4 -5 shifts per week + occasional evening events
Cafe core opening hours:
Monday – Friday 8.30am – 5.00pm
Weekends 11.00am – 5.00pm
Spike Café is a lively and unique space that provides a social hub at the
heart of our thriving arts organisation. Spike Island is a national centre
for the production and exhibition of contemporary art and design.
Alongside the gallery, Spike Café represents the face of the organisation.
The Café Supervisor is a key role in providing a warm welcome and fantastic
customer service to all users of the building including studio-holders,
tenants, fine art students, gallery visitors and the wider Spike staff team.
Supervisory Responsibility
Key holder responsibilities including opening up and closing down
and ensuring the café is secure at all times
Setting up and managing the café each day
Attending team, front of house and staff meetings as appropriate
Willingness to attend training as appropriate
Staff management
The café supervisor oversees the front of house assistants, kitchen
coordinator and kitchen assistant
Manage staff rotas, hours, holidays and wage sheets
Ensure high levels of cleanliness and hygiene are met at all times
Ensure that café staff provide a warm and welcoming environment and
that customer service is efficient and outstanding
Maintain excellent levels of communication with the café team and
broader Spike Island team
Train and direct Front of House assistants and any additional staff
Be responsible for cleaning rota, deep clean of café area and
completion of daily records for health and safety
Be responsible for repair and maintenance of café equipment and
Cash handling, float management and till reconciliation daily
Staff training on till operations, and implementing till and pricing
updates with the manager
Stock Management
Ordering and storage of food, beverages and cleaning products
liaising with kitchen coordinator and manager on any additional
stock changes or requirements
Quarterly stock take
Maintain adequate stock levels of disposables
Be aware of Spike’s licensing restrictions and train all staff in
their adherence
Be aware of laws of sale of alcohol
Report all breaches to Café and Events Manager
Be responsible for the smooth running of the café during events this
will include catering, hosting and late night opening, working with
Operations team and Café and Events Manager.

Job description:
The job description is a guide to the duties
that the Café Supervisor is required to
undertake. They may be changed from time to
time by agreement to meet changing
Normal hours of work:
Normal hours of work are 35 hours per week.
You will work 4 – 5 shifts per week, includes
weekends and occasional evening events. You
will be entitled to an unpaid break of half an
hour each day. Time off in lieu may be taken in
respect of hours worked over and above the
normal hours by agreement with the line
£14,280 p.a.
Annual leave:
In addition to public holidays, employees are
entitled to 20 working days annual leave on
full pay. For every year of service employees
are entitled to an extra day, up to a maximum
of 25 days per year.
Probationary period:
This post is subject to a probationary period
of three months. There will be a staff review
at 3 months and again at 6 months. This period
can be extended but by no more than 6 weeks in
any circumstances.
Spike Island operates the standard stakeholder
pension scheme. Employees are eligible for a
pension once their employment is confirmed and
following the probationary period. Spike Island
will make a contribution of 5% of gross annual
