1998, BSEN 54-4: 1998, BSEN 54-5: 2001,

via their approval system.

Risk A s s e s s m e n t
In order to aid identification of the source of a possible
fire, the protected building should be divided into
‘zones’. When deciding on a suitable zoning scheme for
a building, consideration should be given to the size, any
existing fire routines, escape routes, zone accessibility,
and structural fire compartmentation.

Information
The ‘Fire precautions (Workplace) Regulations’ require any
business employing five or more persons to hold a written
‘Fire Risk Assessment’ and ‘Emergency Plan’. This must be
periodically reviewed.
The local fire brigade can enforce compliance, and close
any building that does not meet this act.
In the event of a fire in a building without a written ‘Fire
Risk Assessment’, those responsible may face fines and
imprisonment, and/or private litigation.

• Complete a fire risk assessment for your work place
(considering all employees, the public, disabled people
and people with special needs).
• Identify and record any significant findings or persons at
risk.
• Provide and maintain fire precautions.
• Provide information, instruction and training.
• Nominate persons responsible to implement your
emergency plan.
• Consult employees about the above nominations and
your proposals to improve fire precautions.
• Inform other employees who may have work places
in the building about any significant risks which may
affect their safety and co-operate with them to reduce/
control these risks.
• If you are not an employer, but control premises which
contain more than one workplace, you are responsible
for complying with fire regulations.
• You must establish a suitable means of contacting the
emergency services.
• Your employees must co-operate to ensure the
workplace is safe from fire and its effects.
The following guide lines should
be observed:
• If the total floor area of the building is less than
300m2 then the building needs only one zone,
regardless of the number of storeys.
If the total floor area is greater
than 300m 2 :
• The maximum area for a zone is 2000m2
• If a stairwell (or similar) extends beyond one floor it
should be a separate zone.
• If a zone covers more than one fire compartment
then the zone boundaries should follow the
compartment boundaries.
• The search distance within the zone in order to
ascertain the position of the fire should not exceed
60m. Remember that the use of Remote Indicator
lamps may help to reduce the distance travelled.
• If a building is divided between occupiers, zones
must not be shared between them.
Manual Call Points
A ‘Manual Call Point’ is a device which enables personnel
to raise an alarm in the event of a fire incident by pressing
a frangible element to activate the alarm system.
Manual Call Points should be installed at a height of
1.4m above floor level at easily accessible, conspicuous
positions, on exit routes, at the entry floor landings of
staircases and at all exits to the open air.
Manual Call Points should be spaced so that one may
always be found within a maximum distance of 30m
apart.
Automatic Detectors
When deciding on the type of detector to be used in
any area it is important to remember that the detector
has to discriminate between a genuine fire and the
normal conditions existing therein.

Detection In Apex Roofs
In open spaces under flat horizontal ceilings, every point
should lie within 7.5m of a smoke detector.
if the ceiling is pitched or sloping, smoke will tend to rise
towards the highest point (apex) of the roof, therefore
detection should be placed in the apex. As the slope
tends to reduce the delay before smoke or heat reaches
the detectors, it is permissible to use a greater spacing
between the detectors mounted there.
Smoke detection should be generally avoided in the
following areas to avoid unwanted alarms. They should
be protected by means of other detectors such as heat
detectors.
Contamination in dusty areas may cause unwanted
alarms and reduce the life of the detector.
Damp or humid conditions such as showers, bathrooms
and external areas should be avoided as the water
vapour may cause unwanted alarms and reduce the life
of the detector.
Detectors should not be mounted where gases, vapours
or fumes are present.
Detectors should never be used at low temperature where
ice or condensation can affect detector sensitivity.
Fire Alarm Sounders
Fire Alarm Sounders should be installed throughout the
building with an even distribution, to generally provide
a minimum sound level of 65dB(A) or 5dB(A) above any
background noise which is likely to persist for more than
30 seconds.
Where the alarm may have to arouse sleeping persons e.g.
Hotel bedrooms, nursing homes, etc, a minimum sound
level of 75dB(A) is required, at the bed head with all the
doors shut.
Kitchens, garages, welding shops and boiler houses
should generally be avoided.
All fire alarm sounders in a building should produce the
same sound, distinct from any other audible warning
devices in the building.

Where fire alarm sounders are required in extremely noisy
areas e.g. Machine shops, it may be necessary to install
additional ‘Visual Indication Beacons’.
In open spaces under flat horizontal ceilings, every point
should lie within 5.3m of a heat detector.
Heat detectors are designed to either detect a rapid rise
in temperature or to operate at a fixed temperature.
Although they provide a slower response time than
smoke detectors they do provide a method of protection
for areas where smoke detectors cannot be used.
Heat detectors should not be used for the protection of
life or where extensive property loss may be expected.

‘Rate of Rise’ heat detectors respond to both
rapid increases of temperature and to fixed top
temperature.
Cabling
The operation of a Fire Alarm and Detection System’
depends on the cabling and connections between the
components. It is essential that connection between

they are operated.
Cables within the system are required to function correctly
for significant periods after being attacked by fire. These
include the power supply cables to the control panel, the
detection circuits and the fire alarm sounder circuits. Thus
the cables chosen must be correctly rated to withstand
these conditions.

Addressable Fire Alarm
Introduction
Addressable fire alarm systems have traditionally been associated with
the larger, more complicated applications. But with downward price
trends, they have become feasible for smaller systems that would have
historically been designed with conventional fire alarm equipment.
A ddressable systems can o f f e r t h e f o l l o w i ng advantages over con v e n t i o n a l s y s t e m s : • Each detector communicates directly with the control panel, so it
knows the exact location of any alarm reported.
• Each detector can be assigned a courtesy label to help identify the
device.
• The detector reports a smoke value to the panel. The Panel decides
if this is an alarm. This allows some panels to make detectors more or
less sensitive according to current conditions, or time of day.

Premier AL 8 Loop Analogue Addressable Fire Alarm Control Panel
The Premier AL 8 loop analogue addressable fire
alarm control panel has been designed because of
the demand for larger centralised panels, rather
than smaller panels distributed on a network.
The Panel consists of a large enclosure that houses
two 4 loop panels that are networked together,
and run off a single power supply. The second
panel has its screen facing inwards behind the
blank door.
Because of this configuration, it is recommended
to use the network repeater with this control
panel.
This panel will occupy 2 network addresses.
When viewing the loop contents, loop 1 to 4 can
be viewed from the main screen. Loops 5 to 8
must be viewed using the internal display.

Addressable System Network
To connect a Premier AL panel to a network,
each panel will require a network card (Part
No: 37-205).
The Premier AL uses an “All-talk, selective
listen” peer to peer network.
That is, every panel transmits all its events
data to the network, and the other panels on
the network are programmed whether of not
they will react to that event.
Because it is a peer-to-peer network, there is
no “master panel”, so the network will still
function in the event of a failure of one or
more of the panels.

Alarm Manager Graphics System
For the Premier AL Analogue Addressable Control
Panels.
The Alarm Manager system is designed as a user-friendly
tool to view a potentially complex fire situation. Once
the system has been set up on-site by a qualified
engineer, the keyboard is no longer required, as all
event maps and user buttons will appear on the screen
as necessary to manage the particular event taking
place. The end user, who may not be technicallyminded, will still be able to operate the system on
a daily basis. All the system’s management functions
are protected via up to 7 different password levels.

The Premier AD 2 loop analogue addressable
fire alarm panel has been designed to be as
simple to use as a conventional fire alarm
panel.
It has 2 addressable loops, divided into 16
zones, and 4 conventional sounder circuits. The
sounder circuits operate on common alarm,

The Premier AD supports a serial repeater,

The Simplicity Plus is the ideal introduction to

The FEAO2000 is an analogue addressable Optical smoke
detector that works to the Zeta Addressable protocol,
compatible with Zeta alarm system control panels only.
The optical chamber consists of a removable plastic mesh,
an IR LED & an IR receiver. These are arranged such that in
normal conditions (clean air), no IR from the LED will reach
the IR receiver.
Every second, the IR LED emits a burst of collimated infra
red light. If there is any smoke in the chamber, it will scatter
the IR, allowing it to reach the receiver. The amount of IR
reaching the receiver is converted to an analogue smoke
value, and sent digitally back to the fire alarm control
panel as part of the detectors communication protocol.
The detector is supplied with a locking screw to prevent
removal of the head by unauthorised personnel. The
detector will return an analogue value of 55 counts with a
smoke obscuration level of 2.4% obscuration per metre.
The Fyreye optical smoke detector is particularly suitable
for detecting optically dense smoke, involving materials
such as soft furnishings, PVC, plastic, foam, and similar
materials which produce large visible small particles
(0.5mm to 10 mm).

The FEAH2000 is an analogue addressable Heat
detector that works to the Zeta Addressable
protocol.
The FEAHH2000 is an analogue addressable high
temperature heat detector.
The measuring circuit is based on a single precision
thermistor, whose characteristics change according
to temperature in a defined manner.
This change in characteristics is converted to an
analogue value, and sent digitally back to the fire
alarm control panel.
On the FEAH2000, the analogue reading is the
temperature in Centigrade (°C), so an analogue value
of 55 will be returned at 55°C.
On the FEAHH2000, the analogue reading changes by
one count when the temperature rises by 2.17 °C, so
the detector will return a value of 55 at 90 °C.
The detectors can be supplied with a locking screw
to prevent removal of the head by unauthorised
personnel.
The Fyreye Heat Detector is particularly suitable for
rooms where smoke detectors cannot be used due to
a high level of smoke or steam, such as kitchens.
The Fyreye High Temperature Heat Detector is
particularly suitable for environments with high
ambient temperatures, such as boiler rooms & laundry
drying rooms.

Fyreye Addressable Detector Bases
There are 6 different Fyreye detector bases
available for the addressable range of
detectors, namely, common base, isolator
base, addressable relay base, and the 6”
versions of these three bases.
The common base is the standard base, which
will be used with most heads.
The isolator base is used to protect the loop
against short circuits. They should be used at
least every 32 devices, but it is better practice
to use them at the end of every zone.
The Relay base is mainly used where the
activation of a particular detector requires a
signal to nearby equipment (door holders, or
air handling units, for example).

Fyreye addressable sounder-flasher base has
been designed to meet the increasing demand of
having a sounder and flasher in each room that
has a detector fitted.
As a step to making our equipment more user
friendly, the address is set by 3 rotary switches.
This means that addresses are set in Decimal,
rather than Binary. Valid addresses are 1 to 126.
Each sounder flasher base also has a built in short
circuit isolator, to help maintain system integrity
in the event of a fault condition. This means that
stand alone isolators or isolator bases are often
not required.
It has a red LED flasher incorporated into the
base, with a flash rate of 1 per second.

ZTA-LE2
Addressable Remote Indicator LED
On modern addressable fire alarm systems,
the remote output of a detector may often
be unavailable because it is used for another
purpose, to drive a sounder base, or a relay
base for example.
Because of this, we designed our addressable
remote indicator, to ensure that a remote LED
indication would always be available. The
remote Indicator can either be connected as
part of the loop, or as a spur from the detector
it is indicating.
It has the same address as the detector it is
indicating, and will now light whenever the
panel tells the detector to light.
There is also a version that will listen to a
number of consecutive addresses, designed
for when there are more than one detectors
behind a locked door.

Addressable Remote Indicator LED
The ZTA- LE3 is a low cost alternative to the fully
addressable remote LED indicator ZTA-LE2.
Remote LEDs are used in installations where a
detector going into alarm is likely to occur behind
a locked door, or in a ceiling void. The Indicator
will then show the location of the alarm.

The ZT-CP2/AD is the latest addressable call point
from Zeta Alarm Systems. It has a modern design,
and has been built to EN54 part 11.
It comes supplied with a back box which has
plenty of room for fitting the cables, and has 2 x
20mm knockouts for glanded cable entry.
It is a resettable call point that signals an alarm
with a yellow flag entering the window area, and
a red alarm LED.
It is available in 2 versions The CP1 version does
not have the Perspex protective cover. The CP2
version has the protective Perspex cover as well
as a “SNAPLATCH” catch that needs to be broken
off before the call point cover can be lifted. This
acts as a deterrent to malicious activations and
allows double action activation.

This weatherproof addressable Break Glass
unit is manufactured from aluminium in order
to withstand harsh environments. It has a built
in push button activator to signal an alarm
activation.
The address of the call point is set via an
internal address module. Valid addresses are 1
to 126. The call point will return an analogue
value of 16 for normal conditions, and a value
of 64 during an alarm condition.
The unit is finished in red anti-corrosive epoxy
powder coating, with 2 x 20mm cable entries.
The unit is supplied with a hammer and chain
to operate the unit.

Conventional Fire Alarm
Introduction
Conventional fire alarm systems have been
around for many years. They range from
simple 1 or 2 zone systems, to systems
with over 100 zones. The largest panel we
currently manufacture is 48 zones.
An end of line unit is fitted to the last device
in each circuit (Detection Zone, or sounder), in
order to monitor the line for breaks.
Conventional detection offers a good basic
system, ideal for small applications, or
projects on a tight budget.
• Control panel & devices tend to be cheaper
• Simple setup. No configuration required
• Wide range of compatibility between
manufacturers.
The detectors in a zone (or area) of the
building are all connected to the same pair
of wires. If any of these detectors reports
an alarm, a single indication is shown on
the control panel, meaning that the exact
location of the alarm is not shown.
Conventional systems offer the following

Conventional Panel Zonal Output Card
The Zonal output card is designed to work with
Premier SX, Optima or Premier Elite control
panels. The board connects to the repeater
interface socket on the control panel display PCB
via a 20 way ribbon cable. The repeater has 28V
outputs for Common alarm, Zonal Alarm (zones
1 to 8), Common Fault & tone (buzzer) active.
These outputs can be used to drive individual
relays, or to connect to a hard wired repeater
panel.
Fitting the Zone Output PCB.
• Power Down the control panel before fitting this
PCB.
• The zonal output PCB is fitted to the left hand
side of the display PCB.
• It is attached with 2 x self tapping screws, and 2
x self adhesive PCB support posts.
• The ribbon cable connects to the repeater
interface connector CONN 4 on the bottom right
hand corner of the display PCB.

The Premier M plus control panels are designed

The Premier 48M Plus control panels are

The Fyreye optical smoke detector incorporates
a pulsing infra red LED Located in an optical
chamber inside the detector. The chamber
is designed to eliminate the effect of any
external light source.
A Photodiode is located inside the optical
chamber at an angle to the IR LED. Under normal
conditions no IR reaches the photodiode. But
when smoke enters the chamber it causes the
IR to scatter, and this will then be picked up
by the photodiode. If the photodiode “sees”
smoke on the 2 following pulses, the detector
enters the alarm state, and lights its LED

The Fyreye Class A1R (rate of rise) heat detector
operates by utilising a matched pair of thermistors
to sense heat. One of these thermistors is exposed to
the ambient temperature, while the other is sealed
inside the detector housing. Under normal conditions,
both thermistors register similar readings. As fire
develops, the temperature registered by the exposed
thermistor will rise rapidly, resulting in an imbalance,
causing the detector to go into its alarm condition.
Rate of rise heat detectors also have an upper
temperature limit at which the detector will go
into alarm if the rate of temperature increase was
too slow to trigger the detector earlier. The Fyreye
Class CS (Static response or fixed temperature) heat
detector has only one thermistor, and changes to the
alarm state at a preset temperature.

The FEUV2000 is the replacement for the ZTFD101
flame detector, that fits the standard fyreye
bases.
The detector is particularly suited in applications
where flames can be expected to develop
initially rather than smoke, due to the nature of
the materials being protected. EG Camera film,
computer/audio/video tapes/disks
The detector is for indoor use only, and should
not be exposed to spurious sources of UV, such as
sparks, uncovered halogen lights, lightening etc,
because these could give a false alarm.
Because of the nature of operation of flame
detectors, it is generally recommended to fit just
one detector per zone.

There are 6 different Fyreye detector bases
available for the conventional range of detectors,
namely , common base, diode base, relay base,
and the 6” versions of these three bases.The
common base is used on systems that don’t need
to keep line integrity on head removal, and also on
addressable systems.
The Diode base is used on systems that do need
line integrity on head removal. This would include
all conventional systems that mix detectors & call
points on the same line. (Note that the Premier M,
MZ & L will need an active end of line to work with
diode bases).
The Relay base is mainly used on 12V security
systems to signal detector operation to the panel.
They can also be used on 24V fire systems where
the activation of a particular detector requires
a signal to nearby equipment (door holders for
example). When using a relay base, DO NOT
CONNECT A REMOTE LED. The detector cannot sink
enough current to operate both.

Auto-Aligning Reflective Beam Smoke Detector
Based on the proven technology of the standard Fyreye
reflective beam detector, the Fyreye 5000 Auto-Aligning
beam detector has been designed to help improve ease
of installation.
The detector now consists of 2 parts, the beam detector
itself, and a low level control unit. All connections are
made at the control unit, as well as all the alignment
functions. The unit can be configured as 50m or 100m
from the control unit, and can also be set into a low
current mode (at the expense of alignment motor
speed).
The beam detector has a built in laser sight to assist in
the initial mounting of the reflector plate.
Up to 4 beam detectors can be controlled from a single
control unit.

design, and has been built to EN54 part 11.
It is a resettable call point that signals an alarm
with a yellow flag entering the window area,

does not have the Perspex protective cover.
The CP2 version has the protective Perspex
cover as well as a “SNAPLATCH” catch that
needs to be broken off before the call point

The ZTBG/EXD explosion proof fire alarm control
is a station with an integral terminal chamber.
A push button actuator with a mushroom head
is provided in the main chamber.
This actuator is in constant contact with a glass

Zeta electronic sounders are ideal alternatives
to fire bells. The electronic sounders produce
a high sound level at a lower current
consumption, making them ideal for reducing
the battery standby capacity for a system.
The Maxitone sounder ZMT has 8 selectable
tones (selectable via dip switch combinations),
and an adjustable volume control (for small
rooms).
The Megatone ZIDC (formerly known as an
Industrial sounder) is ideal for warehouses

Magnetic Door Holders
The Zeta magnetic door holder is designed to
retain a fire door open, against the force of its
own closing device.
In the event of a fire, the door holder magnet
can be turned off by the fire alarm, allowing
the door to shut.
An optional Floor mounting bracket is also
available.
There are 2 versions, 24V dc and 240V ac.
The 24v DC door holder requires either a panel
with a 24v DC output, or a separate 24V PSU.
This can be switched through the FACP aux
relay, but it might need back EMF diodes fitted
to the Door Holder (1N4002 or similar, stripe to

AirCOn8 Addressable Carbon Monoxide
Monitoring & Control System
The AirCOn 8 system is a self conditioned controller
with a capacity to handle up to 110 CO monitors
which are divided to 8 monitoring zones. Each
Zone will permanently display on the Liquid Crystal
Display (LCD) the highest concentration of CO in that
zone in PPM (Particles Per Million). This monitored
value is updated every minute. The system will
allow up to 2 interface modules (ZIOU) which are
programmed to initiate a signal to Ventilation
equipments to operate at pre-determined levels of
concentration. Should the CO concentration keep
rising while the Ventilation is still on, an alarm is
raised at a pre-determined level.

Addressable Carbon Monoxide Detector
The CO800 is an analogue addressable Carbon
Monoxide detector specifically designed for use
with the Aircon 8 addressable carbon monoxide
monitoring & ventilation panel.
The detector uses an electro-chemical sensor

Stand Alone Carbon Monoxide Detector

been designed with the same dimensions as
a standard 2 gang fitting, so can be installed

Combustible Gas
Detection Introduction
There are many factors to take into account
when designing a combustible gas detection
system, but the main ones to consider are:-
30cm from the ceiling. LPG is heavier than
air, so these detectors should be installed
approximately 30cm from the floor.
• What is the gas to be monitored
• What concentration is going to report an
alarm?
• Is it lighter or heavier than air?
• Is there anything present that can
contaminate the sensor?
• What do you want the panel to do in the
alarm condition?
Sensor can loose their sensitivity through
contamination or poisoning. This can be caused
by several factors, mainly environmental. If
the sensor element itself is exposed to paint,
lacquer, oil or grease, a loss of sensitivity can
occur through contamination. If the sensor
element is exposed to heavy metal compounds
or Silicon compounds, the catalyst in the sensor
can absorb these poisons and permanently
damage the sensor. If the detector is likely to
be exposed to anything that can contaminate
or poison it, it should be tested at regular
intervals.
GLT Exports supply detectors to detect
Natural gas, or LPG.
The Gasguard 2000 system has 3 programmable
levels that will each operate a separate relay
output. The levels are set as a percentage of
the LEL (Lower Explosion Level).
Natural gas is lighter than air, so these
detectors should be installed approximately

Extinguishing System
Introduction
Extinguishing systems are primarily used
for the automatic protection of expensive
electronic equipment, such as network
servers, etc. which may be left unmanned
for long periods of time.
They work on the principle that 2 detection
zones are fitted to the area to be protected,
and that both zones should detect a fire
before the extinguishing agent is released.
(This is to avoid the possibility of releasing
the expensive gas in the event of a false
alarm).
When one zone detects an alarm, the control
panel will indicate this, and start the first
stage sounders. When the second zone goes
into alarm, the control panel will indicate
this. It will then stop the first stage sounders,
and start the second stage sounders, which
will have a different tone. The panel will also
start the bottle release timer. This is the delay
between the start of the second stage alarm,
and the extinguishing gas being released. When
the timer ends, the bottle output activates,
and the gas is released.
Most extinguishing panels will also have inputs
to initiate a manual release of the gas, or to
hold or abort the release of the gas. They
may also have the option to be switched to a
Manual only mode, so that the detectors will
not initiate a release.

Part 11
The ZT-CP2/Y, and ZT-CP2/B are the latest
Manual Release and Gas Abort call points from
Zeta Alarm Systems. They have a modern
design, and have been built to EN54 part 11.
They can be used with most extinguishing
control panels. The yellow call point is used to
initiate a manual release of the extinguishing
gas. The blue call point is used to stop the
release of the extinguishing gas, for example
if the room is occupied.
They are both resettable call points that
signal an operation with a different colour flag
entering the window area.

Introduction
In an aspirated detection system, air is
sampled from the protected area through a
network of pipes or tubes, actively drawing
the air towards the detection system using a
high pressure aspirator fan.

The Premier Fire Telephone System is an
emergency telephone system which has been

The ZATIU telephone interface unit is an
addressable unit can be connected directly to the
bus and it will provide a wide range of options.

The Premier Emergency Broadcast System
is the latest control panel designed in full
compliance with BSEN542000 Part 8 & 9 to

Zeta Duct Unit
The Zeta Duct unit allows air in a ventilation
duct to be monitored for smoke via a smoke
detector mounted outside the duct - in a
sealed chamber.
The unit comes supplied with 2 sampling
probes, one in, one out, which are mounted
through the duct, in the center of the air flow.
For a reliable smoke detection the air speed in
the duct must be at least 2.5 m/s.
The unit can be powered from either 230V AC
or a separate 24V power supply. The unit has
form C relay outputs for Alarm and for fault.

Zeta Sealed Lead Acid Batteries
Because fire alarm systems are life safety systems,
they must have a battery backup in order that
they will operate in the event of a mains failure.
All parts of the system, including auxiliary power
supplies must have a battery backup.
All the batteries stocked are 12 Volt batteries,
meaning that 2 batteries are required for a 24
volt system. The standard capacities stocked are
2.2Ah, 7Ah, 12Ah and 17Ah
It is important to choose the correct battery size
for the system load to give the required standby
time (usually 24 or 48 hours).

SD 630A
Autodialler
The SD-630A autodialler is a 24V powered
PCB suitable for mounting in many fire alarm
panels.
In the event of an alarm it can dial up to 6
different telephone numbers, and report with
a 16 second message.
The unit requires use of a telephone handset
to configure the phone numbers and record
the message. It can be configured for tone or
pulse dialling.
The dialler has a volt free relay that can be
activated via the phone line after the unit has
dialled a number and played it’s message.
A 12V version in a small enclosure is available
for use on security systems.

Test Accessories
The secret to having a trouble free fire alarm
system is to have the system checked, maintained
and serviced regularly.
GLT Exports supply a range of test equipment
suitable for most requirements, including smoke
detector testing, heat detector testing, and
detector removal tools.
Solo smoke test spray is a high quality detector
test spray that does not leave any residue in
the detectors when they are tested. This means
that the detectors do not re-alarm, when the
test alarm is reset.
Solo carbon monoxide spray is designed for
testing CO detectors. It can be used with the
same test equipment as the solo smoke spray
The Zeta BX168 is a hand-held CO gas detector
ideally suited for investigating causes of CO.
It gives the ppm reading on it’s LCD screen, and
has a built in alarm buzzer that sounds at the
alarm level.
It has built in rechargeable Ni-MH batteries.
The Zeta JL268 is a portable gas leak detector
suitable for industrial uses.
Its flexible “goose-neck” allows the sensor
head to be positioned into difficult to access
locations to investigate for gas leaks.
It detects Natural gas & LPG, but is available
on request for a range of other gasses.

Battery Calculation
Guide
Standby batteries are used to maintain system
operation in the event of a mains failure. The
size of batteries required will depend on several
factors:• How much current the system takes in the
normal condition
• How much current the system takes in the
alarm condition
• How long the system is required to run in the
event of a mains failure.
The general requirement for battery backup
is that the system is to be able to run for 24
hours, then run in alarm for 30 minutes with
an 80% charge in the batteries. (This is to allow
for batteries not being fully charged, battery
degradation etc.)
If the building is likely to be unmanned for
extended periods, one of the following should
be considered:• Fit standby batteries that will allow the
system to run for 48 or 72 hours instead of
the usual 24 hours
• Transmit the fault to an alarm receiving
centre (via a Redcare box, or similar
autodialler)
In general terms, addressable systems tend
to have a higher quiescent current than
conventional systems, and will usually require
a larger standby battery capacity.

Where:
• TALM= Maximum time in hours required
for the alarm [½ hour is most common
time]
• IALM = Total Alarm Current in amps for
all alarm devices connected to the alarm
circuits
• TSBY= Standby time in hours for the

48 or 72 hr]
• IQP = Quiescent current in amps of
control panel in fault condition [because
of mains failure]
• IQD = Quiescent current in amps of
all devices on the system [detectors,
sounders etc].
