“We were pleasantly surprised by the fact
that, contrary to our original expectations,
we did not need to employ any additional
personnel. For the SAP systems alone we
now anticipate savings of one million euros
per year.”

OMV Solutions
SAP applications at OMV migrate from IBM mainframes
to HP’s flexible Linux platform
OMV, the largest Austrian industrial company listed on
the stock exchange, decided to map its business
processes in SAP. In order to operate these SAP systems
as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible, OMV
decided to replace its existing IBM mainframes with
Linux servers. The expected cost savings potential during
ongoing operation amounts to one million euros per
year, with high availability and flexibility included in the
package.
The project was launched in 2004 when OMV made
the strategic decision to have all IT applications run on
the Linux/Oracle operating system. At this time OMV
was running its SAP in a very complex IBM system
environment. “Back then we already had more than 60
SAP systems in use. In order to create a unified platform
for all IT applications, we thought it would make sense
to migrate SAP to Linux as well. However, the feasibility
of this project was not at all ensured at the beginning.
On the contrary - even large IT companies were very
doubtful about the whole thing,” said engineer Johann
Ehm, director of IT services at OMV Solutions, of the
initial situation. However, HP was able to show in its
subsequent bid that such a platform migration was
indeed feasible. A well-thought-out plan coupled with
profound expertise gained in numerous successfully
implemented SAP projects provided plausible evidence.
Cost reduction with full flexibility
The planned solution had to fulfill two requirements. It
had to lower operating costs and facilitate flexible,
efficient IT operation. “It was clear that the new Linux
environment would reduce hardware and software
costs.” continues Ehm. “We were pleasantly surprised by
the fact that, contrary to our original expectations, we
did not need any additional personnel. For the SAP
systems alone we now anticipate savings of one million
euros per year.”
Equally important were the much more flexible options
for expanding the IT system. “OMV is a rapidly growing
company. The new Linux platform will meet the
requirements of continuous growth very well,” said
Wolfgang Egger, the manager of the HP’s Server
Business Unit (SBU), in explaining the additional
advantages of the new system.
Trouble-free migration on schedule and within budget
The previous mainframe environment has been
undergoing a three-phase transformation into a flexible
infrastructure. The most complex part - the set-up of the
new system and monitoring, management and the
mechanisms for ‘cloning’ all of the SAP systems - has
already been implemented, and the actual migration is
going so well that it will be completed sooner than
originally scheduled. HP’s key account manager, Helmut
Maar, believes the reason for the success to date is the
excellent teamwork among OMV Solutions, HP and the
2
migration partner, X-IT. “From the beginning, the
platform change was seen as a great opportunity by the
OMV Solutions staff members. This positive attitude and
professionalism of all those involved was the basis of this
outstanding co-operation.”
Ehm found the initial results extremely positive as well.
As all company processes in Germany and abroad run
on SAP, high availability had to be ensured. Thus OMV
operates a cluster via two redundant computer centres at
separate locations in Vienna. HP provides its proven
ServiceGuard solution, which is fully certified by SAP, for
the clusters on the Linux platform as well. Despite all the
challenges, HP was able to implement everything as
planned, thus proving the feasibility of the project, which
was greatly doubted by various parties in the
beginning. “The performance, that is, the speed of the
applications on Linux, is more than satisfactory,” says
Ehm.
Hardware and services in one package
HP functioned as a system provider, supplying both
hardware and services for the new SAP infrastructure,
which is also supported by automation. The core of the
new platform consists of four HP Integrity rx8620 servers
with 16/32 Itanium2 processors as database servers
and a series of rx1620/2620s with Itanium2 processors
as application servers. Two new EVA8000 Storage
models and the use of the HP MC ServiceGuard cluster
software ensure optimal protection against failure and
ease of operation. During the migration HP took on full
organisational and technical responsibilities, from the
set-up of the infrastructure to completion of the project.
Furthermore, a critical service agreement has already
been concluded for the next four years: HP guarantees
that in the event of a hardware problem, normal
operation will be restored within six hours. OMV is also
well-supported with regards to software. Thanks to the
critical services for SAP applications, both companies SAP and HP - are jointly available to remedy any
malfunctions that may arise reducing the time required
to restore service. According to Ehm, HP’s innovative
price model with performance-based components for
services is also a success. Supported in this fashion,
OMV is fully prepared for the future and for further
company expansion.
