Today, it is increasingly more and more common to want full control over your own lighting system.

You don’t just want to turn the lights on/off and dim individual groups - you want to be able to take full control of the lighting throughout the office, the restaurant or your home.

Control can mean that you want to pre-set the lighting levels in different zones. For example when you arrive home or to the office you want to be able already at the entrance to set the dimming levels in different zones with one button.

And on the way out you simply want to turn off all the lighting/scenarios at the entrance. This is an example of a so-called scenario function and this is just a small part of what is possible to create with different lighting control systems.

With a DALI system you get centralized control, while allowing the user to exercise control through local interfaces such as e.g. retractive switches in a room.

The EDL system

Vadsbo’s EDL system consists of a selection of components making it possible to build a DALI system with the basic lighting control functions for LED lighting in a simple and user-friendly way.

The main components of the system is the LED control gear LCC60MCM that controls and dims the most common LED types on the market and the Multi Control Module Push MCMP that controls and regulates all 0-10Vdc or 1-10Vdc controlled devices such as LED drivers, electronic ballasts etc .

These can, together with the other control modules in the EDL system, be regulated via DALI using momentary switches, presence detectors or via push buttons that can easily be programmed with different scenarios.

Manual control by push-button and DALI control module

The simplicity of the EDL

Usually DALI actors needs to be pre-set and configured via a computer interface.

This means that you, from the start, have no control of what address a specific actor gets or where it´s located. The experience can also be that it is difficult to set.

Vadsbo has therefor provided both LCC60MCM and MCMP with manual setting options of both the address and the group. The setting is done via 3 small knobs. 1 for group (0-15) and 2 for the address (0-63).

Likewise the control modules are manually set.

Easy manual adjustment of EDL the components

This makes the EDL system easy to install and to set manually, without having to use a computer with advanced software.

You get a precise control over where each address is placed in the installation and you will not need to identify and control this in retrospect. You can of course create address and group with a software from a PC if desired.

DALI

A DALI system communicates digitally via two bus- conductors and consists of a set of commands to control drivers centrally. DALI based digital control systems have traditionally been used for dimming of fluorescent lamps or dimming of

12V lamps or bulbs and occur more now also for LED control gears.

A DALI bus is polarity dissolved so it does not matter how you use the cables.

DALI is not a double-insulated technology (not SELV) which means that the two control wires must be of standard installation cable (250V).

It is therefore beneficial to install the control cables with the other 230 line/ cables.

For example a 5 control wire can be used for the wiring of phase, neutral and ground. The two additional wires are used for the DALI bus. The maximum length of a DALI bus is 300 meters with a 1,5mm2 cable.

All devices in the form of controls and actuators are then connected to the same

DALI bus. Each unit consumes a certain amount of power from the bus. It is e.g. common for an actuator (e.g. a LED-driver) to consume about 2mA and a control module usually consumes about 6mA from the DALI bus.

In order to power the connected unit, you need to connect it to the bus.

It is common for a DALI power supply unit to deliver up to 125 or 250mA where250mA is the maximum current allowed in a single system. DALI voltage is between 9,5-22,4V.

Adressering och Groupering

In a DALI system you set a specific address for each actor, which means that from the bus you can communicate and control the individual actuator with control unit you require. You can also set different groups. When you then control the specific group you control all the actors involved in the same group.

Scenarios

Each actor can store different positions in an internal memory, so-called scenarios that can easily be activated.

An example:

Control gear A - 10% dimming stored in memory 1

Control gear B - off mode is stored in memory 1

Control gear C - Max light level is stored in memory 1

If you then send a command to the DALI bus to activate memory 1, all units, regardless of the current mode, will set the mode that is saved in memory 1.

Control gear A - 10% dimming

Control gear B - off mode

Control gear C - Max light level

The scenario memory is used to set different dimming levels or for example to turn off all the lights via a simple push.

A DALI bus can handle up to 64 pieces of individual addresses, 16 groups and 16 scenarios.

Components

The basic components for LED control are included in

EDL and are displayed on pages 3-5.

DALI operating units

Multi control module MCMP (V-40010DCMCMP)

MCMP is a box actuator for DALI / DMX 0/1-10V and provides common 0-10 or 1-10V dimmable units such as LED drivers or electronic ballasts for fluorescent lamps with DALI and DMX control. Setting 0-10 or

1-10 V can be set directly on the unit. You can also set with DALI commands via a computer.

MCMP can be controlled directly by a momentary switch and can be placed in an appliance box.

Address and group is manually adjusted via 3 knobs.

It is automatically detected if a DALI or DMX signal is connected and therefor the same knobs for both DALI and DMX setting are used.

This means that it is suitable for both the smaller and simpler system and the larger advanced system where you want to set and control it all via a PC.

MCMP is also able to break the phase or to turn on/off the units that are dimmable with 1-10Vdc. The relay is of bi stable type, which means that the relay only draws power when changing mode

(on / off).

This means that it does not develop any heat in the relay function, and the relay retains its setting even after a power failure.

LCC60MCM (V-36060579MCM)

LCC60MCM is a LED control gear with a total power of 60W divided into two outputs up to 30W each.

Each output is adjustable via DIP switches for constant current 350, 500, 700 and 900mA respectively constant voltage 12 and 24Vdc.

You can set the outputs to control various loads.

LCC60MCM has both DALI bus and DMX input and can be controlled directly by a momentary switch or

1-10V controls.

Each output will have its own address in a DALI or DMX system and can be controlled individually.

Address and Group are easily set manually via 3 knobs.

It’s automatic detection if DALI signal or DMX signal is connected and thus the same knobs are used for both

DALI and DMX setting. If DALI signal is detected the knobs are used to set the DALI Address and Group and if DMX signal is detected knobs are used to set the

DMX Address.

Of course a computer can be used to set DALI Address and Group if desired.

This means that EDL is suitable for both the smaller and simpler system and the larger advanced system where you want to set and control it all via a PC.

Multi Control Module Push MCMP and CMP 0/1-10Vdc

Multi Control module MCMP

MCMP (V-40010DCMCMP) is a box actuator for DALI

/ DMX to 0-10 or 1-10V and supplies commonly 0-10 or 1-10V dimmable devices such as e.g. LED drivers or electronic ballasts for fluorescent lamps with DALI and

DMX control. MCMP can also be controlled directly by a momentary switch and can be placed in a wall box.

Features

Setting 0-10 or 1-10 V can be set directly on the unit.

You can also set up with DALI commands via a computer.

MCMP is also able to break phase to turn on or off the unit that is dimmable with 1-10Vdc. The relay is of bi stable type, which means that the relay only draws power when changing mode (on/off).

This means that it does not develop any heat in the relay function and the relay retains its settings even after a power failure.

CMP 0/1-10Vdc

Control Module Push (V-40010DCP) provides all units that have 0-10 or 1-10Vdc control with push dimmer function. The device is made in box shape and can easily be placed in a wall box behind a push button.

Push dimming

Push dimming has several advantages in terms of easy, fast and easy dimming. A short press for on / off, a long press for dimming up or down. Push dimming is also convenient for the user who can control the light level in a room from several different locations in the room - more switches can regulate the same push dimmer.

Large grouper

You can easily provide a large group of for example

LED drivers that is controlled with 1-10Vdc with quick and easy push dimming which also can be dimmed from several locations unlike traditional 1-10Vdc dimmers in rotary knob format.

Compatibility

0/1-10Vdc is a coherent system and if the control gear is designed for 0/1-10Vdc it works regardless of manufacturer.

There are no compatibility problems as in the case of leading- and trailing edge dimming or minimum starting power. In other words, if you select 0/1-10-

Vdc dimmer switch and 0/1-10Vdc LED drivers it works regardless of manufacturer.

Features

CMP regulates common 0-10Vdc or 1-10Vdc dimmable devices such as e.g. LED drivers and electronic ballasts.

Ability to break phase exists to turn on or off the devices that are dimmable with 1-10Vdc. The relay is of bi stable type, which means that the relay only draws power when changing mode (on / off).

This means that it does not develop any heat in the relay function and the relay retains its settings even after a power failure.

Multi Control Module Push MCMP and CMP 0/1-10Vdc EDL - Components - Control modules

pushDOT (V-42PUDOT) pushDOT is an interface between a normal retractive switch and the DALI bus. 4 switches can be connected and each button get the function to dim up/down, or on/off. pushDOT can be set to control up to 4 individual units, groups or all units on the DALI bus. Setting is done manually via a knob on the backside.

switchDOT (V-40SWDOT) switchDOT enables dimming up and down and is an interface between an ordinary momentary switch and

DALI bus and can easily be placed in a wall box. You can for example connect a crown switch to the control module and a button dims up or switches on while the second button dims down or turns off.

switchDOT can be installed to control an individual unit, a group of units or all units on the DALI bus.

Setting is done manually with knobs.

motionDOT (V-42MODOT) motionDOT is an interface between a standard presence sensor or motion detector and DALI bus. The time delay is controlled by the motion detector.

When presence is detected the lighting activates to

100% and in the case of absence stand-by mode is activated. Standby mode can be adjusted from fully off to 75% brightness. motionDOT can be set to control a group of devices or all devices on the DALI bus. Setting is done manually with a knob.

sceneDOT (V-42SCDOT) sceneDOT enables the function to store and recall up to 4 scenarios (home, away, cleaning, etc.).

4 buttons can be connected to the module, one for each scenario. For optimal results a 4-channel low volt switch is preferable.

The scenarios are easily stored in each scenario button by holding the button down for about 10 seconds. sceneDOT can easily be placed in a wall box.

To memorize e.g. ”Away scenario” on button 1, you first turn off all the lights with each unit’s individual control. When all the lights are off, press and hold the button 1 for 10 seconds. Stored scenario is confirmed by all lights flashing.

Setting of only a specific group or if all units on the bus will store scenarios is done manually with a knob. You can also set which Memory Position (of 16 possible) that each button corresponds to.

Power supply DALI bus

busDOT (V-30125DALI) busDOT is a power unit for DALI bus and can deliver up to 125mA. A control gear for example consumes up to 2mA and a control module max 6mA.
