Congratulations!
Thank you for the confidence you have shown by purchasing the SmartNOVA Digital Babycall,
model SMN1. SmartNOVA is a 100% digital, quality product, developed for the safety of your child
and for your peace of mind. The devices are equipped with NOVA's unique CARE (Cordless
Anti-Radiation Environment) technology, which precludes any risk of pulsing radiation. The CARE
technology automatically chooses a channel and if interference occurs the devices switch to a free
channel. It is important to realise that an electronic baby monitor does not relieve the parents of
their responsibility to care for the child. It is a practical accessory which makes your daily life more
secure. Please read these instructions carefully and keep them for future reference. Alternatively
visit our website www.novababy.com.
Quick start
1. The devices come with the battery cover separate to make it easier to
install the battery. Install the battery (15) and fit the battery cover (14).
2. To open the battery cover (14) apply a finger nail or slim object to the
grooves on the upper side of the device and pull back the cover.
3. Plug an adapter (16) into each device and charge until the yellow
charging indicator (12) goes out. This normally takes 5-6 hours. The
devices can be used during charging, but the charging process will
take longer.
4. Place the baby unit and the charging lead out of reach of the child.
The front of the unit should face towards the child.
5. Switch on the devices by holding down the On/Off button (A1 and B1)
for two-three seconds. The devices acknowledge with a beep. The
parent unit displays the set volume by showing one to four red lights in
the sound indicator (B11) for aprox. one second. Test communication
between the devices by whistling into the baby unit. If a high-pitched
sound occurs you can move the baby monitor further away or press
the button (B5) several times.
6. If you have any problems, read the troubleshooting guide carefully
before you contact your dealer. This will provide answers to most
questions.

Displays the charge level of the battery in the parent unit. Flashes when the battery is flat,
at the same time as an audible warning
ac Indication of the temperature around the baby unit. May ALWAYS display a higher
temperature when the baby unit is charging or when the device is frequently activated.
Displays temperature from -9 °C to +45 °C. The symbol flashes if the temperature falls
below -9 °C or goes above 45 °C.
Flashes when the range is unstable. Gives an audible warning signal if contact between
the devices is lost. See under Alarms below.
Flashes and gives an audible warning if the battery in the baby unit is flat.
Alarm: Every audible warning at the parent unit is accompanied by a light and a flashing
symbol on the display (B6), showing the reason for the warning. Pressing any button
cancels the audible alarm. The symbol continues to flash until the fault has been put right.
The baby unit produces no audible signals. This is intentional.
Range: If — — flashes on the display (B6) and contact cannot be re-established you are warned by
an audible signal for safety reasons. This may happen for short periods even if the devices are not
faulty. Walls, especially concrete ones, and having the devices on different floors of a building, may
significantly reduce the range. It may help to move the parent unit slightly, since radio signals are
reflected from objects, people, etc. Sheet metal (in car, caravan, etc) prevents signal reception. This
means that there will be areas where communication is not possible even over short distances.

Detailed instructions
SmartNOVA uses NOVA's unique CARE technology, which gives an interference-free connection
and automatic channel selection WITHOUT exposing the child to strong pulsing radiation, unlike
DECT-based baby monitors.
SmartNOVA gives off only 2% of the radiation of a DECT device, and if SmartNOVA is set to short
range, only 1.3% of the radiation of an "ECO DECT" baby monitor. However, it is the pulsing
radiation from DECT/ECO DECT which, according to increasing numbers of researchers, is critical
for the nervous system, especially for babies, who absorb twice as much radiation per kilo of body
weight compared with an adult.

1. Switch on dimmable night light.
Press the (A) button (A2). The night light (A5) has the following sequence when the
button is pressed repeatedly: Low — medium — bright — off.
2. Check battery level
Press and hold the (Y) button (A2) for three seconds. The night light (A5) flashes 1 to 4
times to show the battery level. One flash equals low and four flashes equals full battery.
3. Sensitivity adjustment
Press the @ button (A3) or the (3) button (A4) to increase/decrease the sensitivity.
= The baby unit has four levels and indicates by one to four beeps the level that is set at
= each press. The factory setting is four (max. sensitivity).
=] 4. Transmission power selection
| If the distance between the devices is very short, the transmission power can be
| reduced by 90% by setting switch (A10) in the battery compartment to “short”.
This reduces the line-of-sight range by about 50%, but for indoor use the range
will be reduced by 50-100%. This must therefore be determined by trial and error.
There is not necessarily anything wrong with the devices if they lose contact even
if they are in the same room. The transmission power must then be set to "long”,
which is the factory setting.

Using the batteries
The baby unit should be charged in the upright position to ensure optimum ventilation during
charging. The devices are charged by plugging in the adapters supplied. The yellow charging
indicator (12) is lit during charging. The batteries can be safely charged at any time.
NOTE: Rechargeable batteries are consumable items and gradually deteriorate in use. If the
devices are to be stored for a long time, the batteries should be removed to prevent them becoming
excessively discharged. The batteries should be half-charged before storage.
General
A hanger strap (17) is supplied. This can be used to suspend the devices, for example to hang the
baby unit on the child's pram. It is a good idea to use a thread to pull the thin loop through the hole
(11) in the device.
SmartNOVA is a 100% digital product. If the range is exceeded, the sound may be broken up before
the connection is lost. If interference occurs on the current channel, the devices switch automatically
to a free channel. If no interference-free channel is available, the devices will not be able to
re-establish communication immediately. If this happens, try switching the devices off and on again
when they are about 1 to 2 metres from each other. If this does not help, try resetting them as follows:
Both units must be powered off
Wa 1. Hold down the (B5) and On/Off (B1) buttons on the parent unit at the same
> , time. Release the On/Off button but continue to hold down the button when you
= hear a beep. When the second LED from left in the sound indicator starts to flash,
release the button.
lo
2. Hold down the (A4) and On/Off (A1) buttons on the baby unit at the same time.
Release the On/Off button but continue to hold down the (35 button when you hear
a beep. When the power indicator (A6) flash one time, release the button.

В 3. Switch both units off and on again. The connection is now re-established.
Warranty
The warranty period is two years from the date of purchase. The warranty covers faults arising
within two years of the purchase of the device, provided that the device does not show signs of
physical damage indicating harsh treatment. Broken plastic parts, a cracked display, moisture
damage and other damage caused by the user are not covered by the warranty.
Any claim must be accompanied by a detailed description of the fault. Avoid expressions such as
"does not work", "only works occasionally” and so on. The batteries are not covered by the
warranty, since rechargeable batteries are a consumable item and their life depends on how they
are used.
An administration fee may be charged if:
a) You make a claim on a fault-free product (i.e. if you did not read this user manual).
b) The description of the fault is missing or incomplete.
C) Your claim relates to the batteries and devices were sent in without this being agreed in advance.
NOTE: Mobile phones may prevent communication between the devices if placed too close to one
of the devices.

Reset both devices (see the General
section of the instructions).
When the child cries, the sound indi-
cator does not light up or it takes too
long before you hear the child.
The sensitivity of the baby unit is
set too low.
The baby unit is too far away from
the child.
Adjust the sensitivity to maximum (A3).
Move the baby unit closer to the child.
The sound breaks up or is distorted.
The devices occasionally lose
contact.
The devices are too far apart.
Local conditions/interference.
Reduce the distance.
Set the switch (A10) to “Long”.
Make sure that mobile phones are
located well away from the devices.
There is not much that can be done
about local conditions.
The devices are unlikely to be faulty.
High-pitched sound.
The devices are too close
together.
The volume is turned up too high.
Short range.
The range switch (A10) is set to
“Short”.
Local conditions.
Increase the distance between the
devices.
Reduce the volume.
Set the switch (A10) to “Long”.
Other baby monitor systems close by
may drastically reduce the range. Try
moving the parent unit or the baby unit.
The stated range only applies outdoors
with a clear line of sight between the
devices. Walls and floors may reduce the
range by 50-100%.
Parent unit beeps.
This tells you to check the display.
The display shows the cause with
a flashing symbol.
The temperature is not displayed or
the displayed temperature is
incorrect.
The temperature reading will be
too high during batteries are
charging because the batteries
get warm.
The openings (A9) are covered.
Stand the baby unit upright. This gives
the most accurate temperature reading.
Position the baby unit so that air can
flow freely around it. Accuracy +2 “C.
