IEC-101
The IEC-101 protocol is originally designed for circuit-switched data links such
as conventional PSTN modem and leased lines whereas the IEC-104 takes
advantage of modern packet switched TCP/IP networks. The IEC-101 protocol
uses synchronous data polling where SCADA continuously sends requests and
devices respond. In IEC-104 protocol the devices can send events asynchronously
as they arise while SCADA performs only slow-period background scans. Another
advantage of IEC-104 is an advanced data acknowledgement mechanism.

IEC-104 allows multiple packets (and multiple events in single packet) to be
acknowledged collectively and packets are buffered until acknowledgement

and faster delivery of data, alarms and other events when the protocol conversion
feature of Arctic protocol gateway is used.
Modbus
The Modbus protocol family is a vendor-independent industrial communication
standard supported in many industrial automation control units (PLCs, RTUs, data
loggers, sensors etc.) and SCADA systems. Usually field devices use serial mode

(RTU or ASCII) protocol when the SCADA communication uses TCP/IP based
Modbus TCP protocol. The Modbus user community has defined the functionality
for a required protocol integration, how the Modbus RTU devices can talk to the
Modbus TCP SCADA system. This functionality is protocol conversion and it is
implemented in the Arctic protocol gateway. Many industrial devices like PLCs
and RTUs support RS-485 Modbus RTU mode. In RS-485 mode the Arctic can
integrate unlimited number of serial slaves to IP network (SCADA).
Arctic protocol gateways provide highly robust network components for rugged
industrial environments, ease of use, and proven long-term field operation.
If you are aiming to integrate remote serial devices (IEC-101, Modbus RTU,
DNP3) or Ethernet devices into the TCP/IP based central management system
over GPRS, 3G or 4G connection, Arctic protocol gateways are the right choice.
Arctic wireless gateways make it possible to have a cost-effective communication
system over long distances, at high data rates (up to 100Mbps) and with
integrated protocol conversion support. The protocol conversion feature means
that the IEC-101 or Modbus RTU serial devices can be attached to a modern
TCP/IP based IEC-104 or Modbus TCP SCADA System. DNP3 serial devices can
be also attached to a DNP/TCP SCADA system. In this case the local protocol
conversion is not needed but the DNP3 protocol is transferred just over TCP/IP
communication (transparent serial gateway mode).
