!Hola! and thanks for joining us today to sample SEAT’s
swiftest production cars yet – the new Leon CUPRA 290
range. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the birth of
CUPRA, so with the historic Terramar backdrop later on, it’s
also an ideal occasion for us to proudly display some of its
most iconic creations to date.
With the new Leon CUPRA 290, a success
story is moving onto the next level. The
first generation was launched in 1996 with
the Ibiza, followed since by an array of
ever-faster and highly acclaimed CUPRA
models which have developed to become
the embodiment of the SEAT brand. In the
latest generation, the range-topping
Leons continue to be offered, uniquely in
the class, as a three-door coupé (SC –
Sports Coupé), practical five-door and
ultra-versatile estate (ST - Sports Tourer)
with a bodystyle to suit every
lifestyle and budget.
OVERVIEW
If you don’t read anything else in this beautifully
crafted Press pack, then at least read this…
The latest version of the
third-generation
Leon
CUPRA retains all of the
ingredients of the previous
version’s winning recipe,
such as its agility, comfort,
desirability, and in the case of
the ST, also versatility. But, this
time around it adds an even more sizzling 2.0 TSI
engine with even greater flexibility and power,
plus a new sports exhaust system, to deliver an
even more rewarding driving experience.
This handy little booklet should tell you everything
you need to know about the flagship models in
the SEAT range. But, in the (very) unlikely event
that we’ve missed something, just collar one of us.

pressure and sportier sound) and Full Link fitted as standard. New two-tier Leon CUPRA 290 UK

Leon and CUPRA – The story so far
“CUPRA is the essence of the SEAT brand and we continue to nurture and refine this
icon. The new CUPRA 290 displays SEAT expertise in full dimension. It’s a refined,
high-performance vehicle that combines its expressive dynamics with relaxed
long-distance comfort and compelling quality.”
Luca de Meo, President of SEAT S.A.
16 years and counting...
Debuted in 2003, the final version of the
first-generation Leon CUPRA featured a 225
horsepower 1.8 20VT engine that churned
out a top speed of 150 mph and 0 to 62
mph acceleration in only 6.9 seconds.
Furthermore, its Agile Chassis provided
excellent handling, especially around
corners.
Launched in 2000, the first Leon CUPRA was
special to SEAT for several reasons: the first
with a naturally-aspirated V6 engine, the
first production model with over 200
horsepower, and the first Leon equipped
with a six-speed gearbox. Its enormous
power output of 204 horsepower enabled it
to reach 146 mph and accelerate from 0 to
62 mph in only 7.3 seconds. The interior
featured Recaro seats as part of its standard
equipment.
The second version of the Leon CUPRA,
launched in 2002, was the first Leon
developed by SEAT Sport and one of the
fastest hot hatches of its era. By doing away
with all-wheel-drive it was more
lightweight, and thanks to its powerful 210
horsepower engine it achieved a top speed
of 147 mph and accelerated from 0 to 62
mph in 7.2 seconds.
SEAT UK sold 7,552 of the 1st generation
Leon CUPRA, including the only diesel
version (sold 2003-5) to date.
Arriving in 2006, the second-generation
Leon CUPRA packed a 2.0 TSI engine,
offering
an
unprecedented
240
horsepower, 0 to 62 mph in just 6.4
seconds and a top speed close to 155
mph. The fastest SEAT yet.
16 years and counting...
At launch in 2009, the 265 horsepower
Leon CUPRA R was the most powerful in
SEAT history. It was a fully-fledged sports
car, with exclusive design, extensive
standard equipment, excellent grip thanks
to its self-locking electronic XDS
differential, top speed of 155 mph and 0 to
62 mph in just 6.2 seconds.
15,839 Leon CUPRAs were registered in the
UK across the two generations.
Initially available with 265 or 280 PS, the third
generation Leon CUPRA, launched in 2014, was
the unmistakable flagship model. The most
advanced technology lay behind its enormous
potential, including a dual injection, variable valve
timing 2.0 TSI engine, DCC adaptive chassis, active
self-locking differential, progressive steering,
CUPRA Drive Profile and standard full LED
headlamps. Plus, a choice of slick six-speed
manual or DSG-auto gearboxes. And for the first
time, the Leon CUPRA became available in all three
body styles: SC, 5-door and ST, offering an
everyday sports car to suit a wide array of buyers.
Set new front-wheel-drive production car
Nürburgring Nordschleife lap record (7.58:44).
Leon Cup Racer (330PS) also debuted at Geneva
With an additional 10 PS and all the
performance, agility and features of
previous CUPRA models, plus a new
sportier exhaust system and greater
spread of torque, the appeal of the latest
flagship Leon, CUPRA 290, is undeniable.
Plus, it’s SEAT’s most powerful production
model yet.
Substance...
And style...
“The CUPRA 290 offers the best
possible combination of sporty
dynamics, relaxed comfort and unique
style,” says Dr. Matthias Rabe, Vice
Leon CUPRA 290 versions benefit from a host of exterior styling touches, including:
President of Research and Development for
SEAT S.A.
“The continuous development and
improvement of our top models shows
how much CUPRA drivers matter to us.
They are getting an even more
emotional car, with better performance
and a completely new sound.”
