Slip-On Exhaust System
Part #’s 16601 & 16631
S A
Congratulations, you have purchased the finest exhaust system available for your motorcycle. Your
VANCE & HINES exhaust system is designed and crafted for maximum performance, a perfect fit, a
great sound and unbeatable style! Please follow the installation instructions below and if you have any
questions, feel free to call our technical help line (562) 926-5291.
REMOVING THE STOCK EXHAUST SYSTEM
1. Loosen the four nuts that mount the header to the cylinder heads.
2. Loosen the pinch clamp on the inlet end of the muffler.
3. Remove the bolt from the exhaust collector support mount. (Located on the right front motor
mount.) Save the bolt, washers and nut for reuse.
4. Remove the three bolts that mount the muffler. The two bolts at the rear of the muffler should be
removed from the rubber insulated mount, leaving the two stainless steel brackets attached to the
muffler. Save the nuts, bolts and washers for reuse.
5. Remove the stock muffler and set it aside.
6. For X-1 models only: Remove the front chin fairing from the motorcycle and set it aside.
INSTALLING YOUR NEW VANCE & HINES EXHAUST SYSTEM
1. Locate the stainless steel band bracket (inside small box) and remove the two stainless cap screws
from the band.
2. Carefully slide the band bracket over the carbon fiber muffler, while making sure the hourglass
shaped side of the band bracket faces downward.
3. Position the band bracket between the nameplate and the rear of the muffler. The band should
join together on the opposite side of the name plate. Install the two stainless steel cap screws
finger tight, so the bracket can be adjusted later. View the muffler from the rear. The mounting
bracket should be centered on the top of the muffler with the muffler laying flat (refer to figure 1
on page 2). If the bracket is not centered, remove the band bracket from the muffler and reshape
it to fit correctly.
4. Slide the dog bone shaped nut plate under the side bracket that is spotwelded to the band
bracket.
5. Install the muffler mounting bracket by lining up the two holes in the bracket with the holes in the
nut plate. Be sure that the two ears on the bracket are pointing to the rear of the motorcycle and
install the two 5/16" bolts (supplied) into the nut plate finger tight.
6. Slide the stock pinch clamp onto the notched end of the new tail pipe.
7. Slip the tail pipe onto the collector of the stock header while positioning the muffler assembly
under the motorcycle. Be sure that the front bracket that is welded to the tailpipe, is positioned to

the outside of the stock mounting point. Bolt the muffler assembly to the original mounting points
using the stock hardware.
Note: An additional washer has been supplied for use on the backside of the front rubber mount.
On some models, it may be necessary to loosen the voltage regulator to gain access to the
washer.
Tighten the cylinder head nuts and muffler clamp at the slip joint.
Be sure the two 5/16” bolts on the muffler bracket are tight.
Tighten the three bolts that mount the muffler assembly to the motorcycle.
Tighten the two capscrews on the band bracket evenly and leave at least a 1/16" gap where the
bracket comes together. Do not over tighten.
For X-1 models only: It may be necessary to trim the lower left hand side of the chin fairing to
provide clearance between the tailpipe and the fairing. A 1/4” gap is desired to prevent the
fairing from melting. Refer to figure 2 on page 3.
Be sure to tighten all hardware before starting your motorcycle.
RE-JETTING INSTRUCTIONS
Re-jetting the carburetor will result in realizing the "full" potential of this performance exhaust system.
Vance & Hines offers jet kits for most applications. Note: The X-1 models are fuel injected and shouldn’t
require any adjustment to the air/fuel mixture.
PLEASE NOTE:
Every effort is made for Vance & Hines Exhaust Systems to provide improved cornering clearance.
However, due to design and space limitations on some motorcycle models, ground and cornering
clearance may not be improved and in some cases may be reduced. Be sure to follow proper
installation instructions.
NOTE:
The discoloration or blueing of a nickel finish is normal. Without proper care or maintenance, this
finish may rust or corrode. This finish is not warranted against those conditions. For tips on
maintenance, please see our "Care Kit" (Part No. 22661).
