APPLICATION
NOTE
MicroComm DXI
Connecting and Using a Headset with a MicroComm DXI
Intercom Master Station
1.
Intent and Scope
This intent of this Application Note is to provide users with detailed instructions on how to connect the various
types of headsets to an IMS-440 or IMS-130/MAI-420 Master Station.
2.
Introduction
There are three different types of headsets that are commonly used. Each type has requires slightly different
procedure when connecting to an IMS Master Station.
The three types of headsets are
1.
Wireless headset system (Plantronics CS50 or equivalent)
2.
Corded headset with external amplifier module (Plantronics H-series headset and Plantronics M12 Vista
Universal Amplifier, or equivalent combination)
3.
3.
Corded Norstar-type unamplified (direct-connected) headset (Plantronics Polaris P-series or equivalent)
Procedures for Installing Headsets
Follow the instructions below for the type of headset being installed:
3.1
Wireless headset system:
1.
To ensure the DXI master station is operational, place a call to another master or to a station module.
Verify the audio is clear in both directions.
2.
Connect the wireless headset base unit to the modular headset jack located on the right side of the DXI
Intercom Master Station. Alternatively, if master audio is handled by a DXI Master Audio Interface
module, wire the base unit to the pin header labeled ‘Headset’. Consult the appropriate sections of the
DXI Technical Manual for additional information on IMS/MAI headset wiring connections.
3.
Prepare the wireless headset system for use according to the headset manufacturer’s instructions.
4.
Adjust the headset system’s ‘talk’ and ‘listen’ volume levels to be as close as possible to those
encountered when the master station’s handset is used. This step will eliminate the need to adjust the DXI
system volume settings at the master station during a call, in cases where the handset and headset are
used alternately.

5.
To activate audio through the headset, ensure the master station’s handset is on-hook. If there is still no
audio at the headset, press the ‘HEAD’ key on the master station’s keypad (‘HS’ on some older units) to
toggle from hands-free audio to headset audio.
3.2
Corded headset with external amplifier:
1.
To ensure the DXI master station is operational, place a call to another master or to a station module.
Verify the audio is clear in both directions.
2.
Connect the headset amplifier to the modular headset jack located on the right side of the DXI Intercom
Master Station. Alternatively, if master audio is handled by a DXI Master Audio Interface module, wire
the amplifier to the pin header labeled ‘Headset’. Consult the appropriate sections of the DXI Technical
Manual for additional information on IMS/MAI headset wiring connections.
3.
Prepare the headset and amplifier combination for use according to the equipment manufacturer’s
instructions. If using a Plantronics M12 Vista amplifier set its compatibility switch to position ‘4’. This
setting will provide the best audio quality and will allow the unit to operate without battery power.
4.
Adjust the headset amplifier’s ‘talk’ and ‘listen’ volume levels to be as close as possible to those
encountered when the master station’s handset is used.
3.3
Corded, unamplified headset:
1.
To ensure the DXI master station is operational, place a call to another master or to a station module.
Verify the audio is clear in both directions.
2.
Connect the headset to the modular headset jack located on the right side of the DXI Intercom Master
Station. Alternatively, if master audio is handled by a DXI Master Audio Interface module, wire the
headset to the pin header labeled ‘Headset’. Consult the appropriate sections of the DXI Technical
Manual for additional information on IMS/MAI headset wiring connections.
