Confirming the

Operating Environment

To use the printer driver, the computer you are using must satisfy the following requirements:

• The operating system must be Microsoft Windows XP

Professional/Home Edition or Microsoft Windows

2000 Professional.

About USB (Universal Serial Bus)

Specification Revision 2.0

• The UP-990AD/UP-970AD complies with the USB

2.0 specification.

• USB 2.0 is a newer standard than USB 1.1, but provides backward compatibility.

• USB 2.0 supports Hi-Speed USB, in addition to the existing Full (Low) Speed.

• The UP-990AD/UP-970AD can be connected as Full-

Speed in a USB 1.1 environment. However, to use the

UP-990AD/UP-970AD with Hi-Speed USB functions in a USB 1.1 environment, the following requirements must be met.

– Computer

A computer which supports Hi-Speed USB

(conforming to the USB 2.0 specification)

Windows 2000 Professional/Windows XP

Professional/Windows XP Home Edition

– USB 2.0 device driver

USB 2.0 device driver produced by Microsoft

Corporation. (Operation using USB 2.0 drivers other than ones produced by Microsoft Corporation is not guaranteed.)

– USB 2.0 certified cable

Use the 2-m cable supplied with the UP-990AD/UP-

970AD.

Operations of all of devices which conform to USB

2.0, or all USB 2.0 extension boards/extension cards cannot be guaranteed.

Note

If you connect the UP-990AD/UP-970AD to your computer when the printer is on, make sure that the operation of your computer is not suspended or that it is not on stand-by. Connecting the UP-990AD/UP-970AD to your computer when it is in one of the states above may cause erratic operation.

Explanations in this

Guide

All the explanations requiring the use of Windows XP

[Control Panel] assume that you are using it in Classic

View. To switch to Classic View, on the [Start] menu, click [Control Panel]. On the left side of the window, under [Control Panel], click [Switch to Classic View].

The explanations use the screens that appear when the

UP-990AD is connected, but the same procedure is applicable for the UP-970AD.

Before Installing the Printer Driver

About Version Upgrades

If you are upgrading a printer driver, remove the previous printer driver before beginning the installation.

For details on the procedure to remove the printer driver, refer to the section “Removing the Printer Driver” in this guide.

If the installation fails or is cancelled, restart your computer before attempting the installation again.

Note

Be sure to restart your computer after installing or uninstalling the printer driver. Unless you reboot, unstable operation may result.

USB 2.0 Connection

The UP-990AD/UP-970AD is compatible with USB

2.0. However, if your computer or USB hub is not USB

2.0-compliant, the following message appears when you connect the UP-990AD/UP-970AD. Click to close the message.

About Driver Signing Options

The present printer driver has not passed Windows Logo testing, therefore when you install the driver an error message may appear, preventing you from installing the driver.

In the [Driver Signing Options] dialog box, select

[Ignore] or [Warn] in the [What action do you want

Windows to take?] group box. If you select [Block], you cannot install the printer driver.

Open the [Driver Signing Options] dialog box as follows:

On the [Start] menu, click [Control Panel].

Double-click [System].

The [System Properties] dialog box opens.

Click the [Hardware] tab.

Click the [Driver Signing] button.

All the explanations in this guide assume that the setting in this dialog box is [Warn].

Connect the UP-990AD/UP-970AD to the computer.

Turn on the UP-990AD/UP-970AD.

Turn on the computer, and then log on as the system administrator or a member of the Administrators group.

The [Found New Hardware Wizard] dialog box opens.

• If the same [Found New Hardware Wizard] dialog box as in step 3 appears, proceed to step 4.

• If a [Found New Hardware Wizard] dialog box other than the one in step 3 appears, proceed to step 5.

• If the [Found New Hardware Wizard] dialog box does not appear, make sure the UP-990AD/UP-

970AD is connected to the computer and turned on, and then perform the operations below. (If other USB printers are connected, disconnect all but the UP-990AD/UP-970AD before performing the following operations.)

On the [Start] menu, click [Control Panel].

[Control Panel] opens.

Double-click [System].

The [System Properties] dialog box opens.

Click the [Hardware] tab.

Click the [Device Manager] button.

The [Device Manager] window opens.

Double-click [Universal Serial Bus controllers].

Select [USB Printing Support], right-click and open the properties, confirm [UP-990AD/

UP-970AD] is selected for [Location], and then select [Uninstall] from the [Action] menu.

Restart the computer.

After Windows XP starts, the [Found New

Hardware Wizard] dialog box opens.

Click [No, not this time] and click [Next].

Select [Install from a list or specific location

(Advanced)], and then click the [Next] button.

The following screen opens.

Select [Search for the best driver in these locations], select [Search removable media (floppy, CD-

ROM)], and then insert the provided “PRINTER

DRIVER & INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE UP-

990AD/UP-970AD”

CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.

Click the [Next] button.

The following dialog box opens.

Click the [Continue Anyway] button.

After the files are copied, the following screen opens.

Click the [Finish] button.

This completes the installation of the printer driver with Windows XP.

Restart the computer.

Before Installing the Printer Driver

About Version Upgrades

About Driver Signing Options

This printer driver has not passed Windows Logo testing, therefore if an error message appears during installation, installation may not be possible.

Make sure that [Ignore] or [Warn] is selected under [File signature verification] in the [Driver Signing Options] dialog box. You cannot install the UP-990AD/UP-

970AD printer driver if [Block] is selected.

Open the [Driver Signing Options] dialog box as follows:

Installing the Printer Driver

Connect the UP-990AD/UP-970AD to the computer.

Turn on the UP-990AD/UP-970AD.

Turn on the computer, and then log on as the system administrator or a member of the Administrators group.

After Windows 2000 starts, the [Found New

Hardware Wizard] dialog box opens.

On the [Start] menu, point to [Settings], and then click [Control Panel].

[Control Panel] opens.

Double-click [System].

The [System Properties] dialog box opens.

Click the [Hardware] tab.

Click the [Device Manager] button.

The [Device Manager] window opens.

Double-click [Universal Serial Bus controllers].

Select [USB Printing Support], right-click and open the properties, confirm [UP-990AD/UP-

970AD] is selected for [Location], and then select [Uninstall] from the [Action] menu.

Restart the computer.

After Windows 2000 starts, the [Found New

Hardware Wizard] dialog box opens.

Click the [Next] button.

The following screen opens.

Select [Search for a suitable driver ...], and then click the [Next] button.

The following screen opens.

If the [Found New Hardware Wizard] dialog box does not appear

Perform the following procedure while the UP-

990AD/UP-970AD is turned on and connected to the computer. (Perform the following procedure without any printer except the UP-990AD/UP-

970AD being connected by USB.)

Insert the provided “PRINTER DRIVER &

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE UP-990AD/UP-

970AD”

CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.

Select the [CD-ROM drives] check box, and then click the [Next] button.

The following screen opens.

Click the [Finish] button.

This completes the installation of the printer driver with Windows 2000.

Restart the computer.

Note

If [Cancel] in Step 7 or [No] in Step 8 was selected, the

[Found New Hardware Wizard] dialog box may not appear during the next installation. In that case, perform the procedure described in "If the [Found New

Hardware Wizard] dialog box does not appear" in

Step 3.

Click the [Next] button.

If the [Digital Signature Not Found] dialog box opens, click the [Yes] button.

The following screen opens.

Removing the Printer

Driver

This section describes the procedures to remove the printer driver.

Turn on the computer, and then log on as the system administrator or a member of the Administrators group.

On the Windows XP [Start] menu, click [Control

Panel]. In [Control Panel], double-click [Add or

Remove Programs]. (On the Windows 2000 [Start] menu, point to the [Settings], and click [Control

Panel]. Then double-click [Add/Remove

Programs].)

Configuring the Printer

Configure the printer properties before using the printer to print from applications.

Display the printer properties with the following methods:

• On the Windows XP [Start] menu, click [Control

Panel]. In [Control Panel], double-click [Printers and

Faxes]. On the Windows 2000 [Start] menu, point to

[Settings], and then click [Printers]. Select the Sony

UP-990AD/UP-970AD icon, then click [Printing

Preferences] on the [File] menu. The settings that you make here are used as default settings when printing from applications.

• On the [File] menu of your application, click the command used to make printer settings. The settings made this way only remain valid until you close the application.

This section describes the [UP-990AD/UP-970AD

Properties] dialog box settings that are unique to the UP-

990AD/UP-970AD printer.

This section describes the dialog box tabs as they appear in Windows XP. The items that appear and configuration methods are the same for Windows 2000.

[Layout] Tab

This tab is used to make basic printing settings.

From [Currently installed programs], select [Sony

UP-990AD/UP-970AD Printer Driver], and then click [Change/Remove].

The following dialog box appears.

Click [Yes].

When the printer driver is finished uninstalling, the following dialog box appears.

Click [Yes].

Restart the computer.

This completes the removal of the printer driver.

Paper

Select the paper size (1920 × 2560, 2560 × 2560,

3414 × 2560).

Copies

Select the number of copies to print (1 to 255).

Scaling

Select the rate of enlargement or reduction (10% to

400%). To interpolate the image, select a [Interpolation

Method] setting below. [Enlarge to Paper] cannot be used with this feature.

Enlarge to Paper

If the image size is smaller than the size of the selected paper, the image is enlarged automatically to fit the paper. The [Interpolation Method] feature below can be selected, but the [Scaling] feature cannot be used.

Interpolation Method

Select [Bilinear] or [Nearest Neighbor] for the image interpolation method.

Orientation

Select [Portrait] or [Landscape] for the print orientation.

Read

Allows you to load saved settings.

Write

Allows you to save the current settings.

About

Displays information about the driver version.

Restore Defaults

Restores the settings to their default values.

[Density Adjust] Tab

Select the density of the image.

GAMMA

Select [TONE1], [TONE2] or [TONE3].

Advanced

Drag the slider to select the level of gradation. The larger the selected value, the darker the gradation.

Dark

Drag the slider to adjust the dark parts of the image.

Light

Drag the slider to adjust the light parts of the image.

Sharpness

Drag the slider to adjust the outline of the image. The larger the selected value, the sharper the edges of the image.

Restore Defaults

Restores the settings to their default values.

[Settings] Tab

Select whether to use the printer setting or the printer driver setting for each item.

Copies

Select this check box to use the printer setting. Doing so also disables the [Copies] setting in the [Layout] tab.

Clear this check box to use the [Copies] setting on the

[Layout] tab.

Enlarge to Paper

Select this check box to use the printer setting. Doing so also disables the [Enlarge to Paper] and [Scaling] settings in the [Layout] tab.

Clear this check box to use the [Enlarge to Paper] or

[Scaling] settings on the [Layout] tab.

Gamma

Select this check box to use the printer setting. Doing so also disables the [GAMMA] setting in the [Density

Adjust] tab.

Clear this check box to use the [GAMMA] setting on the

[Density Adjust] tab.

Sharpness

Select this check box to use the printer setting. Doing so also disables the [Sharpness] setting in the [Density

Adjust] tab.

Clear this check box to use the [Sharpness] setting on the

[Density Adjust] tab.

Restore Defaults

Restores the settings to their default values.

[Message] Tab

Select the display position of message dialog boxes.

Test

Click this button to display a test message dialog box in the position defined by [Horizontal] and [Vertical], which allows you to verify the accuracy of its position.

Use the simple dialog box

Select this check box to display smaller size message dialog boxes.

Restore Defaults

Restores the settings to their default values.

Adjust the display position

Select this check box to adjust the display position of message dialog boxes. The message dialog box appears in the position defined by the values specified in the

[Horizontal] and [Vertical] boxes.

Horizontal and Vertical

Defines the position of message dialog boxes, using the upper-left corner of the screen as the origin.
