DS3 Series Current Operated Switches combine a Hall
effect sensor, signal conditioner and a limit alarm into a
single package. The DS3 Series offers three jumper-selected
current input ranges and frequency response from DC to

AS1 Series Current Operated Switches combine a current

Upon sensing an average operating current, the ASM
self-learns and establishes a limit-alarm trip point based on
±15% of the average expected current draw. The ASM is

AS1 SERIES WITH OUTPUT BYPASS
Current Operated Switches
AS1 Series with output bypass is a standard AS1 current
switch with the additional feature of allowing a user to
bypass sensor operation and force the output contacts into
their energized state. This feature is beneficial whenever
commissioning or servicing a system as it allows the
output circuit to be tested without the sensor having to be
operational. Available in -FT solid-core enclosure style only
(See AS1 dimensional drawing on page 3).

• Monitor fan, pump or heater status; sense when
equipment is on and operating at normal current draw
levels.
• Provide electronic “proof of flow” without duct or pipe
sensor installations.
Universal Output
• N.O. or N.C. solid state switch for applications up
to 240VAC/VDC. Compatible with most automation
systems and equipment.
Conveyor Loading or Jam Sensing
• Monitor load on conveyor motors to detect when jams or
overloads occur.

AC Current Switch
The AS1 Series Compact Case current sensing switch is
a compact, inexpensive, easy-to-use ring which slips onto
a conductor to give a solid state contact for indication of
current flow. Ideal for use in control panels, or wherever
confirmation of current flow is desired, AS1 Series-CC
current switches are a cost-effective way to detect live
conductors and see current flow to fans, heaters, pumps,
lighting or other AC powered devices.

Current Operated Switches
AS3 Series Current Operated Switches provide the same
dependable indication of status offered by the AS1, but with
the added benefit of increased setpoint accuracy. A choice
of three, jumper-selectable input ranges allows the AS3
to be tailored to an application, providing more precise
control through improved setpoint resolution. Self-powering,
isolated solid-state outputs, 1–6A, 6–40A and 40–200A
input ranges, and a choice of split- or solid-core enclosures
are standard.

Current Operated Switches
AS1 DODC Series current relay with dual output is ideal
for applications where users want to monitor multiple loads
simultaneously and alarm when cumulative current draws
reach or exceed desired setpoints. Combining the setpoint,
LED indication and output functions of multiple sensors into
one space-saving package, the AS1 DODC Series allows
OEMs to tailor individual trip points to specific processes
and trigger independent contacts. The AS1 DODC
may serve as an effective over/undercurrent monitor by
energizing alarm contacts whenever sensed current falls
outside the low and high band setpoints.

delay. A fixed two-second delay upon trip minimizes
nuisance alarms during start-up and operation in motor or

120VAC supplies, this high performance product offers
OEM-caliber accuracy, precision tolerances, low hysteresis

Current Operated Relay
AS1 NOR-FT-GO Series is a specialized current relay
providing an electromechanical relay contact. This output
allows the sensor to control much more current than
other AS1 models. This contact can control loads up to
5 amps, AC or DC. Solid-state contacts generally have
a much lower capacity, making this sensor much more
versatile than most self-powered models. Available in a

AT Series Current Transducers combine a current transformer
and signal conditioner into a single package. The AT
Series has jumper selected current input ranges and industry

ATR Series Current Transducers combine a current
transformer and a True RMS signal conditioner into a single
package. The ATR Series provides True RMS output on
distorted waveforms found on VFD or SCR outputs, and on
linear loads in “noisy” power environments. Available in a

Selecting the right transducer:
The current waveform of a typical linear load is a pure
sine wave. In VFD and SCR applications, however, output
waveforms are rough approximations of a sine wave.
There are numerous spikes and dips in each cycle. ATR
transducers use a mathematical algorithm called “True RMS”
which integrates the actual waveform over time. The output
is the amperage component of the true power (heating
value) of the AC current waveform. True RMS is the only
way to accurately measure distorted AC waveforms. Select
ATR transducers for nonlinear loads in “noisy” power
environments.

ATCR Series Current Transducers combine a sensing coil
and a True RMS signal conditioner as a matched, factory
calibrated set. The ATCR Series is designed to produce

or current transformer is difficult and time consuming. With this
new design, the sensing is accomplished using a coil without
a magnetically permeable core. This allows the installer to
pass the coil around the conductors after they are connected
with a no need to disconnect. The coil is attached to a signal
conditioning circuit, and the output signal is powered from
the 24 VDC nominal loop voltage. Simple, easy to install,
can monitor sinusoidal or distorted current wave forms at
frequencies to 400 Hz, and designed for industrial uses.

DT Series Current Transducers combine a Hall effect sensor

bipolar models have jumper selectable current input ranges

Monitoring PV Arrays:
The current produced by a photovoltaic module or array
can be easily monitored by using the DLT series current
sensors over the conductor exiting the collectors. A simple
two-wire connection, powered by 24 VDC nominal in series
with the sensor output, and the sensor will produce a signal
in real time that is directly proportional to the current being
produced.
If a single cell fails, or a module quits operating properly,
the current output will drop, and the current sensor will
reflect the change.
Safer and more stable than shunts, non-contact current
sensors are a simple answer to measuring DC current at
any point in the PV system.

“Zero Sum” Operating Principle:
In three-phase delta and wye systems, under normal
conditions current in the ‘hot’ leg of a two-wire load is equal
in magnitude but opposite in sign to the current in the neutral
leg. As a result, the electromagnetic fields surrounding these
two conductors cancel, producing a “zero sum current.”
As soon as current leaks to ground (fault condition) the two
currents become imbalanced and a net magnetic field
results. AG Series sensors monitor this field and trip alarm
contacts when the leakage rises above setpoint.

AGT Series Current Transducers combine a current
transformer and a True RMS signal conditioner into a single
package. The AGT Series is designed to produce an

Selecting the right ground fault detector:
NEC Article 427-22 requires that fault currents be
monitored on industrial equipment. However, where
maintenance and supervision ensure that only qualified
persons will service the equipment and continued circuit
operation is necessary for safe operation and processes,
alarm indication is also required. A fault current transducer
can send a signal to a panel meter with alarm contacts
or a controller. As an example, the alarm points can be
configured so one alarm is initiated when fault current
reaches 30 mA, and another when it rises above 70 mA.
Ground fault protection is required in many applications,
and NK Technologies has a sensor that can be coupled
with your control system to provide this needed alarm or
circuit disconnection.

Large Aperture Ground Fault Sensors
AGL Series, new from NK Technologies, is a large aperture
ground fault sensor that offers one of the largest aperture
diameters in the industry while maintaining a compact
overall profile. Intended for sensing earth leakage in
applications up to 400A, the AGL Series offers a choice
of N.O. or N.C. latching relays or an SPDT Form C relay
with auto-reset. Enclosure features integral DIN-rail mounting
as standard and optional noise immunity coatings for
applications in harsh EMI/RFI environments.

VTR Series is a high-performance True RMS transducer for

Power Monitoring Sensors
APS Series kWH Power Transducers offer an inexpensive
way to measure kWH on single- and three-phase balanced
loads. The APS Series constantly measures motor power
consumption, which is proportional to the amount of work
being done and an indication of the motor load. Ideal for
mixing, grinding, machining and pumping applications
where power measurement is needed, the APS Series
includes a CT, voltage sensor and output signal conditioner
in a single package designed for easy installation.
Available for input currents up to 180A and nominal
voltages up to 480VAC.

Power Transducers
APT Series power transducers sense true, “active” power
and are a cost-effective way to measure kW on 1Ø
or 3Ø applications. up to 600VAC. Powered by 24V,
120V, or 220V supply, the APT provides a fully isolated
4–20mA proportional output making it compatible with
most supervisory controllers, panel meters and data loggers.
Housed in a compact, DIN-compatible enclosure, the APT
accepts standard 5A or 0–333mV current transformer
inputs.

APT Output Values
The APT Power Transducer will produce the full range
output when the current transformer is producing its maximum
output and the voltage is also at the range maximum.
As an example, using the APT-48T-5A-024-420 with
400:5 current transformers, the transducer will produce an
output of 20mA with voltage at 480, and with the load using
400 amps. When using one current transformer to monitor
a single phase load this will represent 192,000 watts
with unity power factor. The equation for single phase watt
calculation is E (voltage) times I (amps) times power factor.
Continuing with the example, if the transducer is monitoring
a three phase load, with voltage at 480 and three current
transformers connected, the transducer will produce an output
of 20mA when there is 400 amps in each phase, and
again, unity power factor. This output signal will represent
332,544 watts. The equation for three phase watts is E
(voltage) times I (amps) times √3 (1.732) times power factor.
The transducer can also monitor a three phase load, using
two current transformers. The transducer will produce an
output of 14.67mA when there is 400 amps in two phases
and unity power factor, and the monitored voltage is 480.
This output signal will represent 2/3 of the actual wattage.

APT SERIES
In summary, the APT can be used to monitor single or three
phase loads, and the output is scaled to represent the actual
watts used by the load on a three phase circuit with three
current transformers connected, 2/3 of the full scale output
with two current transformers on a three phase circuit, and
the actual watts used with one current transformer monitoring
a single phase load. The transducer output depends on the
current transformer ratio, the monitored voltage and how
many current transformers are connected.

Power Transducers
APMR Series power monitoring relays are intended for
sensing true, active power and measuring KW on 1Ø or
3Ø applications. Applicable on nominal circuits of 120,
240, 480, and 600VAC, the APMR offers multiple relay
outputs adjustable to trip when desired power thresholds
are reached. As an added benefit, a fully isolated
4–20mA output proportional to sensed KW is standard.
All trip points and associated time delays are individually
adjustable and each has its own status LED. Applicable on
variable frequency systems, the APMR comes in a compact,
DIN-compatible enclosure and is an ideal choice for
applications requiring power sensing and reporting.

Powering Multiple Transducers
From a Single Supply
For applications where multiple loop-powered (4-20mA
output) transducers are installed, it may be cost-effective
to power multiple transducers from one power supply as
shown.
Use of Auxiliary CT to
Monitor Fault Currents in Large Conductors
By using an auxiliary CT to fit around large conductors,
ground fault currents of 25mA and up may be sensed
by using multiple turns of the CT secondary through the
aperture of the ground fault sensor as shown. As the
number of turns required varies based on CT value,
desired trip points and sensor setpoint, contact factory for
assistance in this application.

with AT/ATR Series Transducers
In an instance where the monitored current is well below
1A nominal, it may be practical to wrap the conductor
through the aperture multiple times to magnify the signal.
For transducer applications, care must be taken to correctly
scale PLC/Controller inputs to correct values as each
pass of the conductor through the aperture increases
the amperage sensed by the transducer. For example, a
100mA signal passed through 5 times will be read as a
500mA signal and yields an output signal of 8mA on an
ATO and ATRO Series transducer.
Two-Piece Solution for Sensing Current in High
Amperage or Large Conductor Applications
For situations where conductor size and/or current rating
exceed sensor or transducer specifications, an auxiliary CT
can be used in conjunction with an AS Series current switch
or AT/ATR Series current transducers. As shown in above,
the 5A secondary of a 1200:5 split-core CT is passed
through the aperture of an NK sensor with the trip point or
output set accordingly.

MOTORS
Electric motors.
Electric motors are found extensively in
both the manufacturing and processing
industries. Both AC and DC powered motors are used to drive pumps, fans, conveyors and a broad range of
specialized equipment. There are many types of motors designed for many different applications, however
all require electrical current in order to generate the magnetic fields that are necessary to create rotation. By
measuring this current useful information can be made available regarding the status of the motor and the
equipment that is connected to it. This may be as basic as independently verifying the run status of the motor or
in conjunction with a PLC, for example, to protect a pump against dry run. Thus current may be used to both
monitor and protect motors and motor-driven equipment.
Fan Status:
Independent Verification of Operation
Good engineering practice suggests that every control
output should have a corresponding status input for
verification. On fans and pumps a current sensing switch
can be snapped over one motor leg and the output fed
to the automation system. NK Technologies’ self-powered
Current Sensing Switches will close when the motor turns on
and open when the motor is off. By adjusting the setpoint
pump coupling or fan belt failure can be detected. This
reliable solid-state solution eliminates the need for unreliable
pressure current switches and their costly installation.

DC Motor Installations
Applications
Many applications requiring high torque at low speeds,
like bridge cranes and log carriages, use DC shunt wound
motors. Since it is relatively easy to control the speed of a
DC motor by adjusting the voltage to the field windings,
precise regulation is afforded to applications like printing
press paper feeds or web control of multiple motors in the
paper making process. Using an NK Technologies’ DC
Current Transducer will provide an analog signal that can
be used to keep the motor from over-current situations. Using
an NK Technologies’ DC Current Sensing Switch will insure
that if the motor field supply is lost, the motor will not overspeed to the point of self-destruction.

Conveyor Jam Protection
When conveyors jam and the drive motor continues to
run, expensive mechanical damage to the drive components
often occurs. By installing an NK Technologies’ Current
Sensing Switch an overload condition, detected by higher
than normal running amps, can be used to switch off power
to the motor before mechanical damage results. The switch
setting can be adjusted so it is not affected by normal
changes in conveyor load. Current sensing switches are the
modern day equivalent of less reliable electromechanical
jam relays that have been in use for many decades.
In situations where there may be large variations in load
an NK Technologies’ Current Transducer may be used to
feed motor amps to the conveyor control system, commonly
a PLC. The PLC may be programmed to accommodate
different setpoints for different mechanical loads so that jam
protection is provided from light to heavy loads. In situations
where the conveyor is not able to accept analog signals NK
Technologies has developed a patented transducer with a
frequency output suitable for the Digital Inputs of most PLCs.

Saw Load Monitoring
Applications
Often a band saw is used to cut logs into rough planks,
before the planks are processed into finished lumber. Due
to inconsistencies in the log (knots, burls and checks), the
speed that the log is pulled through the saw must be varied.
The operator will often reduce the speed of the cut when
smoking occurs, or the blade breaks. By installing an NK
Technologies’ Current Transducer the operator’s job is made
easier. By watching the log and a display representing the
current draw of the band saw, the operator can achieve a
higher rate of output with less down-time.
A similar arrangement can be used with circular saws.
The blades become brittle after excessive heating if they
are worked too hard. Many automatic systems are in use
whereby the current draw is used to reduce the motor load
typically by reducing the feed-rate.

Motor Interlocks
The performance of size reduction equipment like crushers
or grinders can be optimized by controlling the in-feed in
order to
• Help prevent jamming
• Improve the uniformity of the resultant product
• Enhance overall production efficiency
By installing an NK Technologies’ Current Transducer
or Power Monitoring Sensors to monitor the in-feed to a
crushing process, the speed of the in feed drive can be
slowed when the crushing motor is working too hard, or the
speed can be increased when the crusher is under worked.
The analog 4-20 mA proportional signal is fed directly into
a VFD, and the drive does the rest of the control.
Additionally, NK Technologies’ Current Sensing Switches
installed on other conveying motors can be used to signal
malfunction (for example over-load or motor failure) to help
prevent costly equipment damage.

Closed Loop Control
Normal linear AC induction motors have a
current characteristic that increases with load. Thus
a measurement of current is proportional to the
motor load. NK Technologies’ True RMS Current
Transducers are designed to work in conjunction
with variable frequency drives (VFD) and measure the
current in the leg of the motor.
At an engine block manufacturing facility NK
Technologies’ Current Transducers provide the input
to a PLC used to position the rotating wire brushes
in order to clean away burrs and debris after
machining. As the current, and thus the load, changes so
the brushes are positioned for optimal clean-up. Similarly
Power Monitoring Sensors are used to control the position
of wheel wash brushes in a carwash. Power measurement
provides a more linear relationship for motors and other
loads with non-linear current characteristics. Current Sensing
Switches are used to co-ordinate operations between
conveyor, washing and drying systems.

Status Alarming

The auxiliary contacts in a motor starter are commonly
used to indicate when the motor is running. However,
auxiliary contacts only indicate the position of the contactor,
not the actual load status. If a downstream disconnect
is open (for example, for maintenance) or the contact
fails (either sticks or dirt build-up) there can be serious
consequences.
At a large fish farm, failed aerator pumps resulted
in massive stock losses. Because the auxiliary contacts
remained closed when the pump failed, the alarm was
never activated, the back-up pumps were not switched on
and the fish suffocated due to lack of oxygen. Now NK
Technologies’ Current Sensing Switches have been installed
to provide an alarm signal and a signal to automatically
switch over to the back-up aerator pumps.

Pumps.
Pumps are similar to fans but they push or pull liquids or gases through a
tightly confined space. Most are driven with electric motors, and monitoring
the current or power used by the pump, a great deal of information about the system can be obtained.
Bearings wear and cause the pump to consume more energy to operate. An open discharge line will create
a condition where the drive motor uses less current than during normal operation, and if the pump is used to
move waste water or sewage, the operator needs to know immediately that there is a problem. An impeller
can become pitted from water bubbles or corrosion, and this can cause an over current condition. A power
monitor measuring all three phases will detect a loss of phase before it can destroy the drive motor windings.
All conditions will be detected well before a fuse opens, a circuit breaker trips, or the overload elements trip.
Pump Jam & Suction Loss Protection
Pumps can become jammed due to foreign matter and
cause damage to both the pump and the motor before
thermal overloads are tripped. Additionally a blockage in
the suction line of the pump can cause the pump to run dry,
overheat and break a seal.
By simply installing an NK Technologies’ self-powered
Current Sensing Switch in one leg of the motor overload
(pump jam), underload (suction loss) or underload &
overload can be detected quickly before damage occurs.

PUMPS
Pump Load Monitoring
NK Technologies’ Current Transducers are used to
monitor motor current and therefore motor load. The output
from the transducer may be fed to an analog or digital
indicator or a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) for more
sophisticated monitoring and control.
NK Technologies’ Ground Fault Sensors keep the pumps
safe by measuring ground leakage currents as low as 5mA.
This also provides an alternative to moisture sensors used
with submersible pump motors.

Vacuum Pump Monitor
Vacuum pumps are used in a variety of applications in
the semiconductor industry, heat treatment, plastics and
packaging industries. By adding an NK Technologies’
Current Transducer over the lead feeding a vacuum pump,
it can easily be determined when all the air has been
removed from a vessel or envelope. The analog output can

signal the vacuum or equipment controller that it is time for
the next step in the process. In the case of an automated
packaging machine, a drop in current will signal that the
package is ready for sealing.

Moisture Ingress
on a Submersible Pump Motor
An NK Technologies’ Ground Fault Sensor installed
on a submersible pump motor provides an easy to install
replacement or addition to moisture sensors housed in the
motor casing. Unlike moisture sensors that have to be wired
back to the motor control center, the GF sensor is installed
in the motor control center. By detecting the ground fault
current resulting from moisture ingress or other potentially
dangerous conditions remedial action can be taken prior to
catastrophic failure. Either the pump can be replaced at the
next convenient time or switched off and a back-up pump
started.

Spin Pumps
Applications
Spin Pumps are used in the manufacture of synthetic fibers
and yarns. Very precise control is required to insure that
the product feed rate and the fiber draw
rate is matched. It is critical to monitor and
protect these spin pumps because they are
the heart of the system and are required
to run continuously. By installing an NK
Technologies’ Current Transducers, the
motor current may be monitored providing
the control system with key information
regarding load. Variations in load may be
attributable to a number of factors such as
bearing failure, seal failure, suction loss etc.
The measurement of load together with other
process variables like pressure and flow can
provide invaluable information regarding the
operation of the vital spin pumps.

There are other electrical components and systems that use electric power where current measurement will
provide useful and important information regarding status or provide protection.
Solar Panels
Photovoltaic arrays are used primarily in two ways to:
• Charge batteries that are used to power remote loads
where installing a connection to the utility grid would be
cost prohibitive
• Energize installations where the DC power is converted to
60 HZ AC power through a solid state inverter.
NK Technologies’ DC Current Transducers can be
installed so the output of the arrays can be monitored. These
transducers are available in bipolar versions so that current
may be measured during charging or discharging of the
batteries.
Additionally NK Technologies’ Power Monitoring
Sensors can be installed to monitor the voltage, current and
frequency output from the inverter.

materials and components have been specified.

2. Shipping and Risk of Loss
NK Technologies shall package products for normal shipping considerations. Further NK Technologies may arrange and prepay all
transportation charges with the understanding that all costs associated
with the delivery beyond the FOB point will be billed to and assumed
by the purchaser. All risk of loss or damage to the products pass to the
buyer upon delivery to the carrier at the FOB point: the carrier acting
as the buyer’s agent.
3. Terms of Payment
Payment shall be made in full within thirty (30) days from the date of product shipment. NK Technologies reserves the right to require full or partial
payment in advance of shipment or otherwise change payment terms.
4. Title
Title to the products will pass to the buyer upon delivery to the carrier
at the FOB point; provided however, NK Technologies will retain a
purchase money security interest in each product until all of it’s claims
arising out of the furnishing of such products have been satisfied in full.
5. Warranty
NK Technologies warrants that all NK Technologies manufactured
products will be free from defects in material and workmanship for the
period of five (5) years after receipt by the buyer unless otherwise stated
in the product literature. This warranty does not apply to any products
or parts not manufactured by NK Technologies, however NK Technologies does agree to assign and transfer to the buyer, insofar as it is
permitted by contract or by law, the manufacturer’s warranty pertaining
to any such products. In any product fails to conform to the warranty
applicable to such product, NK Technologies’ sole and exclusive liability shall be, at it’s option, to repair, replace or credit the purchaser’s
account with an amount equal to the price paid for such products which
are returned by the purchaser during the acceptable warranty period
with such products’ manufacturing date code intact. The foregoing
warranties are in lieu of all other warranties, express or implied, including without limitation, any warranties of merchantability or fitness for a
particular purpose. All warranties (other than those expressly set forth
above) are hereby disclaimed and excluded by NK Technologies. NK
Technologies neither assumes nor authorizes any person to assume any
other liabilities in connection with the sale or use of any products.
6. Returns
Unless agreed to in advance by NK Technologies, all sales are
considered final and all merchandise shall be considered the property
of the purchaser. At it’s discretion, NK Technologies may allow for the
return of product purchased within the last 180 days in exchange for
a restocking charge of twenty-five (25) percent and/or an offsetting
order for a value amount equal to or exceeding that of the product
returned. Returns of product categorized as “N-R”, non-returnable is
prohibited. Any merchandise, warranty or other type of product return
shall require a Return Material Authorization (RMA) issued by authorized
NK Technologies factory personnel. Unless agreed to in advance by
NK Technologies, all products returned shall be shipped at the expense
of the purchaser.
