Introduction to
Industrial IEEE 802.11 Wireless
Industry has already accepted wireless networking as an excellent
solution for many different applications. The main advantages are the
convenience of connecting devices without relying on wired networks,
and avoiding the cost of installing wire conduits at sites where doing
so would be prohibitive.
IEEE 802.11 is not a wholesale replacement of broadband, but it is a
fast and efficient way to distribute broadband transmissions. Wireless
communication provides an easier way to connect devices, particularly
those in remote locations or critical environments.

The IEEE 802.11 standard specifies a way to use radio frequency (RF)
technology to send Ethernet packets over the air. Today’s WLANs are
based on the IEEE 802.11 standard and referred to as Wi-Fi networks.
By common agreement between regulatory agencies around the world
(FCC, ETSI, etc.), a WLAN transmits over unlicensed spectrums, with

Next Generation High Bandwidth 802.11n Solutions
Moxa’s new generation IEEE 802.11n standard allows wireless
communication speeds to theoretically reach 300 Mbps with two
spatial streams. In order to achieve 300 Mbps, the physical layer needs
to support a higher transmission speed that is at least 50 times faster
than IEEE 802.11b and 10 times faster than IEEE 802.11g. To improve
wireless communication performance, IEEE 802.11n has added more
features to its MIMO technology, where multiple antennas are used to
increase transmission speed. MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output)
is a key technology in the 802.11n standard, and offers greater signal
level and communication capacity on the transmitter side and receiver
side, respectively. By simultaneously transmitting several signals on
the same transmission frequency but over two special streams, MIMO
delivers greater range and data throughput. With improved OFDM
(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) modulation, MIMO
can use multiple carriers to transmit multiple signals that are then
combined into a single signal. This overcomes multipath fading effects
that would otherwise severely degrade received signal quality. As an
enhancement to existing 802.11 technologies, 802.11n offers a suite of
advanced new features that increase effective data throughput, extend
wireless coverage, and create more reliable networks.

Wireless Security
Wireless networks use radio waves, which means that your signal can
be intercepted by other parties. A proper protection mechanism for
radio transmissions on any network is always a concern for protocol
designers. The right balance between security, transparency, and

WDS
A Wireless Distribution System (WDS) provides an easy way for APs
to communicate wirelessly with each other. As shown in the the figure
to the right, one AP acts as a wireless access point and forwards
packets to the other AP through the WDS before the packets are sent
to the Ethernet LAN.
In addition, two or more LAN segments can be connected wirelessly.
As illustrated in the figure to the right, a pair of wireless LAN-to-LAN
bridges is used to connect two LAN segments. Since the AP is WDSenabled, it can operate in bridge mode.

STP/RSTP

Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) was designed to help reduce link failures
in a network and provide protection from loops. STP can effectively
increase system reliability to allow your network to run non-stop.
Networks that have a complicated architecture are prone to broadcast
storms caused by unintended loops in the network. STP is part of the
IEEE 802.1D standard (1998 Edition) bridge specification.
Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) implements the Spanning Tree
algorithm and protocol defined by the IEEE 802.1w-2001 standard.
RSTP is able to determine the topology of a bridged network much
more quickly than STP.
Industrial-grade Wireless LANs
Industrial environments are filled with hazards such as dust, EMI/
noise, and temperature extremes. To overcome these challenges,
Moxa’s industrial-grade outdoor wireless solutions are ruggedized
with IP68-rated housing that resists water, oil, and even corrosion
damage. In addition, Moxa’s AWK series meets or exceeds a number of
industry standards, such as EN50155 certification for rolling stock and

Client-based Turbo Roaming for Seamless Connections
IEEE 802.11 technology gives networks an effective range of only a
few hundred meters. When wireless clients are on moving objects
they need to “roam” between many wireless access points. However,
in many applications users need an uninterrupted network data
connection when the client moves from one access point to another.
Without fast roaming time, constant roaming could create frequent
handoffs and poor performance. Moxa’s proprietary Turbo Roaming
has a fast handover time of less than 100 ms. Turbo Roaming
increases the roaming speed by unifying AP channels and avoiding
wasted channel-hopping time while roaming. Moxa’s APs support
Turbo Roaming technology to provide fast seamless roaming on
wireless networks.
Long-distance Communication
IEEE 802.11 standards are not designed for outdoor use, and
generally speaking, the range of a standard 802.11 wireless network
is only 100 to 300 meters. When the distance between two wireless
devices is increased, packets sent over such a long distance can
become unstable and create a drop in network performance. The
AWK’s support for long distance communication makes it easier to

configure a long-distance solution .A proprietary algorithm developed
by Moxa can be used to determine which parameters should be used
to optimize performance. Practical uses of the algorithm include the
deployment of long-range point-to-point and point-to-multipoint

DI/DO
Moxa’s AWK devices provide a more modern wawy for system
operators to monitor remote APs with real-time alarm messages
that trigger almost instantaneously when exceptions occur. In other
words, warning messages are actively triggered in response to events
such as network and power interruptions. When integrated with other
important sensors via digital inputs (DI), the AWK can also provide
an automatic alarm mechanism. This is done by redirecting warning
messages to an IP network by email or log record.
AWK series products are also equipped with relay outputs (digital
output, DO) that can be configured to indicate the importance of events

A Virtual LAN (VLAN) is a collection of clients or hosts grouped
together as if they were attached to the broadcast domains in a Layer
2 network. Based on the SSID, two or more clients can be added
to a VLAN and grouped into the same LAN segment regardless of
geographical location. Without additional routers, you can easily
use Layer 2 switches with AWK APs and set the broadcast domain

Wireless Bridging
Moxa’s Dual-RF solution provides a “Wireless Bridge” mode which
allows the user to form a master-slave bridge mode to link other
SSIDs and extend wireless coverage. This mode is designed to

provide a faster connection and wider range than 802.11g models,
especially a noticeably stronger connection at distance. With two
independent RF modules, the AWK-5232 supports a great variety of
wireless configurations and applications, and the redundant wireless
connections increase the reliability of the entire wireless network.
The AWK-5232 is compliant with the essential sections of EN 50155,
covering operating temperature, power input voltage, surge, ESD
and vibration. The AWK-5232’s two DC power inputs increases the
power supply reliability, and it can also be powered via PoE+ for easier
deployment.

Introduction
The AWK-6222 outdoor wireless AP/bridge/client avoids interruptions

transmissions with its dual 2.4/5 GHz RF modules, which

To maximize wireless and wired network availability, the AWK6222 can incorporate Ethernet redundancy using RSTP, and power
redundancy using dual DC power inputs and PoE. In addition, the
AWK-6222 is housed in an IP68 metal casing with M12 connectors for
total protection against dust, water, vibration, and other environmental
effects. This rugged unit supports seamless roaming to achieve ultrareliable and redundant wireless networks under challenging outdoor,
mobile conditions. These industrially hardened features let you set up
a rock-solid WLAN to ensure that your entire network will always be in
service.
The AWK-6222 is compliant with the essential sections of EN 50155,

Introduction
Moxa’s wireless redundancy technology allows you to set up
independent
wireless connections to avoid interruptions in
Dual RF
transmission,
Wireless Redundancy even if interference occurs on one of the supported
frequencies. The AWK-5222 is equipped with the newest proprietary
wireless redundancy technology, which has two independent RF
modules, and supports a greater variety of wireless configurations
and applications. The redundant wireless connections increase
the reliability of the entire wireless network. The AWK-5222 is
compliant with the essential sections of EN 50155, covering operating
temperature, power input voltage, surge, ESD and vibration. The AWK5222 is rugged enough to help you establish the most robust wireless

The AWK-4121 outdoor wireless AP/bridge/client is the ideal outdoor
wireless solution for industrial applications that are hard to wire,
too expensive to wire, or use mobile equipment that connect to a
TCP/IP network. The AWK-4121’s dust-tight/weatherproof design is
IP68-rated, allowing you to extend existing wired networks to outdoor
locations and critical environments. The two redundant DC power
inputs increase the reliability of the power supply and can be powered
via PoE for easier deployment. The AWK-4131 is compliant with the
essential sections of EN 50155, covering operating temperature, power
input voltage, surge, ESD and vibration. and with so many hardened

Introduction
The AWK-1121/1127 WLAN client is ideal for industrial hard to wire
applications, keeping wireless costs under control, and integrating with
existing mobile equipment. The AWK-1121 enables WLAN connection
to Ethernet devices, while the AWK-1127 offers an additional RS232
port for serial device connectivity. The AWK-1121/1127 is rated to
operate at temperatures ranging from 0 to 60°C for standard models
and -40 to 75°C for wide temperature models, and is rugged enough
for any harsh industrial environment. Installation is easy, with either
DIN-Rail mounting or distribution boxes, and the DIN-Rail mounting
capability, wide operating temperature range, and IP30 housing with
LED indicators make the AWK-1121/1127 a convenient yet reliable
solution for any industrial wireless application.

The goal of zero-latency-roaming is to create networks that maintain
communications seamlessly as clients move from one access point

Overview
Moxa’s antennas are specifically designed for long range applications. Additional aftermarket antennas are used to extend the wireless range. Selecting
the right antenna system can greatly enhance transmission coverage and power.
This page briefly explains the differences between the two basic types of antennas: omni-directional and directional. The two types are categorized by
the direction in which they beam radio signals.
Omni-directional
Directional
Omni-directional antennas are designed to radiate signals equally in all
directions. They have very limited vertical spread, which determines
the antenna gain. Antennas of this type are typically located in the
center of open spaces or larger offices to provide even coverage to all
clients. Omni-directional antennas are the right choice for applications
that require constant location changes.
Directional antennas provide a more focused signal than omnidirectional antennas. Signals are typically transmitted in an ovalshaped pattern with a beam width of only a few degrees. With higher
gain, directional antennas can also be used outdoors to extend
point-to-point links over a longer transmission distance, or to form a
point-to-multipoint network.

Before you purchase an antenna for your wireless device, you should
check the type of antenna connector that your device uses. You will
need to buy an antenna with a matching connector. There are several
types of antenna connectors, including MCX, TNC, N-type, SMA, and
N-type (male)

RP-SMA (RP stands for “reverse polarity” or “reverse ping”). On
WLAN devices, the most commonly used antenna connectors for IEEE
802.11 applications are RP-SMA and N-type. Make sure to check the
connector type of before you buy an antenna.

Choosing the Right Antenna for Your Project
If you are planning to extend the range or widen the coverage of your wireless connection, then you may need to use external high-gain antennas for
your access points. In addition to the antenna type and gain, there are a few other specifications that you should consider.
Frequency Range
Equivalent Isotropically Radiated Power (EIRP)
The most important parameter of an antenna is its working frequency.
If you use a 2.4G antenna for IEEE 802.11a applications, you will find
that the signal is too weak and the data rate drops down to a very
low level. Be sure to use the right antenna for your planned working
frequency.
The EIRP value is defined as the power transmitted by a theoretical
isotropic antenna that distributes power evenly in all directions and
emits and produces the peak power density observed in the direction
of maximum antenna gain. Local governments control the EIRP of
radio devices under radiation/telecommunication regulations. You
must ensure that your wireless system does not exceed legal EIRP
values. The EIRP value is also used to estimate the service area of
the transmitter and to coordinate transmitters on the same frequency
so that their coverage areas do not overlap. EIRP is calculated by
measuring the power of the transmitter, losses in transmission lines
and connectors, and the gain of the antenna. The unit used for EIRP
and transmitter power is dBm, cable loss is measured in dB, and
antenna gain is expressed in dBi, relative to a (theoretical) isotropic
reference antenna.
Half-power Beam Width (HPBW)
This parameter is measured from the antenna’s radiation pattern, and
refers to the beam width at which the antenna’s radiation drops to half
of its peak value. It also refers to the antenna’s effective coverage area.
Once you get outside the half-power beam width, the signal typically
drops off very quickly. A very high-gain antenna has a very narrowangled half-power beam width, which makes the directionality high as
well.
Antenna Polarity
Polarization refers to the direction in which the electromagnetic field
lines point as energy radiates away from the antenna. The simplest and
most common type is linear polarization. When power is sent from
transmitter to receiver, only that portion of the beam with the same
polarization can be received. An improper antenna installation may
decrease performance.
