About
This is the Help File for the Battery Capacity Checker from Powakaddy.
Please refer to any og the following:-
i) Installing Software (Page 4) to install the software on you PC

Installing Software
To install the software double click the 'Battery Capacity Checker V1.xx' to begin installation.
Follow on-screen prompts to complete installation.
Please also refer to installing USB driver (Page 4) to complete installation.
Installing USB driver
When the Battery Capacity checker is first connected to the PC the USB driver needs to be installed.
Depending upon your operating system you may need to install the driver from the CD.
To check whether the driver has been installed, open 'Device Manager' on your PC and expand the 'Ports'
option as below:-
If there is 'USB Serial Port' showing with no exclamation mark, then the driver has been installed correctly.
If you do not get the port or there is an exclamation mark then follow the steps below:Manually installing USB driver:4

i) Right click the device and select 'Update Driver' and the following will be displayed:-
ii) Select 'Browse my Computer for driver software' and the following will be displayed:-
iii) Click the browse button and select the installation CD location.
iv) Press next and the driver will then be installed.
Once the driver has been installed you will be able to see the 'COMM Port' number assigned to the
instrument.
Once installed please refer to Starting Software (Page 12) for further reference.

Instrument Operation
The following describes how to use the Battery Discharger:Firstly ensure the power supply is plugged into the unit DC socket and switched on.
Press the ON/OFF button and the unit will initially show the description and software version:-

Then after 1 second the Menu Screen will be displayed.

To Start a battery discharge test from the Main Screen simply press the START button and refer to page
8.
The unit can be turned off by pressing the ON/OFF button.
There are two options available from the Main Screen:i) Display Results (Page 7)
ii) Set Clock (Page 7)
To select an option from the Main Screen use the UP and DOWN buttons to select the required option.

Display Results
Selecting the Display Results option from the Main Menu shows the previously stored results:-

Press Enter will return to the Main Menu (Page 6).
Set Clock
Selecting the Set Clock option from the Main Menu allows the operator to change the clock:-

Use the UP and DOWN buttons to select the correct number for each entry.
Once happy with the number press the Enter button to move along to the next number to enter.
Once everything has been entered, the unit will automatically go back to the Main Menu (Page 6).

Run Test
Pressing the Start button from the Main Menu starts the process of discharging the battery under test.
Ensure the correct discharge lead is connected to the rear of the Discharger unit . Please refer to Test
Criteria (Page 9) for details.
The first thing to select is the battery type to be tested:-

Use the UP and Down buttons to select the battery to be tested and then press Enter

Press the Start button to begin the discharge test, or Enter to change the selection.
Once the Start button is selected, the discharger will then automatically begin the discharge of the selected
battery.
Once complete the unit will terminate the test automatically and display the results:-

Starting Software
When the software is started the serial ports on your computer are scanned to see whether the 'Battery
Discharger' is connected to the computer.
If serial port(s) are found then the following will be displayed:-
Please note that more than one port can be detected depending upon the computer hardware, and also any
other devices which may be connected.
If no serial ports are detected then the following will be displayed:-

Using Software
When the software is first run there will be a blank set of results shown on the screen as below:-
There are four menu options available:i) File Menu (Page 14)
ii) Retrieve Menu (Page 17)
iii) Configuration Menu (Page 19)
iv) Help Menu (Page 21)

File Menu
There are five options available from the 'File Menu' :i) 'New' (Page 14)
ii) 'Open' (Page 14)
iii) 'Save As' (Page 15)
iv) 'Print' (Page 16)
v) 'Exit' (Page 16)
New
The 'New' option clears all previous retrieved results.
Open
The 'Open' option allows you to open previously stored results.
Selecting the 'Open' option will display a screen as below (actual layout will depend upon operating system):-
Once the results have been selected the graph and details will be shown on the graph.

Save As
The 'Save As' option allows downloaded results to be saved to the computer for future reference.
Selecting the 'Save As' option will display a screen as below (actual layout will depend upon operating
system):-
Type the required file name in the box and press the 'Save' button.
The results can be opened (Page 14) again at any time.

Print
The 'Print' option allow printing the results to a printer.
Selecting the 'Print' option will display a screen as below (actual layout will depend upon operating system):-
Select the required printer and press 'Print' and the graph will be printed.
Exit
Selecting the 'Exit' option will close the software.

Retrieve Menu
Retrieve Menu
Firstly ensure the correct serial port (Page 21) is selected. If you try and retrieve data when there is no serial
port selected, you will see the following:-
When the 'Retrieve Data' option is selected or the F2 short cut key, the software communicates with the
Battery Discharger and will show either of the following messages:i) Download Complete
This means that the test results have been downloaded to the software correctly.
The Test Results (Page 22) will then be displayed.
ii) Download Fail

This means that the test results have not been downloaded correctly. This error is usually due to not
selecting the correct Comm Port (Page 21)
No results will be displayed.

Configuration Menu
Configuration Menu
There is a minimum of one option available from the 'Configuration Menu':i) 'Scan' (Page 19)
If the software has detected serial ports on your PC then there will also be a minimum of one additional option
which will the the port number.
If multiple ports are detected then there will be a list of all available options.
Scan
Selecting the Scan option or using the short cut 'ALT+S' will scan the computer for available Serial ports.
Once the scan has completed the software will display how many serial ports have been detected.
If serial port(s) are found then the following will be displayed:-

Please note that more than one port can be detected depending upon the computer hardware, and also any

If no serial ports are detected then the following will be displayed:-
Once the system has detected any serial port, the port is listed within the Configuration menu:-
The relevant Serial Port (Page 21) can then be selected to communicate with the battery discharger.

Comm Ports
Once the software has detected the connection of the Battery Discharger, the relevant serial port can be
selected:-
Port number and quantity are dependent upon the computer hardware and other possible hardware
connections.
Once selected the port will show a 'tick' next to the option.
You are then ready to Retrieve Data (Page 17) from the Battery Discharger.

Help Menu
The Help menu gives the 'About' option which will display software version.

Test Results
Once the test results have been retrieved a the graph will be populated similar to below:-
The Next stage is to Add Customer Details (Page 23)

Add Customer Details
Once the results have been downloaded from the Battery Discharger, the results can be customized.
Click on each of the four boxes in turn and type in the Reference, Dealer, Battery Type, and Capacity.
Once all the information has been entered the results should be Saved (Page 15) for future reference.
The results can also be printed (Page 16) to keep a hard copy.

Tutorial
Here is a step by step guide on how to use the instrument and download the results to the PC:-
i) Connect DC power supply to socket at back on instrument and press ON button to show Main Menu (Page
6).
ii) Connect the battery to be tested using the relevant leads (Page 9).
ii) Press the Start Button and select the battery to be tested (Page 8).
iii) Allow instrument to complete the discharge test, and once complete check the Test Criteria (Page 9) to
determine if the battery meets the required run time.
iv) Connect the Battery Discharger to the computer using the USB lead supplied.
v) Start the PC software (Page 12).
vi) Ensure the Serial port number is selected from within the Configuration Menu (Page 19).
vii) Select Retrieve Data (Page 17) from the Retrieve menu or press the short cut key F2.
viii) Ensure the software reports 'Download Complete'.
ix) Add the Customer/Dealer (Page 23) Details.
x) Save (Page 15) the results for future reference.
xi) Print (Page16) the results (if required) for future reference.
