Overview

IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) has become well
established as the leading technology for providing
frequency, phase and time-of-day synchronisation over
packet based networks. However, deploying PTP-capable
equipment in existing networks can be a highlydisruptive and prohibitively expensive upgrade. CTL6200
SyncBOX-u™ from Chronos addresses this barrier to
adoption by providing a standalone sync solution that is
cost-effective while still meeting all the demands of a
synchronisation product.
SyncBOX-u™ combines industry-proven synchronisation
system-on-a-chip with a managed Ethernet switch to
implement a multi-port sync device. A total of four dataplane ports are provided – two standard SFP slots for use
with a variety of gigabit optical Ethernet interfaces and
two triple-speed copper RJ45 ports. Typically an alloptical or all-copper flow will be used but in applications
requiring more flexibility the copper and optical ports
can be used together to provide additional ports or a
copper-to-optical conversion. The ports can operate in
isolation or can work in a flow-through “bump on the
wire” mode allowing SyncBOX-u™ to be inserted into an
existing data path.

The CTL6200 SyncBOX-u™ requires basic parameters
such as its IP address and operating mode to be
configured prior to operation. This is handled by the
CPU within SyncBOX-u™, which can save basic
configuration parameters. In many cases this allows
SyncBOX-u™ to start-up operation automatically
without additional configuration. To simplify
configuration, DHCP is supported, along with
automatic registration to the Chronos SyncGEM™
management server, which can then perform
additional configuration. The Chronos SyncGEM™
management server can provide a standard SNMP
control mechanism with a MIB defining access to the
SyncBOX-u™ configuration. This control mechanism
will operate through the data-plane or management
ports, with optional encryption for increased security.
