Quick Start Guide to a Safe Charge*
Make sure that all electrical accessories are turned off. Wait five minutes for vehicle battery to stabilize. If this step is omitted it will be very difficult to get your
vehicle started. Remove the Porta-Jump Tote Bag from storage. Remove all accessories and leave the PJ Battery Box in the tote bag. Caution: the PJ Battery Box may become “warm to the touch” during operation. Do not touch or handle. Roll down the sides of the tote bag exposing the top of the battery box. If it is necessary to move the battery box during operation use the tote bag to lift the battery box.
Next identify the specific ignition system your vehicle operates under. It may be necessary to refer to your Owner’s Manual. There are two classifications: (1) The power port/cigarette lighter receptacle is powered directly by the vehicle’s battery, remains active at all times, even when the ignition key is in the off position or (2) The power port/cigarette lighter receptacle is only powered when the ignition key is in the
Accessory (ACC) position. Some new model vehicles are equipped with Keyless
Ignition systems and or Push Button Starters, generally these systems operate in either
Class 1 or 2 above. Check your Owner’s Manual for the correct classification.
TEST
The TEST is performed by inserting the PJ Adapter Plug into the cigarette lighter/power port receptacle (the adapter jack is not plugged into the PJ Battery Pack at this time) with the Charge/Recharge switch in the forward position. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
The Porta-Jump Emergency Car Battery Booster was designed specifically to assist motorists, like yourself, overcome an emergency situation caused by your vehicle experiencing a discharged battery. Porta-Jump has taken great care to design a product that will assist motorists to safely drive away from the emergency in 15-20 minutes. One can imagine that with over 300 new car models being introduced into the marketplace each and every year that a product that can service a majority of different operating systems is a daunting task. To facilitate the vastness of the market Porta-Jump has narrowed the charging methods to two basic OPTIONS. A majority of vehicles will fall into either one of these categories and if not, Porta-Jump has a “Fail-Safe” option, if the first two options fail.
THE EMERGENCY!
When you return to your car and discover that the vehicle will not start, usually when you insert the key and hear the “clicking sound”. Don’t panic, take a deep breath and collect your thoughts. Immediately begin to take charge and turn off everything that may be discharging your car’s battery. Turn off:
· The headlights.
· The interior lights, including the dashboard panel display dimmer, the overhead lights, map lights, side panel lights and rear overhead lights.
· The radio, CD player, cell phone and any plug in device such as a navigational aide.
· A/C or heater fan.
· If you have a car alarm system, like Lo Jack or a navigational system, like Tom-
Tom, they must be put into the “Valet Mode” or they will interrupt power flow to or from the electrical system and the Porta-Jump may not work.
Once you have turned off all possible electrical devices that are interrupting current flow, to or from, your vehicle’s battery allow 5 minutes for your vehicle’s battery to stabilize. Failure to pause for this critical recovery period may result in not being
able to start your vehicle. Most fully operational batteries will begin to recover if they have been successfully operating in the immediate past (not stored for more than 2 weeks) and will automatically recover from a total discharged state so that the battery boost provided by the Porta-Jump will be successful.
THE TEST
The TEST is performed by inserting the PJ Adapter Plug into the cigarette lighter/power port receptacle (the adapter jack is not plugged into the PJ Battery Pack at this time) with the Charge/Recharge switch in the forward position. The test will indicate your charging options as follows:
(1) Class 1 Ignition System (with key in off position) Green light ON indicates vehicle battery will accept charge and NO Light indicates that the vehicle battery will not accept charge and you should seek professional help.
(2) Class 2 Ignition System (key in ACC position) Green light ON indicates vehicle will accept charge and NO Light indicates that the vehicle battery will not accept charge and you should seek professional help. Go to Charging Option.
CHARGING OPTION #1
For Class 1 Ignition Systems (key in off position) insert the PJ Adapter Cord Jack End into PJ Battery Pack Jack Receptacle to begin the charge. The charging cycle takes from
12-15 minutes. An audible sound will indicate that the charge is complete. The green
LED light will progressively glow brighter.
CHARGING OPTION #2
For Class 2 Ignition Systems (key in ACC position) insert the PJ Adapter Cord Jack End into the PJ Battery Pack Jack Receptacle to begin the charge. The charging cycle takes from 12-15 minutes. An audible sound will indicate that the charge is complete. The green LED light will progressively glow brighter.
DRIVE
The audible sound will indicate the end of the charging period, between 12-15 minutes. Leaving the PJ Adapter plugged into the PJ Battery Box and inserted into the cigarette lighter/power port receptacle start your car. Do not pump gas pedal.
CHARGING OPTION #3
FAIL SAFE OPTION If Charging Options #1 and #2 fail to charge your car’s battery to the starting point utilize the “Fail Safe Option”. Before exiting the vehicle turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and remove the key. You will need to take the
Porta-Jump Battery Box (still in the rolled down Tote Bag) by the pull strings to avoid touching the battery box, the PJ Adapter Plug and the Porta-Jump Mini Jumper Cables
(Alligator Clips with red and black tips) with you as you exit the vehicle. Lift the hood and locate the vehicle’s battery.
Attach the RED clip to the battery’s RED (+)terminal and the Black clip to the battery’s
Black (-) Terminal. If a Black Terminal is not evident then attach the Black Clip to a metal surface of the vehicle’s frame to ground the circuit.
Plug the Porta-Jump Adapter Plug into the Mini Jumper Cable’s receptacle and check to make sure the PJ Adapter Plug’s Charge/Recharge Switch is set to the forward position.
If the Green LED glows (even faintly) then proceed with the charge. If the Green LED
fails to glow then your vehicle’s battery is defective and you should call for professional help.
To proceed with the charge, leave the mini jumper cables attached to the battery, keep the PJ Adapter Cord plugged into the mini jumper cables and now plug the PJ Adapter
Cord’s Jack End into the PJ Battery Box to start the charge. At the completion of the charge cycle (12 to 15 minutes) an audible “beep” will indicate that you may start your vehicle. It is now time to start your vehicle. It is necessary to leave everything attached to your vehicle’s battery and return to the Driver’s Station, insert the key and start your vehicle. Once the vehicle is running you may return to the battery and disconnect the Mini Jumper Cables. To recharge the PJ Battery Box follow the instructions listed below.
Be advised - that some automobile manufacturers have placed the battery in other locations within the vehicle to accommodate design requirements. Your battery may be under the rear seat or in a special compartment under the frame toward the rear.
If your battery is not accessible, the manufacturer has placed a “CHARGING POINT” somewhere under the hood. Please refer to your Owner’s Manual to locate the
“charging point” (usually a “nut”). Instead of attaching the alligator clips to the battery attach them to the “charging point”, as instructed, and continue the charge as described above.
RECHARGING THE PORTA-JUMP BATTERY BOX
To recharge the PJ Battery Pack reverse the charge/recharge switch on the adapter plug
(leaving the PJ Adapter cord/battery box plugged into the cigarette lighter/ power port receptacle) and after 30 minutes drive time your unit will be fully charged. If the Fail
Safe Option was used to recharge the battery simply return the PJ Battery Box and
Adapter Cord to your inside console and plug the Adaptor Cord into your vehicle’s power port and set the charge/recharge switch to “recharge”. After 30 minutes drive time your unit will be fully charged.
PORTA-JUMP ACCESSORY KIT
The Porta-Jump Accessory Kit expands the recharging options to include motorcycles, motor scooters, ATV, RV, boats, snowmobiles and airplanes that operate on a standard 12 volt electrical system. The accessories are designed to accommodate the operating features of these vehicles, which might be different from the standard automobile recharging protocols. Please refer to each vehicles Owner’s Manual and follow those specific recharging protocols for a successful battery boost.
The Mini Jumper Cables (commonly referred to as “alligator clips”) are designed to attach directly to the discharged vehicle’s battery. Follow the user instructions in the
Fail Safe Mode above.

RECOMMENDED BATTERY MAINTENANCE
The best way to avoid an emergency situation where your vehicles’ battery becomes discharged is to properly maintain the battery. It is recommended that each time you have your vehicle serviced have the mechanic check your vehicle’s battery, including, the fluid levels (if applicable), the terminal connections should be free of corrosive build-up and fastened to the battery terminals, the battery cables should be inspected.
The mechanic should check your vehicle’s “fuse box” for defective fuses and replace them as needed. Specific attention should be made that the cigarette lighter receptacle and the power port fuses are operational since they determine if your potential recharge will be effective.
The mechanic should verify the battery manufacturer’s warranty expiration date. If the battery is out of warranty it should be replaced. The closer your battery gets to the expiration date the weaker it becomes. The Porta-Jump System should not be used as a battery extender or replacement.
Your vehicle’s battery is the most important component in the vehicles operation. It should be inspected regularly and replaced when indicated.
