LTC4008
DESCRIPTION
Demonstration circuit 496B is high power, high efficiency charger controller featuring the LTC4008.
This is a general-purpose programmable charger that
works with any battery chemistry. The input voltage is
15V to 20V. The maximum charge current is 3A. The
charger output voltage is programmed with a voltage
divider.
The demonstration circuit comes with preset dividers to
work with 3- and 4-Cell Li-Ion batteries. Test points and
LED’s are provided to monitor ICL, ACP, FAULT and
FLAG status lines. An additional test point is used to allow monitoring of the charge current.

CONTROLLING THE BATTERY CHARGER WITH PC, VIA
THE SMBUS
A Smart Battery can be monitored via DC496B’s built-in
SMBus interface. To allow monitoring from a PC, Linear
Technology offers an interface kit in the form of demonstration circuit 410. DC410 includes a PC-serial-toSMBus adapter and associated software to monitor a
Smart Battery from a PC.
DC496B includes a connector that is specifically designed to interface with DC410 (see Figure 1).
Two sets of battery connections are provided. The first
set is for an industry standard 5-pin Smart Battery; the
second is for hardwiring a custom battery pack (see
Figure 1).
NOTE:
An onboard NTC thermistor is provided to demonstrate
the LTC4008 thermistor features. A jumper (JP3) is pro-

QUICK START PROCEDURE
Demonstration circuit 496B is easy to set up to evaluate
the performance of the LTC4008. Refer to Figure 1 for
proper measurement equipment setup and follow the
procedure below:
Connect a wall adapter power source to the wall
adapter terminal J1 or connect a power supply to
DCIN and GND. The power supply must be capable of
handling 4A of current within a 15V to 20V range.

Connect a load to the VOUT and GND terminals.

Plug in a 12.6V or 16.8V Li-Ion battery pack.
5.
Set JP1 to the battery voltage that matches the type of
battery pack you are using.

Turn on the input power supply.
7.
Charging should start immediately, provided the battery is not already fully charged or the load is not
drawing more than 3.57 Amps.

Optional: Attach the DC410 PC-serial-to-SMBus
adapter to the DC496B and to the PC. Start the appropriate software.
