Note: Follow all directions exactly. If there is any deviation from the worksheet you must note this. This
product is milky in appearance. Once settled it should be a completely clear viscous solution with
nothing floating in it.
1. To be made by, or supervised by, experienced personnel
2. Must wear a lab coat/scrub shirt
3. Must wear a hair net
4. If any colds, wear a mask over one's mouth
5. Must wear non-sterile gloves
6. Must ensure bottles that are used are clean (check by looking inside if they look clean)

Procedure
1. Put 24 bottles of Sterile Water for Irrigation into the walk-in refrigerator overnight.
2. Weigh out the Sodium Benzoate on the Mettler balance using the medium weigh
boats. Have all 20 weighed out before calling for a check. Leave the last one on the
balance to show the correct weight.
3. Weigh out the Methylcellulose on the Mettler balance using the large weigh boats.
Use the same procedure as above.
4. Measure 600mL of boiling Sterile Water for Irrigation into the graduated measure.
Pour into the blender.
5. Add 6g of Sodium Benzoate to the blender. Mix for 1 minute on speed 3.
6. Add 30g of Methylcellulose to the liquid in the blender. Mix for 2 minutes on speed
3.
7. Measure 2400mL of ice cold Sterile Water for Irrigation in the 3000mL graduated
jug. Add to the liquid in the blender quickly and mix for 2 - 3 minutes on speed 3.
8. Transfer the liquid into the Sterile Water containers using a large funnel
9. Refrigerate overnight OR for a minimum of 4 hours before use. (or, until solution
looks clear and not milky)
