VoiceThread in Sakai
VoiceThread allows instructors and students to have conversations and make comments using any mix
of text, a microphone, a webcam, a telephone, or an uploaded audio file.
NOTE: To use VoiceThread in Sakai, make sure you first click on the VoiceThread link in
the left tool menu – this will enroll you in this class in VoiceThread so you can view all
VoiceThreads created for the course.
Play a VoiceThread
1. Log into sakai.luc.edu and go to your course.
2. Click on the VoiceThread link in the left tool menu to see all VoiceThreads shared with the
class. You can sort the VoiceThreads and view in List, Thumbnail, or Large view.
You can also search for a particular VoiceThread by title or author using the Search box in the
upper right corner.
3. Click on the VoiceThread you want to play.

The VoiceThread may start to play automatically, starting with the first comment on
top left. If there are additional comments, the VoiceThread will move through all
comments, then move to the next slide.
If the VoiceThread does not start playing automatically, click the Play button in the
middle of the bottom of the VoiceThread, directly under the comment button.
The right arrow moves to the next slide, the left arrow to the previous slide.
If the VoiceThread is a video, the video will play first, then each of the comments
will play.
4. To stop the video at any time, press the Pause
button.
When you press the Pause button, it changes to a Play button, which you can use to start
playing the VoiceThread where you left off.
Comment on a VoiceThread
1. Click on the VoiceThread to comment on.
2. Click the Comment button that appears under the slide image.
3. You can comment by typing, recording your voice, recording video, uploading a recorded
comment, or by phone.

To type your comment, click on the “type” button and start typing.
To use your microphone to record your comment:
 Click on the “record” button.
 Click Allow.
 Start talking.
o
To use your webcam to record a comment, click the videocamera icon
talking.
o
If you are using your phone to comment, click on the phone icon
and type in your
phone number; VoiceThread will call you back and you can record your comment.

To upload a previously recorded comment, click the upload icon
and browse for

4. When you are finished with your comment, click Save; or click Cancel if you want to redo
your comment.

Create a VoiceThread
1. Log into sakai.luc.edu and go to your course.
2. Click on the VoiceThread link in the left tool menu.
3. Scroll down and click on the Create link at the bottom right of the page.
4. If you see a request to log in, enter your Loyola uvid and password – the same credentials you
use to log into LOCUS – and click the “sign in” button. Do not enter your email address.
5. Click on Upload and upload images, documents, or videos.
6. After you have uploaded, click on Comment
upload and add any comments you wish.

7. Click “Add a title and description” in the upper left corner of the Create tab, type a title and
description for your VoiceThread, and click Save.
8. To control whether your VoiceThread plays automatically and how long slides are displayed,
click on Playback Options, at the bottom left of the Create page. The default setting is for the
VoiceThread to start playing when opened and display each slide for four seconds before
moving on.
Share a VoiceThread
To share the VoiceThread with your class, click Share
class from the Orgs & Groups box.


