THE FUTURE IS CARBON
GEOMETRY SERIES
THE FUTURE IS CARBON
// Clever officially starts here: Wilson Benesch class the Tactic II as a ‘multirole’ drive unit,
rather like a multirole combat aircraft like a Dassault Rafale, but with fewer hard-points and
gun platform options.
That last line wasn’t as throwaway as it might have first seemed, because Dassault – the
group that includes the makers of the French fighter – developed the 3D CAD/CAM
software that Wilson Benesch uses in the development of all its products... When you look
at the design of the company’s speakers, you can see precisely why that design program is
money well spent. - Alan Sircom, HiFi+, Issue 130
To owners and long-term admirers of the
Wilson Benesch brand, the new Discovery II
loudspeaker will perhaps feel familiar, replacing
as it does, the original award-winning Odyssey
Series design. That design won ‘Reference
Loudspeaker’ in What HiFi? Magazine over
two consecutive years in 2004 and 2005, along
with a clutch of other awards including the
Stereo Sound Japan ‘Component of the Year’.
The new Discovery II thus has all the pedigree
of a classic.
DRIVE TECHNOLOGY
The Discovery II is equipped with very
latest, cutting edge Wilson Benesch’s drive
technologies. Driving from the heart of the
loudspeakers are a total of six Tactic II drivers
and two Semisphere tweeters per pair. The
principle topology of the original design is
retained, placing the innovative clamshell
Isobaric Drive System in the underside of
the enclosure with a tweeter and dedicated
midrange drive unit sitting in close proximity
directly above. It is this compact and highly
optimised drive topology, to which the
Discovery II and indeed its larger sibling,
the Endeavour, owe their stunning sonic
presentation.
SEMISPHERE TWEETER
At the centre of the Discovery II is the crown
jewel of the Geometry Series. The Semisphere
Silk-Carbon
Hybrid
Dome
Technology
Tweeter is a revolutionary, wide bandwidth
tweeter. It features six-axially mounted NdFeB
magnets sandwiched between precision CNC
machined front and back plate. A metallic
chassis holds captive the silk-carbon dome,
which produces a natural, open sound. The
strength of the design is its capacity to create
high resolution sound, with the total absence
of any sibilant, fatiguing characteristics
commonly experienced with hard dome
technologies. Designed in parallel with the
Wilson Benesch Tactic II drive unit, the units
integrate seamlessly.
ISOBARIC DRIVE
Two downwards-firing Tactic II drive units
form the Discovery II’s Isobaric Drive System.
Unlike the Cardinal, this is deployed in a
clamshell configuration. The primary goal of
the Isobaric Drive is the creation of lightning
fast, dynamic, deep bass, produced from a
relatively compact drive system. The Isobaric
technology is another critical element in the
success of the Discovery II design. It is a direct
alternative to large woofer designs, which
are inherently slow and unable to match the
Isobaric Drive in terms of dynamics. As a result
the Isobaric Drive is able to remain perfectly
integrated with the midrange Tactic II Driver.
What is also unquestionably unique in the
Discovery II and its larger sister, the Endeavour,
is the proximity of the Isobaric Drive System
to the mid-range and tweeter drivers. In this
respect, the designs have a distinct advantage
over many loudspeakers, achieving a degree
of spatial and temporal integration that is
perhaps unrivalled across the industry.
MATERIAL SCIENCE R&D
The Advanced Composite Technology (A.C.T.)
Monocoque, which forms the principal
component of the Discovery II’s cabinet is the
result of more than twenty-five years’ research
into emerging carbon fibre composite
materials and the complex manufacturing
methods required to integrate them within
product design.
Although carbon fibre is renowned for its high
strength-to-weight ratio, the material property
of primary concern in the Endeavour cabinet is
its damping coefficient; its ability to dissipate
energy in a controlled manner. Employing
this material property of carbon fibre in an
optimised U-shaped geometry, the damping
capacity of the A.C.T. Monocoque significantly
surpasses that of a cabinet constructed using
conventional materials.
GEOMETRY AND FORM
Whilst the Discovery II clearly references a
classic design of the past, the aesthetic retains
a high-tech, classic feel. The Geometry Series
cues pertain throughout the design; the solid
alloy baffle with its characteristic machined
finishing; the luxurious new top design with
its inset black gloss finishing; the highly
engineered adjustable hand wheels; and the
recessed terminal plate underside the foot,
this is a Geometry Series thoroughbred.
Finished in a range of bespoke wood veneers
or high gloss finishes, which complement the
slick, high-tech carbon fibre monocoque. The
Discovery II exudes style. It is a stand mount
British high-end luxury loudspeaker, peerless
in its class.
