Welcomevolunteerstothewarmingcenter
Thankthemforvolunteering.Letthemknowthattheyarethemostimportantpartofthe
center.Theyaretheoneswhomakethecenterawarmandinvitingplaceforourguests.
Introduceyourselfbyname.Letthemknowyouaretheshiftsupervisorandtheycancometo
youiftheyhaveanyquestionsorconcernswhiletheyarethere.
Forthenext20minutes,wewillgooverthebasicrulesandproceduresofthecenterandsome
guidelinesforvolunteers.Iwillnothavetimetocovereverything,soifyouseesomething
duringyourshiftandhaveaquestion,pleasedonothesitatetoaskme.

Safety(2minutes)
Intheeventthatweneedtoevacuatethepremises,wewillmeetonthesidewalkonBlossom
Hillroad(pointinthedirectionofBlossomHill)
Shouldtherebeanemergencythatrequiresustocall911,itisrecommendedthatweusethe
telephoneintheCAroom(wherewearenow).Youwillneedtodial9-911
AED–thereisanAEDlocatedinsidethemaindooroftheofficebuilding.Thenjusttotheright.
Rulesandprocedures(10minutes)
Wedonotallowdrugs,alcoholorweaponsinthecenter.Ifaguesthasapocketknife,theyare
askedtoturnthatintotheshiftsupervisoruntiltheyarereadytoleavethecenterfortheday.
Ourguestsmaycheckoutofthewarmingcenterwhenevertheywantandtheymaycheckback
intothecenter.However,whentheycheckoutofthecenter,theymustleavethechurch
premises.
Ifsomeonecomestothecenteraskingforaguest,please,donotletthemknowwhoisinour
center.Wepromiseourguestsconfidentiality.Theexceptiontothisruleisthepolice.
TheCAroom(wherewecurrentlyare)isofflimitsexceptasaroutetothebathroomorwhen
usingthephone.Thephoneisavailableforlocalcallsonlyandguestsareontheirhonorto
followthisrule.
Guestsandvolunteersmaygointothekitchentogetsnacksbutshouldnotbehangingoutin
thekitchen.Foodandbeveragesshouldnotbetakentothecotarea.

orchoosenottohelp.Thosewhocanwillgettheworkdone.Please,rememberthatyoudon’t
knowthewholestorybehindwhysomeonemaynotbeabletohelp.
Ifunexpectedguestsshowupatthewarmingcentersign-indesk.Informthemthatthecenteris
forinvitedguestsonlyandtellthemthattheycannotremainoncampus.Wehavearesource

7:00–11:30shift:Wewillbesettingupthewarmingcenterthismorning.Wehavenodeadline
bywhichtogetitdonesowewillworkonitwiththehelpwegetuntilitisdone.Noworries,no
stress.
11:00–3:30shift:Ourprimarytaskthisshiftwillbesettingupandcleaninguplunch.
3:00–7:00shift:Weareresponsibleforbreakdownofthewarmingcenterthisevening.Wewill
getanearlystartonthistasksothatweareoutofherenolaterthan7:00.
Volunteerguidelines(7minutes)
Treatallguestsinacourteousandpolitemanner
Avoidputtingyourselfinasituationwhereyouarealonewithaguestinasecludedarea
Respecttheprivacyofourguests.Introduceyourselfbutdon’tpryorhover
Someguestsareoptimisticandopenabouttheirsituation.Othersfeelashamed,humiliatedand
alienatedfromeveryone.However,guestcoperespecttheirexperience.
Recognizeandbesensitivetothefrustrationandangerguestsmayfeel.How,aguestfeelsor
