Why Is This Happening?
Drunk driving
The Fatality Analysis Reporting
System analyzed wrong-way driving
collisions from 1,566 wrong-way
drivers:
• 936 had alcohol in their system
(6 out of 10 drivers)
• 684 were considered to have high
BAC levels at or above 0.15
• 114 had BAC levels between
0.08 and 0.14

Why Is This Happening?
Confused elderly drivers
Fatality Analysis Reporting System:
• Drivers over the age of 70 constitute nearly
15 percent of at-fault wrong-way collisions
• Less than 8 percent of all drivers over age
70 had a reported B.A.C of 0.08 or higher
• Whereas, 65% percent of 20-to-39-year-olds
had a reported B.A.C levels of 0.08 or higher
What does this mean?
• Alcohol isn’t a major
contributing factor for
elderly drivers causing
wrong-way accidents
Is Age a Contributing Factor?

Right way drivers
Wrong way drivers
• Most wrong-way drivers were
between the ages of 20-50
• Proportionately, there were

in the 70-79 category

Here is What We Know
• Wrong-way collisions account for
only 3% of accidents on
high-speed divided highways
• Far more serious than any other
type of accident because of their
head-on nature
• On average, 360 die each year in
wrong-way collisions *FARS data*
Key Takeaways
• Drunk Driving is the main culprit or
wrong-way drivers.
• Decreasing drunk driving will decrease
wrong-way driving
• The 20-29 year old age group is
mostly likely to cause and be
involved in a wrong way accident
• 48% of wrong way accidents occur
between midnight and 6am

Countermeasures: Prevention
Lowering the height
of “Do Not Enter” and
“Wrong Way” signs
inline with the
driver’s line of sight
Countermeasures: Prevention
• Adding Reflective
Covering on the post
greatly increases the
RED Visibility in line
with the driver’s line
of sight
Countermeasures: Prevention
Mounting both “Do Not Enter”
and “Wrong Way” signs on the
same post, paired on both sides
of the exit travel lane
Using oversized “Do Not Enter”
and “Wrong Way” signs
Countermeasures: Prevention
Countermeasures: Prevention
Install extension pavement
markings

LED-enhanced signage:
• 24/7
• Dusk until dawn
TxDOT experienced a 38
percent reduction in wrongway driving incidents after
adding LEDs to the borders
of Do Not Enter and Wrong
Way signs.

• Dusk until dawn
Cal-TRANS experienced a 42
percent reduction in wrong-way
driving incidents on 60 Locations
after adding multiple Wrong Way
Countermeasures Treatments
such as Lowering Signs, Markers
and some LED-enhanced
signage.

Countermeasures: Detection
LED-enhanced signage:
• BlinkerSign®
• Rectangular Rapid Flash Beacons
• Traditional Beacons
Activation methods:
