GRETAG's D 186 - A Densitometer with totally new
capabilities
Based on its capabilities, the GRETAG D 186 15 a unique unit which decisively
optimizes quality control in reprographics. It is designed to perform all con-
ventional measurements and features a wide variety of technical enhance-
ments.
The battery powered GRETAG D 186 is compact, lightweight and nugged.
This manual contains comprehensive information for operation of the D 186.
Packing
The O 186 is packed in a special shock-resistant box Keep it for returning
the unit if necessary.
Charger
Before using make sure the voltage indicated on the charger complies with
your respective line voltage. If this is not the case, your GRETAG Service Center
will be able to reset or exchange your A
Charge the D 186 at least 14 hours before first use. When the charger is
connected, measurement can be performed immediately,
To safeguard calibration and reference values, charge the D 186 approx,
24 hours if the rechargeable battery is not to be used for several weeks or if
unit is not used within a 2-month period, This measure also ensures long
operating life. A fully charged battery permits approx. 4,000 measurements.
Switching on the unit
The unit can be switched on in different ways:
- Press the ON button [a].
The display indicates the data which appeared before automatic switch-off
of the unit.
- Press any other key.
The display changes depending en he function of the key pressed.
— By performing a measurement.
The unit switches off automatically If no measurement is made or key is
pressed within 40 seconds. However, all values remain stored.

3.3. Density difference
The "Density difference” mode makes it possible to measure the density de-
viation with respect to the reference density value. The D 186 also indicates
if the density value is outside permissible tolerances.
Reference and tolerance values can be randomly selected for all colors. They
remain stored until overwritten or the rechargeable battery is exchanged

3.4. Dot gain
The "Dat gain” mode permits dol gain measurement in two different halftones.
The Murray-Davies equation is used for calculation and the result is displayed
in percent, The D 186 can be matched to all color control strips with the entry
of two random halftone reference values.

The halftone percentages entered apply to all color channels, They need only
be entered once and remain stored until they are overwritten or the recharge-
able battery is replaced,

Densitometer D 186 has excellent long-term measuring reliability. The unit
should, however, be inspected approx. once a month and recalibrated if
necessary,
Calibration check
The automatic filter selection (Auto) feature is normally used for the calibra-
ton check,

- Measure the density of the color fields on the calibration card.
- Compare measured values with the reference values given on the cali-
bration card,
- Recalibration is unnecessary if there is a difference of only +/- 0.01,

The density of the prool is too high or the measuring lamp is defective,
Er3 Computer overflow (faulty measurement),
Measurement not performed in the correct sequence.
Er4 Drive blocked.
The mechanical drive is blocked or the optics unit cannot be extended.
As soon as this situation is remedied, a measurement should be per-
formed to retum the optics unit ta its home position.
Ег 5 Calibration or reference values missing.
Calibration or reference values are not stored (e.g. when the recharge-
nn battery is completely discharged or alter replacement of the
attery).

- Measure the color fields B,C,M and Y and adjust thes displayed
density values absolute white as per the calibration card by
pressing << + Mode * >> [7] or [8].
