensure battery alarm is switched on on the interface unit.
Harness
You will need to operate Polecam from the harness when working from the back of a moving vehicle, boats, motor racing pit lanes
and other situations when operating from a tripod is not possible.
When working from moving vehicles or boats always use safety harness equipment. Although the Polecam harness has been
manufactured to a very high standard and tested rigorously it has not been certified as a safety harness. If in any doubt please
use the correct safety equipment as instructed by your Health & Safety Officer.
1.
It is advisable to warm up the muscles with some simple stretching before using Polecam on the harness.
2.
Put the harness on making sure that it fits tightly but comfortably. By pulling down on the hanging side you should be able to
feel even weight on both sides as well as across the webbing at the back. It is normal for the shoulder strap on the non rig
hanging side to be shorter.
3.
Release the safety straps from the boom supports and pick up the rig from underneath to find the balancing point then
replace rig onto supports.
3.
Standing beside the boom, attach the harness to the mounting on top of the boom at the balancing point you have found
previously.
4.
Carefully let go of the boom to see if the balance point is correct – generally it is better to achieve a balance point that
allows the head end of the boom to rise when you release it.
5.
Ensure the horizon of the camera is correct.
6.
Always operate with the rig-side leg forward.

Basic Operating Instructions
Directors
Polecam is a unique piece of equipment that gives a shot which directors/producers have never been able to get before due to cost or
restrictive locations. As an operator you will need to have to advise them as to what you and Polecam can and cannot do. You may need to be
firm about what is not possible but always be prepared to try something new. Remember you can be of great assistance to a director in so
much that you know the capabilities of Polecam. If you don’t feel safe about the shot, don’t do it. Offer an alternative rather than refusing
– give solutions not problems.
Operating – Getting Started
Always use Polecam on a tripod when getting started. Only use Polecam on the harness once you are completely familiar with the equipment
and are confident with basic operation.
Step 1 – Learn the P&T action fully before attempting to combine this with booming. Start with the crane locked off high. Learn to follow
a subject that is at least 2m (6’) away moving from left to right. Slowly allow the subject to get closer to the camera until eventually it is
underneath the camera. It is at this point that you can start work on 360° spins. Always beware of not looking back at yourself or looking
up and therefore seeing the top of the head unit. Also always be aware of where the camera is and of the amount of twists in the camera
cable (if you get twisted the head unit will not turn and the clutch will slip.)
Step 2 – Basic booming. Take a static subject that is at least 2m (6’) from the camera and using the boom and P&T unit, slowly boom from
left to right keeping the subject in centre of frame at all times. Then boom up and down keeping the subject in the centre of the frame.
Next start to move the boom in a square eventually moving on to a figure of eight (again keeping the subject in the centre of the frame at
all times. Slowly move closer and closer to the object until you are directly above it and are able to scan from the sides and over the top.
Step 3 – It is important to get used to flying the Polecam without using the monitor. You must watch the head unit at all times. A good
exercise/demonstration of this is to try to fly the camera into a coffee cup – you will find it much easier to achieve by watching the head
unit rather than the monitor.
Step 4 – Start to create more and more complex moves with a moving subject.
Finally – Once you feel comfortable with the movement of the boom and P&T unit, move on to operating from the harness.
Extending or Shortening the Boom
1.
Replace the rig onto the rigging stands (front rigging stand behind section to be removed or added) and secure with the velcro
straps.
2. Remove the protection cover from Section 1.
3. Power off the system. THIS IS VITAL!! (see Power Up Sequence ) and remove counterweights and batteries.
4. Unplug the Pan & Tilt and camera cable and unlock the head unit, remove it and replace into the foam insert in the unit bag.
5. To remove sections of the boom depress the locking pin and twist the section through 90° before pulling out. Pull excess cable
from rear of unit until correct cable lengths are protruding from the head end. Repeat this step until the desired boom length is
achieved moving the front rigging stand back at each time.
To extend the boom reverse steps 1-4 releasing the extra cable required from the hook pulling through sufficient cable to thread
through the new length of boom.
6. Replace the head unit (ensuring that the cables are seated in the slot on the underside of the unit and are not pinched). Tighten
the knurled nut to secure it. Reconnect the cables and re-attach the batteries and counterweights. WARNING YOU MUST
ENSURE THAT ROUGH VELCRO ALWAYS ATTACHES TO SMOOTH VELCRO AND THAT YOUR FEET ARE NOT DIRECTLY
BELOW THE BUMP PLATE UNTIL THE VELCRO SAFETY STRAP IS SECURED.
7. Power up
8. Replace the protection cover.
9. Release the safety straps and find the new balance point.
10. Re-attach to the harness and away you go!
Transportation
If you need to transport Polecam it is not necessary to completely dismantle the system. It is possible to leave the cables threaded
through Section 1 and re-pack it into the mast bag. This enables a speedy re-rig at the new site. It is not, however, advisable to travel
long distances or ship the rig on aircraft without completely dismantling Polecam. Also when transporting Polecam on aircraft it is a
good idea to store the counterweights inside the unit bag down the side of the foam insert. This will prevent loss of the weights if the
bags are handled carelessly at the airport.

Modifying Fujinon 4mm Lens for use with Polecam
First of all make sure that the
work environment is clean.
Using an appropriate optical
screwdriver loosen 3 x
flathead retaining screws but
do not remove completely. Do
not remove the cross-head
screw as this is a locating
screw.
Remove silver C-mount ring.
Remove iris ring.
Remove and discard the small
ball bearing and spring from
the iris ring.
Re-assemble lens as before and
check that iris and focus move
freely.

Polecam Miniature Zoom Lens Calibration
Release M3 locking nut and gently unscrew CMount adapter. Add or remove spacers one at
a time. To check calibration zoom into an
object at least 1m away, focus and then zoom
out. The lens should track focus. It is easy to
see if a spacer needs to added or released by
unscrewing the whole lens thus moving it
further away from the chip. If this then
tracks focus you need to add spacers, if it gets
worse you need to remove spacers.

Polecam Miniature Zoom Lens Calibration
Once the lens is calibrated, it may be
necessary to re-align the lemo
connector. This can be done by
releasing the motors from the lens.
Undo the two locking nuts by 1/4 of a
turn, gently rotate the lens body and
then re-lock the servos.
