Introduction
Purpose
IMPORTANT! This Technical Bulletin is for informational purposes only. No action is required
on your part. The Vista Palette™ Imagizer USB Key is only for Strand Lighting Palette™ Processors running Microsoft Windows® Vista operating systems. For earlier operating systems, follow
Strand Lighting Technical Bulletin SLTB-004 or contact Strand Lighting Technical Support at
1.214.647.7880.
The Vista Palette™ Imagizer USB Key is used to re-image/restore Palette™ or Light Palette™
console processors (running Microsoft Windows® Vista operating systems) to original factory
condition. The Vista Palette™ Imagizer USB Key will completely erase, format, and reprogram
the hard drive in the Palette™ Console processor. This has proven useful in solving a wide range
of errors and failures.
WARNING: It is important to backup all show files and data onto a separate USB drive or
computer (independent of the Palette™ Console processor).

This technical bulletin only addresses Strand Lighting Palette™ Consoles using the following
processors (with Microsoft Windows® Vista operating systems):

Procedure
To re-image/restore Palette™ Console processors (2-258004-040 or 2258004-050 only) to original factory settings using a Vista Palette™ Imagizer
USB Key:
WARNING: Before proceeding, please note that the Vista Palette™ Imagizer USB Key will completely erase, format, and reprogram the hard drive in the Palette™ Console processor. This has
proven useful in solving a wide range of errors and failures. It is important to backup all show
files and data onto a separate USB drive or computer (independent of the Palette™ Console processor).
Step
1. Boot processor, close Palette™ software to access the Control Panel.
IMPORTANT! Please follow next step closely. You must have this IP address to enter it after
restoring Palette™ processor to factory settings.
Step
2. At Control Panel, open System tab, and go to Configure Network. At Configure
Network, make note/record Processor’s established IP address.
Step
3. At Processor, remove channel key and insert Vista Palette™ Imagizer USB Key into
Port 1 on USB hub.
Step
4. Restart Processor. Note, If you have an Internet connection, make sure it is connected
before restarting processor.
Step
5. Press and hold [Delete] key on keyboard
when Digital Engine logo or the
American Megatrend Logo appears
during processor booting. The Main BIOS
Setup Screen should appear. If not, repeat
Steps 4 and 5 until Main BIOS Setup
Screen appears as shown in Figure 1.

Step
6. At Main BIOS Setup Screen, go to Boot Menu and select Hard Disk Drives. 1st Drive
and 2nd Drive should be visible. Make sure 1st Drive is "USB: Generic Flash Disk" as
shown in Figure 2. If it is not, repeat Steps 3 through 5.

7. Hit [ESC] and select "Boot Device Priority". "1st Boot Device" should read, "USB:
Generic Flash Disk" as shown in Figure 3. If so, hit [F10] to save configuration and
Exit. After exiting, "Windows is loading files..." then "Microsoft Corporation" (with
status bar) should appear.

8. As illustrated in Figure 3, the following will happen:

a. A command prompt "Please wait, initializing" will appear.
b. After approximately 90 seconds, a WARNING page will appear.

Step
9. Type "yes" and hit [Enter] to continue.
Step 10. A process begins to set up the disk, format disk partitions, and expands files on
Processor disk from files located in Vista Palette™ Imagizer USB Key. This process
will last approximately 5 minutes.

Step 11. As shown in Figure 6, when "Successfully Applied image" text appears, press [Enter]
before removing Vista Palette™ Imagizer USB Key.

Step 12. A blue screen will appear on the desktop. When screen is blank, remove Vista Palette™
Imagizer USB Key. The system will reboot the processor from the newly formatted hard
drive.
Step 13. At start up, select (by using the keyboard’s arrow keys), "Start Windows Normally"
from the screen selections as shown in Figure 3. Once "Start Windows Normally" is
highlighted, hit [Enter].

Step 14. If Windows Activation screen appears (as illustrated in Figure 8) select and click
"Activate later".

Step 15. After Processor begins to boot, it will automatically find and install drivers. When the
drivers are found and installed, a prompt will appear to restart Processor. Click "Restart
Now" and wait for reboot to finish.

Step 16. Insert the Vista Imagizer USB key.
Step 17. If asked, click "Continue Without Scanning."
Step 18. Open folders to View Files.

Step 19. Locate file called "DoubleClickToFinish" and double click on it. A DOS window will
appear and a process will start to set an IP address for the processor. IMPORTANT! Do
not hit [Enter] until the network location box has been finalized.

Step 20. A dialog box will open to begin the process of selecting and setting network parameters.
a. As show in Figure 11, at "Select a location for the Network 2 network", click on
"Work".
b. After the network location has been successfully set, close dialog window and click
"Enter". Click "Enter" only once and wait for dialog window to completely close.

c. A dialog window will appear saying that the product key has been successfully
uninstalled. Click "OK" on this window.

Step 21. A DOS dialog box will appear and request the Windows product key. This key is located
on a label on top of the Palette™ Processor. Enter the Windows product key as
prompted in DOS dialog box as shown in Figure 13.

Note: Enter the Windows product key in the DOS dialog box with [Caps Lock] On and type the
dashes ("-") between the 5 character sets. After successfully entering the Windows product key,
you will receive verification as illustrated in Figure 14.

Step 22. A Windows Activation dialog box will appear as shown in Figure 15.

Note: You have several options to choose from to activate Windows - (A) If you have an internet
connection to the console, you can choose "Activate Windows online now". (B) Activation via
telephone if you do not have an internet connection at the processor. To activate over the phone,
choose "Show me other ways to activate" then, "use the automated phone system".
a. To activate using an internet connection, do the following. To activate via telephone,
go directly to Step b.
1) Click on "Activate Windows online now".
2) A dialog box will appear.

3) After successful completion of the online Windows Activation, a confirmation
dialog box will appear.

4) Close confirmation dialog box. the DOS dialog box will appear.

b. To activate using telephone service, do the following. To activate via internet, refer
to Step a.
1) Click on "Show me other ways to activate" as illustrated in Figure 15.
2) Click on "Use automated phone system". You will supply a location and a
telephone number will be displayed to call.

3) After obtaining an activation code, entering it in the Telephone Windows Activation Dialog Box, a confirmation dialog box will appear.

4) Close confirmation dialog box. the DOS dialog box will appear.
Step 23. If Windows activated successfully, press [Enter].
Note: If you got an activation error, or did not activate Windows, type NO and press [Enter]. This
will allow you to begin the activation process again starting from Step 19.

Step 24. Two update dialog boxes will appear as shown in Figure 20. Click "OK" on both dialog
boxes.

Note: After clicking OK on each box, various DOS dialog boxes will appear. These boxes are
alerting you that drivers and files are being installed.
If a Windows security alert box appears, click "Install this driver software anyway".

Step 25. After installation is complete, a dialog box will appear to ask to shutdown the Console.
Click "OK".

Step 26. After the processor has completely shut down, remove Vista Palette™ Imagizer USB
Key and install Palette™ Channel Key.
Step 27. Restart console.
Step 28. Palette™ console will boot using Palette™ software. Close Palette™ software to access
Control Panel.
Step 29. Go to System tab and select Configure Network.
Step 30. Deselect "dhcp" and set IP address by entering previous IP Address recorded in Step 2.
Step 31. Console is now reformatted and ready for use.
Note: To keep your console key up-to-date, when new software versions are released, you can
download them from the Strand Lighting web site at www.strandlighting.com. Download update,
change the file name to Paletteinstall.exe, and put it on the Vista Palette™ Imagizer USB Key
(replacing the existing file).
