Installation Guide
RF Repeater
Package Contents:
AC Power
* The UWMS-05 SmartModem® requires a mini SIM card which is not included in the
package. This needs to be assigned a static IP address.
a. Set the device’s static IP address to the following:
IP address: 192.168.1.xx (xx can be any number from 2 to 10)*
Subnet mask:
Default gateway:
If the device has the following options (b to e) on the network (or LAN) setup
configuration, please set them as well. (optional)
b. Site ID (or Host Name): Enter the unique ID (or Name) assigned by the Operator
or the customer.
c. SNMP Trap (or Heartbeat) Mode: Turn SNMP Trap (or Heartbeat) on and set it to
the 20 minute period.
d. SNMP Trap (or Heartbeat) Destination Address: Enter the IP Address of the NOC
of your choice.
e. Location Data: Enter GPS (latitude and longitude) information.
* If you are connecting multiple devices to the SmartModem®, assign different IP
addresses to each device, e.g.,,, If the device
won’t allow static IP, you can skip this step. If you cannot access local user Interface
of the device, contact the technical support for the device manufacturer.
Step 2. Installing the SmartModem® and
connecting the SmartModem® to the device(s).
Step 3. Login to the SmartModem® and check
network connection status.

a. Place (or mount) the SmartModem® near the device (repeater or DAS) to which the
SmartModem® is to be connected.
b. Connect the supplied dipole antennas.*
c. Insert the mini SIM card to the slot on the front side. Make sure the SIM card is installed
d. Power up the SmartModem® using the supplied power adapter.
*Make sure you can get a RF signal greater than -85 dBm. Otherwise, you can couple a
stronger signal from the device’s donor port using an 10dB RF coupler kit. (option)
e. Using the straight or cross-over Ethernet cable(s),** connect the SmartModem to the
device(s) as shown below.
**The Ethernet cable(s) between the device(s) and the SmartModem® are not included in
the package.
RF Repeater
a. Configure a laptop LAN (TCP/IP properties) setting as follows:
-. Obtain an IP address automatically.
-. Alternately, you can assign the IP address.

Gateway: Leave it blank
b. Connect the SmartModem® to the laptop using the supplied Ethernet cable.
c. Open an Internet Explorer and login to the SmartModem® with the following
User Name: sym Password: sym
d. After you login, make sure the Modem Status icon has changed to “connected”
indicated by the red X mark changing to green bars. In addition, the “Cellular Link”
LED will be lit in solid green on the front face of the SmartModem®. If either the
Cellular Link LED is not lit in green or the Modem Status icon does not change to
green bars, this indicates that the SmartModem® has failed to connect to the
wireless network. Please call your wireless service provider and confirm that the
SIM card is activated properly. Please have your MEID and IMEI for the LTE
Step 4. Device Management
c. Set the following parameters to add the device at the Add New Device page.
RF Repeater
Device ID: Assign the same ID (Site ID or Host Name) that you assigned to the device.
IP Address: 192.168.1.xx (xx is the IP address already assigned to the device.
Type: Set category of the device.
Vendor: Set manufacturer of the device.
Model: Set model name of the device.
Port Forwarding*: Set port forwarding table.
(or 192.168.1.xx, if laptop
has DHCP setting)
a. On the Device Management of the DEVICE page, make sure that the Connected
devices are detected and displayed in the Inactive Device table as shown below.
For example, the RF Repeater (, DAS HUB ( and laptop
( are detected and displayed in the Inactive Device table.
If you don’t see the connected device in the Inactive Device table, please check if the device
has assigned a MAC address.
b. Once the devIce(s) is detected and displayed in the Inactive Device table, click Add
button to register and make the device(s) active, with the exception of the laptop
connection. If you click Add button, the device information will go to Add New
Device page.
* Please assign external and internal Ports for TCP (HTTP & Telnet) and UDP (SNMP).
External ports should match with the monitoring server of the NOC. Please contact
the NOC to match these port numbers.
For the internal port on the UWMS-05, please use the following internal ports.
WEB port: 80
Telnet port: 23
UDP (SNMP) port: 161
Step 5. Setting up the SmartModem®
Step 6. Final check
a. Go to Heartbeat Setup under the SNMP page.
b. Set the following parameters:
SNMP Trap Version: By default, SNMP version 2C is selected. If SNMP V3 is
required, go to the SNMP Setup page.
Site ID: By default, the Site ID is the serial number of the SmartModem®. However,
you can change the Site ID to your choice.
Primary Manager IP: Enter the destination IP address which will receive and
monitor the alarms. By default, SYM’s monitoring server address is assigned.
Secondary Manager IP: Enter another NOC address, if desired. (Optional)
Heartbeat: Enable the heartbeat mode and set the heartbeat interval to 20
minutes. If operator’s NOC polls the device, there is no need to turn on the
Location Information: When the heartbeat mode is enabled, the location
information is needed. Enter the GPS coordinates or the street address of the site.
a. Make sure the device connected to the SmartModem® has been added successfully
and is now on the Active Device table on the Device Management page.
b. Minimize the SmartModem® page and open a new Internet Explorer.
c. Login to the device by typing in the assigned IP address via the SmartModem®.
d. Confirm that you can see the device’s web GUI via the SmartModem®.
e. Confirm that the Power LED is lit green, that the Status LED is blinking green, And
the PPP LED is lit in green on the front face of the SmartModem®.
f. Call The Operator’s NOC and make sure that the NOC started receiving heartbeats
from both the SmartModem® and the device(s), or that the NOC can poll the devices
via the SmartModem®.
Congratulations! The SmartModem® has been successfully set up.
