Important Information about Blackboard Collaborate
1. Blackboard Collaborate is an online collaboration platform giving us virtual meeting
spaces to interact. When a meeting has been scheduled, you will receive information
from your instructor with the details giving you a link to access the space at the
appropriate time.
2. IMPORTANT: Watch the Blackboard Collaborate Web Conferencing Participant
Orientation 7-minute video (recording) to get a quick overview of the process.
3. All chats in Collaborate are supervised. Your instructor sees all comments you make to
other students through the Private Message feature.
4. Get a microphone. A headset/microphone combination is best. A webcam typically has a
built-in microphone and will work just fine. Plug in your microphone/webcam.
5. Go to www.java.com to download and install the Java Web Start. Don't worry--they
make it easy!
6. Go to the Configuration Room on the Blackboard Collaborate Checking System
Requirements. You'll test your audio here. Be sure your microphone is plugged in.

Joining a Blackboard Collaborate Session
1. Before joining a Blackboard Collaborate session, have your microphone headset/webcam
plugged in. It is recommended to use a microphone headset (or at least
headphones/earphones or an echo canceling microphone) rather than speakers. This will
eliminate potential echoing and feedback and improve your audio experience.
2. To log into your Blackboard Collaborate session, click on (or copy and paste) the link to
the Elluminate Session provided to you.
3. Type in your name and click Log In.
4. When the “Opening meeting.jnlp” window appears, click to “Open with Java…” and
click OK. Wait for Java to load. (This may take a few minutes so please be patient.)
