This is a guide for a transmission oil cooler selection.
There are both applications without any selection/recommendation (mandatory applications,
only one oil cooler available) and application with strong recommendations.
The recommendations give useful and important information about how to specify a truck
depending on different conditions such as
- application
- environment
- road conditions
- topography

Temperature Limitations
In order to give the driver information and if needed warning about the gearbox status,
below guidelines have been set up as limitations/rules for how to display information in
the instrument cluster.

Regular and recurring yellow lamp should not occur.
Yellow lamp
Lasting >300 min. regularly with temp. >1000 C.
Yellow lamp
Lasting >10 min. regularly with temp. >1200 C.
Red lamp
Lasting > 0.5 min. with temp. >1400 C.
Dramatically increased risk of seizing above this temp.
If warnings are occurring regularly, transmission oil cooling needs to be improved.

Recommendations
NOTE! The recommendations are valid for non mandatory applications (spec. appl. see above).
Driving conditions in table1 below are of vital importance for the correct oil cooler choice.
Evaluate the application concerned and add points for each condition.

Topography
The climate is considered as hot if the daily maximum and minimum shade temperatures vary
between -150C and +400C (+50F and +1040F). Temperate climate varies between -150C / +300C (+50F / +860F).
The climate is considered as very hot if the maximum shade temperature is warmer than specified for hot climate.

The sum from table 1 inserted in table 2 gives the correct oil cooler choice.
Example:

TC-RWO (cooling capacity approx. corresponding to TC-MWOH2) is included in retarder (RET-TH).
Exception: I-shift gearboxes.
Transmission cooler is not possible if COOL-PTO is specified.

Vehicles with both retarder (RET-TH) and non I-shift gearbox must always be handled acc. to
the RTO routine.
When adding points related to the topography, start to check if the truck will operate in flat,
predominantly flat, hilly or very hilly conditions according to the GTA parameter definitions.
These are the main conditions marked with 3. Then check if any of the complementary
conditions marked with 4 are fulfilled. If a complementary condition gives more points compared
to the main condition, the higher level of points shall be added. If a main condition is fulfilled, a
complementary condition can never justify that a lower level of points is added compared to
what the main condition states.

Special applications
In some cases where the gearbox PTO is severely used such as mentioned below, extra care
about oil cooler choice is needed. For such applications please follow separate
recommendations for each application:

Heavy rear PTO usage (transmission PTO) > 75 kW 15 minutes or more,
TC-MWO is required if the sum according to table 2 above still is max. 2.
PTO usage (transmission PTO) 1 hour or more, TC-MWO is required if the sum
according to table 2 above still is max. 2.
