What navigation system should you be using?
RescueNet Navigator is not simply a GPS. It provides your crew with updated incident information as soon as
it is dispatched. Updates and timestamps are electronic, eliminating miscommunication and inaccurate data.
A visual map and accurate turn-by-turn directions allow your crew to focus on getting to the scene quickly and
safely. The table below compares the Navigator Full Client and Navigator Garmin Interface.
Feature
Navigator
Full Client
(Bing Mapping)
Mapping & Routing
Full Navigator mapping and routing is based off of either your purchased map data or Bing maps.
Garmin mapping and routing is provided by Garmin.
Chat Messaging
Both full Navigator and the Garmin can send and receive chat messages to communicate with
dispatch through ZDMC.
Time Stamps
Both full Navigator and the Garmin can send time stamps back to CAD, although Garmin cannot
set statuses of AtPost or EnRoute to Post
Easy Response Mode
In the full Navigator, Easy Response Mode displays a red screen when an incident is assigned to
the vehicle; clicking the screen takes the user to the Response or Dispatch screen.
Supervisor Mode
The full Navigator allows for Supervisor mode so supervisors can see the crews and vehicles
assigned, their incidents, analyze past incidents, and route to units to give assistance.
Notification when Offline
If a client loses cellular connection, the full Navigator displays a notification in the bottom right
hand corner to alert the user they are offline. The Garmin does not display any notification.
Queued Status Updates When Offline
If a client loses cellular connection, the full Navigator will store all time stamps and send them to
CAD when connection resumes. The Garmin will store only the last time stamp and ignore any
previous time stamps made while disconnected
HIPAA Data / Transmitting Patient Information
The full Navigator is able to receive HIPAA and patient data, but the Garmin lacks the high level
security to transmit this information.
Stacking of Trips
If using stacked trips in Garmin, dispatch will have to set them Enroute since it is unknown which
incident the status refers to from the Garmin. If more than one active (past assigned status),
can set status from Garmin ONLY IF all the incidents (past assigned) have the exact same status.
Ability to Add Map Layers and Other Data
Within the full Navigator, admins can add map layers, additional data hydrant layers
and building floor plans, but the Garmin does not have this functionality.
